Chapter 37 Resonance
Chapter 37 Resonance
The shared vision shattered everything.
Seraphine dropped to one knee on the blood-soaked road, her staff clattering against the ground. The image of the woman in white collapsing into blood-covered arms burned behind her eyes like fire. The wedding ring slipping away. The desperate whisper. The overwhelming love and loss that wasn’t entirely hers. Her holy magic surged wildly out of control, golden light fracturing into violent streaks of silver that lashed across the battlefield.
“I… I don’t understand,” she gasped, clutching her chest as if her heart were being torn apart. Tears streamed freely down her cheeks. “Why does this hurt so much? Why do I feel like I’m losing everything?”
Across from her, Darius staggered backward as though struck by an invisible hammer. His clawed hand pressed hard against the hollow cavity where his heart had once beaten. Dark necrotic energy leaked from his glowing sockets like black tears. For the first time since crawling out of his grave, raw human grief tore through him, sharp, overwhelming, and completely unfiltered by the cold detachment of undeath.
“Elyra…” he whispered again, his voice cracking with agony he had no defense against. “I remember… I remember losing you.”
The undead legion behind him fell into chaos. Thralls dropped their weapons. Some collapsed to their knees. Others let out low, mournful groans as their master’s unstable emotions flooded violently through their bonds. Rhen rushed forward and grabbed Darius’s arm.
“Commander! Snap out of it! Whatever this is, fight it!”
Vael stood ready with his massive axe raised, but even the silent giant looked uncertain as he watched his king unravel before his eyes.
Seraphine tried to stand, but her legs refused to obey. Her holy magic continued spiraling out of control, golden and silver light clashing violently around her body. The resonance between them pulsed like a living heartbeat, ancient, painful, and undeniable. She could feel him. Not just his power, but his grief. His love. His confusion. It mirrored her own so perfectly that it terrified her to her core.
“What are you?” she whispered, staring at the Hollow King. “Why do I feel like I’ve known you my entire life?”
Darius lifted his head and looked directly at her again. The pain in his glowing green sockets was unmistakable, raw and devastating. “I don’t know. But seeing you… it breaks everything I’ve become. I should hate your Light. I should want to tear it apart. Instead… I want to protect it. I want to protect you.”
The Order knights watched in growing horror. One of the captains pointed his sword at Seraphine. “She hesitates! The creature is corrupting her! Look at her Light… it’s tainted with darkness!”
Brother Aldric stepped forward, his voice sharp with urgency. “High Priestess! Regain control! This is the enemy’s trickery! He seeks to turn you against us with false memories and emotions!”
But Seraphine couldn’t tear her eyes away from Darius. The connection between them felt like a thread pulled taut across life and death itself. Every second it grew stronger. She could sense his memories flickering at the edge of her mind, a battlefield, betrayal, a woman’s scream. Her scream.
“I’m not corrupted,” she said, though her voice trembled badly. “I… I don’t know what I am anymore.”
The templars grew more restless. Several raised their weapons, holy light gathering around their blades. One fanatic knight, eyes wild with religious zeal, suddenly broke formation and charged toward Seraphine from behind.
“Traitor!” he screamed at the top of his lungs. “You’ve been tainted by the undead! For the glory of the Radiant Veil!”
Seraphine turned too late. The knight’s sword came down toward her exposed back.
Darius moved faster than anyone expected. In a blur of black mist and hardened bone, he crossed the distance between them. His clawed hand caught the knight’s sword mid-swing, snapping the blessed blade in half. The fanatic knight stared in pure terror as Darius lifted him off the ground by the throat with terrifying ease.
“You will not touch her,” Darius growled, his voice layered with lethal promise and something far more dangerous, possession.
He crushed the knight’s neck with a sickening crack and tossed the body aside like it weighed nothing.
The battlefield erupted into complete chaos.
Templars charged forward with battle cries. Undead thralls surged to protect their king. Steel clashed against bone. Holy light burned against necrotic mist. Rhen and Vael moved instantly to Darius’s side, cutting down any knight who got too close. But Darius remained completely focused on Seraphine, standing between her and the oncoming soldiers like a living shield of death and bone.
Seraphine stared up at him, her staff forgotten at her feet. The silver light around her hands had stabilized, pulsing in perfect rhythm with the green glow in Darius’s sockets. The resonance between them was undeniable now.
Neither of them understood what was happening.
But both of them felt it.
The connection.
The impossible truth that bound them across life and death.
Brother Aldric shouted desperate orders, but his voice seemed distant and meaningless. The battle raged violently around them, yet in the center of the storm, Darius and Seraphine stood facing each other, two souls that should never have met again, now unable to look away.
Darius took one more slow, deliberate step toward her. His claws trembled at his sides. Black mist swirled chaotically around his body.
“Elyra…” he whispered once more, the name filled with centuries of grief and desperate, aching hope.
Seraphine’s lips parted, but no words came. Only silent tears.
The war between Light and Dark had just become far more complicated than anyone could have imagined.
