The Shattered Veil

The darkness around Leah tightened like a vice around her chest, causing her eyesight to become blurry. Her heart pounded against her ribs as she breathed in short spurts. It felt strange—unnatural—now, yet the grip of the rift was oppressive, the power swirling inside her, blending with her own.

The insulting, unrelenting voice of her father reverberated in her head. You can't beat me. My blood belongs to you. You'll always come back to me.

She fought against the rift's unrelenting pull as its force wrapped about her and pulled her to the ground. The sheer energy it supplied was palpable to her, yet she could no longer control it. He owned it.

However, she had an option. There had always been an option for her.

"No," she said in a tight but defiant whisper. Even though she could hear the rift laughing darkly in her ears, she refused to let it shatter her. Never again.

She tapped into her inner strength and reached inside. This went beyond her father's lineage. It was her determination, her energy, and her will. She'd resisted him for too long to allow him to have her now.

You'll never be at liberty.

Leah, however, was already on the move.

She focused all of her strength into a single blow, reaching for the energy inside herself with a final burst of effort. Around her, the power flared brightly as it clashed with the darkness, causing the air to shimmer.

She was about to escape when a dazzling burst of light engulfed her. Then nothing.

Eliot's hold on the world was slipping. Though he couldn't reach Leah just yet, he could feel the vestiges of the rift tugging at him, threatening to take him into oblivion.

He struggled to hold his head above the emptiness, his muscles burning and his body hurting. He could hear her calling his name, but she was too tightly bound by the rift. Desperate to find a method to rescue her, he extended his hand.

"Leah!" He yelled, but the whirling blackness around him muffled his words. "Where are you?"

Tension was high in the air, and the rift's pull was getting stronger as it attempted to distract him. Even though every second seemed endless, he was unable to let go. Not with her this near.

Then—he sensed it. A flare of warmth against the cold, a presence.

It was something else, not Leah. Something darker, older.

Eliot turned to look at the shadow rising up out of the abyss. It was a tall, threatening, and eerily familiar figure.

"You again?" Eliot said in a low, dreadful tone.

When Leah's vision cleared, he was the first thing she noticed. The fissure had vanished, leaving behind an abyss that seemed to go on forever. Her father smirked as he stood in front of her, as though he had been expecting her the entire time.

His voice was soft, like the buzz of a serpent's song, as he said, "Welcome back, daughter." It was unavoidable. My destiny was inextricably linked to yours.

Her chest thumped with her heartbeat. How? How had she returned to this misery, to this place? He had attempted to bind her in chains, but she had struggled so hard to get out of it.

"No." Her hands shaking, she shook her head. "I've finished this. I'm done with you.

Her father did not, however, relocate. He watched her, almost amused, as he stood there.

"Leah, you're not powerful enough. You weren't. And now you've returned to me," he said, taking a step closer, his eyes growing icier.

A wave of strength and anger erupted within her as the words struck her like a hammer. She wasn't his. No more.

Leah's palms curled into fists as her breathing steadied. A spark of light appeared in the darkness as the energy within her started to swell.

However, a chilly wind swept through the room as her power rose. Darkness enveloped them both as a shadow extended from behind her father. Leah felt the tremendous weight of its existence even though she couldn't see what it was.

Eliot sensed the weight of the impending decision and the pull of the shadow. As the figure in front of him became more distinct, his heart began to accelerate. He sensed it in his bones and understood it. He was not unfamiliar with the man before him. He was the one.

The shadow's voice was too familiar to ignore as he replied, "I didn't expect to see you again, Eliot."

Eliot stepped back, gasping, "No." "What is this?"

The shadow grinned. "The truth, naturally."

As Eliot absorbed the beast in front of him—a darker version of himself—his thoughts raced. As he attempted to concentrate and comprehend what this meant, his hands trembled. However, it was not feasible. Was this a bad dream? Or even more?

Eliot muttered, "No." "This is untrue."

The apparition, however, shook its head. "Only truths, no lies." Now closer, the shadow moved forward, its presence overwhelming. "Eliot, you've always known the truth. You simply choose not to confront it.

As the shadow's hand touched Eliot's shoulder, his heart began to accelerate. "You've been me all along. You will now transform into me.

As her father stood in front of her, teasing her and reminding her of the burden she bore—the legacy she couldn't break free from, the power he had attempted to wield—Leah's mind raced. But she had changed in some way. She sensed it—him. The energy she had previously used was now hers, not only a tool for him.

Her father went on to say, "You cannot fight what you are." “Without me, you are nothing.”

"No," Leah said, her hands trembling. "I am entirely myself without you."

Something inside of her—a force of will, of self—broke free in that instant. A wave of light broke the blackness surrounding her, and she felt the strength she had fought to control surge forward.

For a split second, her father's expression wavered before he composed himself. With a sudden hint of doubt in his voice, he questioned, "You think you can control this?"

With her body exuding vitality and her mind more focused than ever, Leah took a stride ahead. "I am this," she declared in a firm voice that was full of unflinching conviction.

The fissure was now more than just an adversary; it was a mirror of her own strength and a part of who she was.

However, something changed in the air as she moved forward one more step. A shadow extended across the ground as a stranger emerged behind her father.

Leah's eyes widened in surprise as she turned. In front of her stood a distorted version of herself, a sinister representation of the person she had struggled to become.
