Shattered Realities

Beneath them, the formerly tranquil clearing shook, turning into a war zone of warped shadows. With sadistic satisfaction, the guy who had exposed himself as the puppet master watched as Eliot's wolf form snarled and his golden eyes went wild. All about them, the changing terrain appeared to throb with an energy that was beyond human control.

“What have you done?” With her gaze flitting between Eliot and the enigmatic person, Anna's voice was tight. "This location—this is not genuine."

A dark smirk twisted the man's lips. Yes, it is really real. But I have ensured that you will not get away with it so easy. You have all been drawn into my realm. A universe where you are merely pieces in a game that you do not comprehend.

With her heart thumping in her chest, Leah remained still. She felt more cut off from Eliot, the man she loved and the wolf she feared, than ever before as the darkness seemed to enclose them.

Her voice wavered as she continued, "You are lying."

The man stepped toward her and gave a wicked laugh. Am I? Child, I have been playing this game for ages. All of your actions and thoughts have contributed to my design. But you will eventually find out. You will discover that even your so-called "fortune" was never up to you.

Leah swallowed, feeling as though her feet were anchored to the floor, her mind racing. She desired to escape the evil power that was engulfing Eliot, to fight, to run. But she was unable to.

An electrical shockwave swept through the clearing as the ground underneath them cracked loudly. Something had shifted in Eliot, but his transformation was completely apparent as his roar sliced through the confusion. He was more than simply the wolf now. He was a little... darker.

The earth's split was no coincidence. It was a rift, a portal to something old, something buried deep. Dark mist swirled from inside the abyss, bringing an unearthly cold to the air.

The breath caught in Anna's throat. “What is that?”

The man had a glimmer of satisfaction in his eyes. That is where the end begins. Everyone has been so oblivious. You had the truth in front of you. You have sensed the power I have been accumulating, the one that has governed everything, have you not?

Leah's heart was pounding. Yes, it was. Even when she was not aware of it, she had always sensed it—a faint presence lurking in the background, a force that had influenced her choices and behavior. Now everything made sense, including the connection she shared with Eliot and the odd attraction to the unknown. But they had not made that decision. Another person had planned it.

"It is you who has been playing tricks on us," Leah said in a hushed tone. "We all."

The shadows around him moved as though they were alive as the man nodded slowly. "Yes. The game is done now. The finishing touches have been added. And the secret lies with you, Leah.

With a roar that cut through the discourse, Eliot's inner strength vibrated with an intensity that bordered on evil. The man she had loved, the one who had worked for their relationship and shared dreams with her, was no longer with her. He was now an uncontrollable storm, a force of nature.

Eliot stared at Leah, his eyes caught between anger and recognition. He growled, "You ought to have avoided me," with a newfound venom in his voice. "I told you, Leah."

Fear biting at her gut, Leah stepped back. The man she loved was not the only one. Eliot was not even here anymore. The power that ruled him, the wolf inside him, had taken over in a way she never would have imagined.

"Please, fight it, Eliot," she begged, her voice shaking. Get back to me.

His eyes flickered for a second, a flash of recognition that gave her heart a hopeful shock. But in a flash, everything vanished, to be replaced by a looming blackness.

"Leah, you have picked the wrong side," Eliot said in a deep, menacing voice. "This is not where I am lost."

Sensing the shift in the atmosphere, Anna moved closer and held out her palm toward the fissure. "We cannot allow him to give in to this power completely. Now is the time to take action.

The man held up a hand, his fingers moving through the atmosphere like a conductor planning the mayhem. It is too late, Anna. It is too late for you all.

With her thoughts racing, Leah glanced at Anna. Something had to be done. This needed to end. She was unsure of how, though. Their surroundings appeared to be bending and twisting, and Eliot was becoming more and more lost in the shadows.

The rift's shadows twisted and tightened around Eliot as a piercing, bone-chilling cry burst from his throat. It seemed like forever, and then—Eliot swung.

Although Leah's senses told her to flee, she was unable to leave him. She could not stand by and watch as the guy she loved turned into a monster.

She reached out for the strength that had once bound them together, trying to protect herself. The connection remained, brittle yet alive. It seemed to be crying out to her, as it beat in time with her heart.

With a huge, angry body, Eliot's wolf form slammed into her. She was knocked out of breath as the impact's force brought her plummeting to the ground.

“Leah!” Even when Anna yelled, it was too late.

Leah's head whirled as she fought for breath. She needed to struggle. Before it was too late, she had to cut him off.

She was knocked reeling by a flood of energy that rushed through her body as she reached out to touch Eliot's fur. Something from within started to rise as the earth's breach widened. Something much more terrible than they could have ever envisioned.

The ground shook as the air crackled with static electricity. The rift's shadows rose up, bending into shapes too gloomy to understand. The pandemonium was calling up a power that had been asleep for generations, something old that was now coming to life.

Eliot was on her again, his claws digging into the ground next to her, before Leah could even respond. His golden-flecked eyes gazed down at her, bewildered and tormented.

"There is still time," she muttered, her voice trembling. "You are not him." You are not the creature.

The gloom that had taken hold of him, however, was unrelenting. He felt the rift's strength surge through him, overwhelming all else.

From a distance, Anna yelled in a panicked tone. Leave him alone, Leah! He is feeding on the rift! It is strengthening him!

The person who had been observing from the background, the one who had planned all of this, came forward. Even though the man's face was still hidden by the darkness, his words rang out like a foreboding prophecy: "Now, the real struggle begins." And none of you will make it through this time.
