The Broken Realm
In front of them, the world shattered. A great split opened in the sky, the fracture now a chasm that swallowed everything in its path. As though reality itself were yielding to an invisible force, the air and the landscape were warping and twisting. Once solid and unyielding structures and trees vanished like sand in the wind. And Leah felt the full force of the turmoil weighing down on her as she stood at the middle of it all.
Her voice trembled as she gasped, "Eliot," "It is getting worse." We must put an end to it.
Eliot, however, could hardly hear her. Everything was overpowered by the roar of the rift and the devastating force of the energy tearing them apart. Leah's shape was blazing with uncontained brightness, yet it was not the same light he had been accustomed to seeing. This was wilder, darker, and unmanageable.
Her feelings, uncertainty, and pain had been nourished by the rift, and now it was devouring her. All would be lost if Leah lost herself in it.
"Leah, *please*!" Eliot grabbed her hand and reached for her, his voice breaking through the storm. Her strength made his fingertips tremble, and the energy burst through his body like wildfire. "You must resist it! Do not let it lead you astray.
With the pressure of the rift pressing against her chest, Leah closed her eyes. The abyss, the thirst, the old power that had been reawakened inside her and now threatened to devour everything—she could feel it. It was just too much. It is too much to manage and too much to regulate.
"Leah!" Once more, Eliot's voice was sharper. Her eyes opened. He clenched his fingers.
She sensed that she was sliding, that her identity was being pulled into the chasm, that the boundaries of herself were being ripped away, that she was lost in the emptiness.
She opened her mouth to scream, but before she could do so, a burst of energy from the rift rushed forward, knocking her and Eliot to the ground. It grew dark.
As the world whirled around her, Leah's chest tightened and she gasped for air. The explosion debris penetrated her skin, sending a stinging sting down her side. With his palm warm on hers, Eliot was by her side, helping her stand up.
In the midst of the chaos, he remarked, "We can not let go of each other," with a kind vow.
Leah knew it was too late, too, even as she nodded. Beyond them the rift had widened. It had evolved into a living being that fed on their desires and fears.
"Leah," Eliot said firmly now, requesting her focus. "Observe me."
For a moment, she felt the warmth of his love pierce the oppressive blackness surrounding her as she looked into his eyes. She gained strength from it. Her palm trembled as her abilities surged again, threatening to break free as she reached for him.
Something else stirred, though, as the light started to pulse from her fingers. A familiar, dark shadow started to emerge from the rift's depths. A person—her mom. She was tethered to the darkness by the one who had deceived her.
Through the commotion, her mother's voice boomed, "You *are* the rift, Leah." It is you. It was always your destiny to destroy this world.
As her mother's shape rose from the shadowy abyss and loomed over them like a terrifying titan, the earth underneath them shook.
Leah collapsed into Eliot's arms as her knees gave way. "No, I won't—" However, when her mother's figure approached with her hands extended, her words became stuck in her throat.
Leah experienced a wave of rage and a burning sensation in her chest as her mother's form came to life. It was more than simply fury; it was something deeper and older, a force that had always been there, dormant, just waiting for the proper time to strike.
"Did not you always know?" Leah's words were poisoned, and her voice broke. "That I would be the one to put an end to everything. This was set up by you. This devastation was always about your control, not just about me.
Her mother's icy chuckle reverberated like a warped symphony throughout the landscape. "Leah, you were always just a pawn in a much bigger game. Do you believe that your relationship with Eliot will save you? Do you believe that love can save you?
The earth underneath them was engulfed by the swirling mass of darkness as the fissure grew larger and pulsed in response. Leah sensed it. Her deepest anxieties were being uncovered by the icy fingers of the emptiness as they slid into her thoughts. Was her mother correct? Had it all been staged?
Eliot responded, "No, Leah," as he gently cupped her face and made her look into his eyes. "This is not as strong as you *are*. Your mother is not you. Do not allow her to dictate to you.
However, Leah felt her strength sliding away from her as he spoke. Her essence was now attached to the rift, which *was* a part of her. All along, her mother had been correct.
Nevertheless, an unforeseen event occurred. Leah was trying to isolate herself from the rift's impact when she heard a voice in her head that was not Eliot's or her mother's.
She recognized the voice from her history. She believed she had lost the voice.
The voice echoed in Leah's head, the words a gentle, musical hum that stood in stark contrast to the turmoil all around her, and her heart twitched.
"Leah, you are not by yourself."
Her throat tightened each breath. That voice was familiar to her. Her father owned it.
The kindness of the voice was evident despite its faintness. Leah closed her eyes and concentrated all of her concentration on it, grabbing for the momentary solace it provided. However, as she did, her mother's presence loomed over her again, her hold becoming more firm.
"You believe you will be able to withstand me?" Her mother spat, her voice now displaying anger. "Leah, you are mine. The voice of your father is merely a relic, a reflection of who you really are.
The louder her father's shouting got, the faster Leah's heartbeat. *"Leah, you were always more powerful than this. Fight for your rights. Defend the world you care about.
She felt a wave of emotion that was uncontrollable as something inside her broke—shattered. For a moment, the darkness was pushed aside by the explosion of light inside her.
However, as optimism grew, the world started to fall apart beneath her feet. Everything in its path was about to be devoured by the rift.
With her heart and head at odds, Leah's body shook under the weight of her might. She had always been aware of her uniqueness. But now, Leah was not sure who she really was because of her mother's influence, the pull of the divide, and her own worries.
However, she came to a realization while Eliot embraced her and stood by her side. She *had* the option.
In a calm, unwavering voice, he whispered, "You are not alone."
Leah gave a nod. "Together," she responded in a whisper, her voice almost audible over the commotion.
She pushed aside the dark energy of the rift and the oppressive weight of her mother's control by focusing all of her light and love and allowing it to flow through her with all of her remaining power. *She was the key* She had the ability to halt this.
And Leah's body radiated more light than the sun as the rift started to close. She was battling for everything she had ever loved, not just for herself.
However, the ground under them shattered before she could take the last step, and a fresh, unidentified danger surfaced from the rift's depths.
