Chapter 25 - Shadows of Control

Lucian POV

The echoes of chaos swirled around me like a storm. Shouts reverberated off the concrete walls, blending with the grunts of men engaged in brutal combat. My eyes were locked on Seraphina, who knelt beside Edward’s lifeless body, her hands trembling as she cupped his bloodied face.

"Edward, stay with me!" she cried, her voice raw with desperation.

The room was a battlefield, but her anguish was louder than the cacophony of violence. Every cry tore through me, reigniting a fury I thought I had mastered.

"Touching," Isolde drawled from behind me, her voice sharp as glass. "But no amount of begging will bring him back, Seraphina. You’re too late. You’re always too late."

I turned, my gun raised, the weight of it steady in my grip. "Shut up," I growled, the words dripping with venom. "This ends now, Isolde."

She laughed—a cold, hollow sound. "Oh, Lucian. You always think you’re in control, don’t you? But this… this is my moment."

I stepped toward her, my movements calculated and deliberate, ignoring the pain in my side from the earlier skirmish. She didn’t flinch, her confidence maddeningly intact.

"Where are the rest of your men?" I demanded, the barrel of my gun trained on her. "Call them off, or I’ll end this here."

Her eyes gleamed with malice as she tilted her head. "And risk losing Seraphina’s fragile trust? We both know you won’t pull that trigger—not in front of her."

A flicker of doubt flashed in my mind, but I buried it. I couldn’t afford hesitation. Not now.

\---

Movement to my left drew my attention. Two of Isolde’s remaining men were advancing on Seraphina and Edward. One held a crowbar, his intent clear in the cruel set of his jaw.

"Seraphina!" I shouted, already moving.

She looked up, her wide eyes filled with fear and something more—something like trust. She didn’t hesitate, dragging Edward’s limp body toward the door, though her frail frame struggled under his weight.

The first man lunged for her, but I intercepted him, slamming my shoulder into his chest and sending him sprawling. The second swung the crowbar, the metal whistling through the air. I ducked, my fist connecting with his ribs in a satisfying crack.

"Keep moving!" I barked at Seraphina, sparing her a glance.

"But—"

"Now!" My voice was harsher than I intended, but it drove her into action. She gritted her teeth, her determination a beacon amidst the chaos.

Isolde watched from a distance, her smirk unwavering. "Such a protector," she mused. "But you can’t save them both, Lucian."

Her words were a taunt, a distraction I refused to acknowledge. My focus remained on Seraphina as she edged closer to the exit, dragging Edward with her.

\---

As the last of Isolde’s men fell, panting and clutching his wounds, I turned my attention back to her. She stood in the center of the room, her arms crossed, as if she were daring me to make the next move.

"Give me one reason not to end this now," I growled, leveling my gun at her.

She didn’t flinch. Instead, she smiled, her eyes glinting with something I couldn’t quite place. "Because, Lucian, you’re not as cold as you like to pretend. You wouldn’t kill me in front of her."

My finger twitched on the trigger. She wasn’t wrong. Seraphina’s faith in me was fragile at best. Killing Isolde here, now, would shatter what little trust she had left.

"You’ve lost, Isolde," I said instead, lowering the gun. "Whatever game you were playing, it’s over."

Her smile widened, and for the first time, I felt a flicker of unease. "Oh, Lucian," she said, her tone almost pitying. "This was never the game. This was the opening move."

\---

Before I could respond, the ground beneath us shuddered. A deafening explosion erupted from the far side of the room, sending debris raining down around us.

"Lucian!" Seraphina’s scream cut through the chaos.

I turned, my heart pounding, to see her shielding Edward with her body as chunks of concrete crashed to the floor. Smoke and dust filled the air, choking and blinding, but I pushed forward, my focus singular.

"Seraphina, get out of here!" I shouted, my voice barely audible above the roar of destruction.

"I can’t leave him!" she cried, her voice breaking.

I reached her in time to pull both her and Edward out of the path of falling rubble. Her hands clung to me, her body trembling with fear and adrenaline.

Isolde’s laughter echoed through the chaos, haunting and triumphant. "You’ll never escape, Lucian. This is where it ends—for all of you."

I met her gaze through the haze, my teeth bared in a snarl. "You’re wrong."

\---

Time was running out. The building groaned under the strain of the explosion, cracks spidering up the walls. I grabbed Seraphina’s arm, pulling her to her feet.

"Go," I urged, my voice firm.

She hesitated, her eyes flickering between me and Edward. "I can’t leave him."

"I’ll carry him," I promised, bending to lift Edward’s broken body onto my shoulder. He was heavier than I anticipated, but adrenaline drove me forward.

The three of us stumbled through the wreckage, each step a battle against the collapsing structure. Smoke burned my lungs, and every breath felt like fire, but I refused to stop.

Isolde’s voice followed us, taunting and cruel. "Run while you can, Lucian. But this isn’t over. It will never be over."

\---

We burst through the exit just as the building gave its final, shuddering collapse. The night air was cold and sharp, a stark contrast to the suffocating heat of the inferno behind us.

Seraphina fell to her knees, gasping for breath, her hands clutching at Edward’s unconscious form. I knelt beside her, my own chest heaving, but my focus remained on her.

"We made it," I said, though the words felt hollow.

She looked up at me, her face streaked with soot and tears. "W

hat now?"

Now, I thought, we rebuild. But even as I held her gaze, I knew this was only the beginning.
