Echoes of the Forgotten
As the last traces of the fissure started to disappear, Leah's hands shook. The air was different now, imbued with a peculiar sense of finality, although the ground beneath her was still trembling. She was plagued by the idea that something significant was eluding her, something she had not yet confronted.
The devastation she had left behind hung in the air like smoke, even though her mother was no longer there—just a fading ghost. With his strength acting as a salve for her raw feelings, Eliot's presence grounded her, even as his chest continued to rise and fall with feeble breaths.
"I did it, Eliot," she muttered, her voice cracking. I halted it.
However, Leah sensed the subtle stirring of something sinister that was still hiding in the shadows even as she spoke the words. What had previously been a dazzlingly bright sky has become an eerie violet. And something changed—something sinister that reverberated in her bones.
"Is not it over yet?" With his eyes penetrating the dust and gazing into the distance, Eliot asked softly.
The reality weighed heavy on Leah's chest as she shook her head. "No. It is only the beginning.
Leah's heartbeat quickened as a deep growl reverberated through the surrounding trees. It was not just her who sensed the disruption. The balance of power had swung dangerously with the change in the air.
They were not by themselves.
A person, a shadow black than the night itself, appeared out of the mist before Leah could respond. It was too twisted, too familiar. Her blood raced cold when it spoke.
"Leah... You did not believe you would be able to get away from me forever, did you?
The shape solidifying into something Leah knew all too well, the person moved closer. Tall and chillingly regal, he had eyes that glowed with a terrible intensity. His head was crowned with a dark crown, and his sheer presence appeared to draw the air away from him like a vacuum.
"Is that you?" Leah's voice faltered, a mixture of fear and incredulity. He had been a nightmare the last time she had seen him, a ghost, a recollection from the darkest recesses of her history.
The figure purred, "Yes, my dear," his voice silky smooth but tinged with poison. "You believe that my power came from the rift, but that was only the beginning. You have only let loose what was only waiting to emerge.
Leah staggered back, her eyes enlarging as the reality hit her like a burden she was unable to ignore. He had always been there, watching over her life from the shadows, controlling things. He was now her biggest threat, having once been her father's fiercest opponent.
Eliot took a protective stance and moved forward. "Who are you?"
A chilly smile twisted the black king's lips. "I am the one who has been abandoned, neglected, and deceived; I am the one who has waited in the dark." And I have come for what is rightfully mine, Leah.
Leah felt sick to her stomach. "No. This will not go unpunished. You *can't*.
The king laughed mockingly and softly. "Oh, but I have it already."
The world around Leah shuddered violently before she could muster the strength to fight back. She was drawn in as a storm of shadows started to swirl about them, causing the ground to split open and the sky to become darker.
Even though the dark king was oppressive, Leah's determination became stronger. She had persevered through her darkest moments. She would not be broken by this. Now she had an option. She could either rise or plunge with him into the abyss.
The raw, untapped force still simmering beneath her skin made her fingers thrill with the rift's energy. Even while the king had a powerful aura, Leah possessed *the heart of the rift*, which he did not.
Leah's voice was firm as she quickly raised her hands. "I will not be under your power. Nothing will be under your control anymore.
Leah was unable to identify the emotion that flickered in the king's eyes—fear? Fear? However, it passed as swiftly as it had appeared, and the storm surrounding them grew stronger.
"You believe you have the rift down pat?" His tone was sarcastic and low. "I *am* the rift." It is who I am. Something that is beyond your control has awakened.
Leah responded, "I will take that chance," resisting the urge to stand up straight.
However, the king's eyes glowed with ill intent, and then a tendril of darkness emerged, around Leah's wrists and drawing her in his direction.
Eliot hurried forward, but the king held up his hand before he could get to her. His body crashed into the ground as he was struck by an imperceptible barrier.
When the dark king's icy fingers closed around Leah's throat and raised her off the ground, she screamed, her heart pounding. "Daughter, this is it. You are my final sacrifice."
Leah felt her life slipping away in the king's clutches as the pressure increased and her vision became blurry. Her abilities were still undeveloped and erratic. With a terrible certainty, she recognized that she was losing.
However, when night fell, Leah felt a stirring within of her that was much more powerful and primordial than anything she had ever used. The rift was no longer the only one. It was the power that was exclusively hers, the essence of her *true* being.
Leah fought against the king's smothering hold with a savage cry, her body exploding with strength. For the first time, she sensed a connection to the very center of the universe as energy crackled through the air.
She yelled, "Enough!" as her hands glowed brightly. She broke the darkness that bound her in a single motion, sending the king reeling backward.
He was obviously angry as he glared at her. "You believe you have triumphed?"
Leah remained erect, her resolve unwavering despite her labored breathing. "No. However, I am also not losing.
The king was sent tumbling to the ground as a wave of pure light and a burst of power exploded from her hands.
The universe shook as the fissure started to flicker and wobble, the king's power waning, but Leah realized, horribly, that he was not yet defeated as she stared down at him. More menacing than ever, his laughter actually reverberated through the storm.
The monarch rose slowly, his eyes glimmering with ancient malice, his figure now drenched with darkness. "In comparison to me, you are *nothing*. Are you sure you can manage this power?
Even though Leah's heart was racing, she was not giving up. She was unable to.
With a deep growl, Leah stated, "I do not need to control it." "I simply must stop you."
The storm swirled like a living thing, and the tension in the air crackled around them. However, a new presence started to emerge beneath the surface. Much more dangerous, colder, and darker.
After that, a second figure appeared from the shadows. They were approached by a dark person, entirely covered in black, whose presence was oppressive, much stronger than anything Leah had ever experienced.
She muttered, "No," as her breath caught in her throat. "This… *this* can not happen."
Dark power filled the figure's silky, low voice. "Leah, she is not the only one who has ascended. You have manipulated me. then it is time for you to make the payment."
Leah's blood raced cold as the truth hit her like a ton of bricks as the new figure came into full view. *He was the one. * Alive, her father. And more perilous than before.
