Chapter 236
Chapter 236
Stella's POV
The howls of approaching wolves rise above the crackle of dying fires, a chorus of relief and vengeance. I clutch the cub closer, his tiny fist still tangled in my tunic as Kai steps in front of us, sword raised to fend off any straggling Silver Rot soldiers. But the nanite-infused warriors are already collapsing, their systems failing without Damon to command them—some convulse on the ice, others melt into puddles of silver sludge, mirroring their creator's fate.
As the tension eases, my legs give way beneath me. The adrenaline that carried me through the battle drains away, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and searing pain from my wounds. Kai catches me before I hit the ground, his strong arms wrapping around my waist.
"Easy, star," he murmurs, his voice thick with worry. "You did it. We're safe now."
He calls out for help, and within moments, a team of healers rushes to our side. It was precisely the doctors who had delivered me before—they were scattered, yet not far from us.
"The bullet wounds are deep, but they missed anything vital," she says, applying a poultice of crushed edelweiss and herbs to my shoulder. "Rest and these remedies will see you through."
Kai is also tended to, his gashes cleaned and bandaged. Ataq stands nearby, watching over his son with a mixture of pride and concern. "You fought well, boy," he grunts, though his eyes shine with unspoken affection.
Once we're stable, Kaya stumbles forward, supported by two Glacier warriors. Her shoulder is wrapped in a bloody bandage, but her eyes shine with defiance. "Damon tried to ascend," she gasps, nodding to the silver puddle. "The cub... his power overloaded the ritual."
All eyes turn to me, then to the bundle in my arms. The cub chooses that moment to squirm, letting out a loud coo as green storm ribbons unfurl from his tiny fingers, dancing in the moonlight like living things. They weave patterns in the air—crescents and spirals, ancient symbols that make Ataq, who's just arrived with a contingent of Glacier warriors, mutter a prayer under his breath.
"A boy," Morsha breathes, her sharp features softening. "A true storm child."
Erik lets out a whoop that echoes across the lake, clapping Kai on the back so hard my mate staggers. "A prince! The federation's first heir!" He drops to one knee in the snow, bowing his head. "Hail the cub of storm and ice!"
The other warriors follow suit, their armor clattering against the frozen ground. Even the Rimefang and Bloodmire wolves, who once eyed each other with suspicion, lower their heads in unison. The cub's storm ribbons glow brighter, as if feeding on their reverence, and he waves his hands, sending a flurry of snowflakes spinning above our heads.
Kai meets my gaze, his blue eyes bright with awe. He reaches out, tracing a finger along the cub's chubby cheek, and the storm ribbons curl around his wrist, pulsing with energy. "He's perfect," he murmurs, his voice thick with emotion.
I nod, tears stinging my eyes. The past hours feel like a blur—labor pains, Damon's madness, the ritual's horror—but now, surrounded by our people, holding our son, it all fades into a distant nightmare. The cub lets out a contented sigh, nestling into my chest, and I feel a surge of protectiveness so fierce it takes my breath away.
"Listen to me," I say, raising my voice. The warriors look up, their faces expectant. "Damon's fall shows us the danger of division. He preyed on our weaknesses, our old grudges. We must never let that happen again. And as we celebrate this new life, we also mourn those we've lost." My throat tightens as I think of Marla, who sacrificed herself to buy us time during the battle, and Leif, the young beta who died defending us.
"Marla, Leif, and all the others who gave their lives—they fought not just for themselves, but for our future. Their names will be carved into the ice, remembered in our songs, and honored in every victory we achieve."
Ataq rises, his one eye fixed on the cub. "Stella speaks true. The federation must be stronger than any clan, any ambition. Our loyalty belongs to the future—this cub's future."
Morsha nods, adjusting her quiver. "Bloodmire stands with the Federation. With the storm prince."
Erik thumps his chest. "Rimefang too! Let's build a world where no one can ever threaten our young again."
The warriors roar their agreement, their voices shaking the ice. I feel Kai's arm around my waist, steadying me as we face our people. The cub opens his eyes, looking up at the moon, and his storm ribbons flare into a brilliant halo.
"Today, we mourn our losses," I say, thinking of Leif and the others who fell defending us. "But we also celebrate. This cub—" I pause, realizing we haven't named him yet.
Kai smiles, understanding. He takes the cub from my arms, holding him high above his head. The moonlight bathes them both, turning Kai's battle scars to silver and highlighting the cub's tuft of black hair.
"This is our son," he declares, his voice carrying across the lake. "He is the storm that weathered the night, the ice that stands unbroken. Let us call him..."
He looks at me, and I nod, knowing the perfect name.
"Let us call him Njal," Kai says, "for the wolf who led his pack through the great blizzard."
The name hangs in the air, and then the warriors erupt into cheers.
"Njal! Hail Prince Njal!"
Kai lowers Njal into my arms, and I press a kiss to his forehead. The storm ribbons wrap around both of us, warm and vibrant. In the distance, the first rays of dawn peek over the mountains, casting the ice in a golden glow.
We did it, I think, looking at Kai, at Kaya, at Erik and Morsha. We survived. And now, with Njal in our arms, we have a reason to hope—a reason to build a better world, united under the moon and the storm.
Kai takes my hand, and together, we raise Njal once more. His storm ribbons dance in the morning light, a promise of strength and unity. The wolves howl again, their song a vow to protect this new life, this symbol of all we've fought for.
As I hold my son close, feeling the warmth of his body and the power of his storm magic, I know that the road ahead will be long and difficult. But with Kai by my side, our people united, and Njal's light guiding us, I have faith that we can face anything together.
