Chapter 14 The Fire Trial
Chapter 14 The Fire Trial
I stood at the centre with the scar from the last outburst. The Council Chamber felt cold. I was surrounded by Cescent’s elders who watched me from their seats carved in blackstones and ash wood. Their silence to me felt much more heavier than an accusation.
Theron broke the silence first.
“She must face the Trial.”
The chamber was filled with murmur... Mira stayed by my side with her body tightened while Rae took a step forward before I caught his arm.
“The Fire Trial?” Mira asked, her voice trembling with restrained anger. “That’s not a test. It’s punishment.”
“It’s tradition,” one of the elders countered. “Every wolf of uncertain loyalty faces their reflection in flame. If her soul is pure, she will emerge stronger. If not…” His words trailed into the hollow space that followed.
I wasn’t scared. “Then I’ll burn and prove them right,” my tone was firm as steel. “But I won’t hide from what I am.”
Theron’s gaze met mine with an expression that he is proud. “Then it is decided.”

By dusk, the Trial Chamber was prepared in a circular cavern beneath Crescent Keep, its walls were carved with runes older than any living wolf. At its heart blazed a pyre, blue-white flames licking upward in twisting pillars. The air shimmered with heat and memory; many had entered those fires but few had returned unchanged.
Rae fastened the bracers around my wrists, he then stopped and whispered, “You don’t have to prove anything to them, you know ?”
“Yes, I do,” I replied quietly. “Not for them but for me.”
He hesitated, then lowered his head. “Then I’ll wait by the gate. No matter what comes out of those flames… I’ll know it’s you.”
Mira touched my arm. “The fire shows the truth, Aria. Don’t fight what it shows even if it hurts.”
In response, I gave a small brave smile. “I’ve lived my whole life in pain. Maybe it’s time I understand it.”

The moment I stepped into the circle, the flames coiled around me like living serpents. I could feel the heat in my skin until my breath felt like molten glass. Then came silence as if the world had vanished.
When I opened my eyes, I could see a different world.
I was standing in a field of ash beneath a red sky. The ruins of Crescent Keep loomed ahead, consumed by ghostly fire. Wolves I knew, Mira, Rae, even Theron were laid scattered in the dust, their eyes hollow and their bodies charred. I was at the centre.
Then I saw my twin, smiling cruelly and radiantly. “So this is what purity looks like,” it sneered. “You think you’re saving them. You’re the spark that ends them.”
I felt my throat tighten, “You’re just an illusion.”
“I’m what you’re becoming,” the reflection whispered as its flames turned black. “The Hollow Flame’s vessel. The Queen’s curse was reborn.”
The clouds became dark and a storm of embers came together as I raised my hands. As the flames rushed towards me, I caught them instinctively but they were cold and blue like the dream. It was the same as what I saw when the frost whispered ‘sister.’
My heart began to pound heavily, “No,” I gasped. “That’s not who I am!”
The shadow laughed, splitting a voice in two. One was mine while the other was older and echoing from an abyss.“Then prove it.”
Suddenly, we collided in a storm of fire and fury. Every blow was a memory: my banishment, humiliation and loneliness. The shadow fought with everything I hated about myself - the doubt, the anger and the fear of being nothing but a weapon.
I fell twice then the ash burned my palms as I tried to push up again. The shadow pressed forward like it was making a mockery of my stance, pain and power.
“You can’t win,” it hissed. “You’re not meant to.”
I closed my eyes and for a moment, I heard my mother’s lullaby although faint. “Even flames can heal, my child. Fire is not destruction, It’s rebirth.”
By the time I opened my eyes, my tears had turned gold.
I thrust my hands forward, not in rage but in surrender and the flames changed. The blue turned gold, pure and blinding. They didn’t burn but cleansed, then the shadow screamed, its form unraveling into smoke.
“Fire is my truth,” I whispered. “But I choose what it means.”
I woke up gasping on the cavern floor as my body glowed faintly with lines of gold tracing across my skin like constellations. By this time, the lights had dimmed low. Mira knelt beside me in surprise.
“Aria… your flames. They’re…”
“Alive,” Theron finished, stepping closer. His expression was a mixture of pride and wonder. “The mark of a soul unbroken.”
The council members murmured among themselves and for the first time, there was no fear in their eyes but reverence. I had faced the Trial and survived even transcended.
But inside, I felt a faint coldness pulsing beneath the warmth, like frost was hidden beneath flame.
That night, the Crescent pack howled in triumph while I stood apart, watching the stars. Rae approached me with a soft smile on his lips.
“They finally see you,the way I always did.”
As I turned to Rae, the golden lines on my skin were already fading, but my eyes still gleamed faintly. “They see what I showed them. Not what’s still inside.”
Rae frowned. “Don’t tell me you are still doubting.”
But before I could answer, a wind blew cold, sharp, unnatural. The flames in the torches flashed blue for a second like an echo of the frost that haunted my dream.
From a distance, I could see a single flare of blue light rise into the night sky.
Mira, who had joined us some moments ago, traced my gaze. “What is that?”
I didn’t answer at first, then I looked at Mira and Rae then whispered,
“She’s awake.”
