Chapter One Hundred Thirty
Chapter One Hundred Thirty
Avery stepped forward. Not quickly. Not dramatically. Just with the kind of calm, ancient certainty that made the very ground shift beneath her feet. The extremists - all one hundred of them - stumbled around the open valley. Some continued to fight the pull, some still clawed at the air, some still tried to summon magic that no longer answered. Avery’s aura had washed through the forest like a tidal wave, stripping them clean before they even realized what was happening. The earth beneath Avery’s feet glowed faintly, runes awakening in the soil. Avery inhaled once, then she walked.
Kareth Emberborn tried to stand tall as Avery approached, but his knees buckled. Avery stopped before him and his faction - twenty fire-aligned extremists who once believed themselves unstoppable. Her voice was calm, “You sought destruction. You sought fire. You sought to burn what was never yours to claim.” Kareth swallowed hard, Avery continued, “I have bound your flames. They will never return.” The Ashen Circle bowed their heads - not in fear, but in recognition.
The shifters trembled as Avery approached. Garrik Hollowclaw tried to shift - his body spasming with the effort - but nothing happened. Avery’s gaze softened, “You were meant to protect the realm. Not tear it apart.” Garrik’s breath shook, “Your animal souls are bound. They will remain so until you choose peace.” The Hollow Fang bowed.
The Shadowbound extremist - Brann, Lysa, Vorn, and their faction - stared at Avery with wide, hollow eyes. Lysa whispered, voice trembling, “My magic is gone…” Avery stepped closer, “You used the shadows to harm. To manipulate. To destroy.” Brann’s jaw clenched. Vorn snarled - but no flame followed. Avery’s aura pulsed, “The shadows will not answer you again.” The Shadowbound bowed.
The mixed race extremists - oathbreakers, rebels, radicals - stood in a tight cluster, fear and awe warring in their eyes. Avery faced them last, “You broke your oaths. You betrayed your people. You endangered the realm,” Silence fell. Avery lifted her chin, “You will rebuild what you tried to destroy.” The Broken Oath bowed.
By the time Avery finished speaking to each faction, the valley had gone silent. Every extremist - all one hundred - stood bowed before her. Not in fear. In recognition. In acceptance. Avery exhaled softly, her aura dimmed to a gentle glow. The guards moved immediately, forming tight lines around the extremists. Vans rolled forward from the far side of the valley - reinforced, warded, prepared.
One by one, the extremists were loaded inside. Some walked willing. Some stumbled. None resisted. Their magic was gone.Their power stripped. Their souls bound. They would be taken to the Council’s holding cells to await judgement - and rehabilitation. Avery watched them go, her expression unreadable. She didn’t move until the last van door closed. Only then did she turn toward the treeline again. Because she wasn’t finished. Not yet.
There were still the hidden followers - the ones she had allowed to trail the convoy, the ones she had sensed long before they stepped into the valley. Her mates waited inside the hall, trusting her completely. Avery stepped forward, aura rising once more, “Come out.”
The shadows trembled. And the last of the extremists stepped into the light.
Avery watched the Shade creatures stumble from the treeline. They were barely coherent shapes at first - twisted silhouettes, half-formed limbs, flickers of corrupted magic. Some dragged themselves forward. Some clawed at the air. Some tried to retreat back to the darkness of the forest, but Avery’s aura held them fast. They were powerless,
Their magic had been stripped the moment Avery let her aura wash through the realm. Their animal souls were bound, their shadow-forms were unraveling. They didn’t even realize it until they stepped into the valley’s full light.
Avery walked toward them. Slowly. Calmly. With the certainty of someone who had already seen this moment in a vision. The earth beneath her feet glowed faintly, runes embedded into the ground responding to her presence. Fairy magic shimmered around her like drifting starlight. Titania’s voice whispered through her mind, “Heir of the realm. You have done what only YOU could do.” Avery inhaled once, steadying herself.
Then she stepped into the crowd of Shade creatures. She didn’t attack. She didn’t cast a spell. She didn’t raise her voice. She simply reached out. A gentle touch to a twisted shoulder. A brush of her fingers against a warped cheek. A soft press of her palm to a corrupted chest. And with each touch– The Shade form shattered. Not violently Not painfully.
It simply fell away, dissolving like smoke in sunlight. Underneath, their original forms emerged. Some collapsed unconscious, their bodies limp with shock. Some fell to their knees, silent cries wracking their chests. Some stared at their hands, trembling, realizing they were whole again. Some wept openly, the corruption gone, the weight lifted.
Avery moved through them like a tide. Touch Unravel, Restore, Repeat. Her aura guided her hands. The earth lent her strength. The fairies amplified her reach. By the time she reached the last Shade creature, the valley was filled with the sound of quiet sobbing, relieved gasps, and the soft murmurs of the Council guards moving in to help.
Connal appeared from the line of guards like a shadow stepping into sunlight. He didn’t speak, he didn’t need to. He simply began directing the cleanup with sharp, efficient gestures. Guards lifted the unconscious people. Others escorted the shaken ones toward waiting vans. Fairy healers flitted between them, soothing panic and stabilizing their forms. Wards were reinforced around each transport vehicles. Connal’s voice cut through the murmurs, “Secure them. All of them.” The guards obeyed instantly.
Avery didn’t look back. She didn’t need to. She felt the shift - the valley settling, the danger fading, the magic stabilizing. She had done what she needed to do. She turned away from the last restored extremist and began walking toward the summit hall. Her steps steady. Her aura dimmed to a soft glow. Her breathing slowed.
Behind her, the extremists were loaded into vans - gently, carefully, respectfully - to be taken to the Council’s secure medical facility to await rehabilitation, and verdicts. Ahead of her, the summit hall waited. Inside, her mates sat in their seats, watching through the mindlink with awe and fierce pride. Inside, Londrell and Varyn waited, shaken by what they had witnessed. Inside, the envoy waited, unaware of how close they had come to disaster.
Avery reached the hall doors. She paused. Inhaled. Exhaled. And stepped inside.
