Chapter 11 The Forgotten Tomb

Chapter 11 The Forgotten Tomb
Theron had gone ahead, leaving myself, Rae and Mira behind. As we drew closer, the wind carried the smell of damp soil and dying embers.
My boots suddenly sank into the wet moss as I halted before a cliffside half-swallowed by creeping vines. The mark on my chest pulsed faintly, as though it was urging me to come closer.

“check this out,” Rae said as he squatted beside a patch of disturbed soil. His fingers brushed the mud away revealing faint carvings of old runes spiraling like veins of flame. “This doesn't look natural. Someone wanted this place to be forgotten.”

Mira’s lantern flashed as she stepped beside them. “These are Ancient Crescent tongues mixed with royal sigils.”

Rae frowned. “Royal? You mean…”

“The Ember Court,” Mira finished quietly. “This is her mark.”

I stared at the stone face before them. Beneath the tangled vines, the symbol on the wall pulsed with a soft glow looking exactly like the mark on my chest. For a moment, it seemed to throb in same beat with my heartbeat, like a dark echo. The shape shined like a burning crown that flickered with an other light."

Mira and Rae stepped back, but I reached out. I brushed my fingers through the symbol, and the ground trembled. The stone cracked, dust was falling like rain. A deep groan echoed through the valley as the ground split revealing a hidden stair spiraling downward into the shadow.

Rae held my arm. “you can't just go in, we don’t know what’s inside.” But I looked back with a faint smile, “That’s exactly why we have to see atleast to know what we are deadline with.”

The place was silent except for the dripping water sound and the distant echo of shifting rock. The air became warmer as we moved deeper, carrying the faint scent of metal. Our torches were so bright against the walls that showed fire-shaped runes – each one pulsing faintly, as if alive.

As we got to the base of the stairs,we saw an opening and entered a vast chamber carved in stone. Statues of wolves stood around a stage where a massive stone door was sealed by melted silver.

Mira approached one of the statues, tracing her hand along its sides. “These aren’t Crescent-made. They’re from before the Divide, when the Ember Queen ruled over all packs.”

My gaze shifted to the group and I saw dozens of skeletal remains lay in a half-circle, their armor had rusted and their weapons had turned to bone. Each of them had the same flame-shaped mark burned into their ribs. I knelt, brushing away dust from one skull, and saw the faint trace of an emblem carved in gold – The Order of the Flameborn.

My breath ceased. “They served her.” I whispered. “And they died protecting something.”

Mira squatt beside me as her eyes narrowed, “Or someone.”

A faint hum came through the air. The mark on my chest glowed brighter, spilling gold across the tomb walls. The melted seal on the door began to stir, silver veins slithering open like liquid mercury.

“Aria!” Rae’s warning was already too late. The door suddenly cracked open, releasing hot heat and a voice that didn't sound human.

“You've returned... flame-born child.”

The whisper slid into my mind like smoke. The torches flared, reacting to the presence. I stepped forward despite Rae’s hand gripping my wrist. The voice beckoned again. It was soft, mournful, ancient then I crossed the threshold.

The inner chambers glowed with molten light. In the center stood an altar of black stone, surrounded by rings of sigils. Above it hung a mural carved into the ceiling, it was the Ember Queen in her full majesty, her crown burning bright, alongside two shadowed figures. One held her crown aloft. The other shattered it in half.

Mira’s breath hitched. “It’s the prophecy… ‘Two flames born of one soul; one to destroy, one to restore.’”

Rae turned toward Mira, “what does that mean?”

Mira’s eyes gifted toward me. “Meaning she may not be the only heir of the Queen’s fire.”

The air grew heavier, and the voice spoke again, this time clearer and feminine yet fractured, like an echo split in two.

“Find me before the eclipse… or all will burn again.”

I stepped backward, holding my chest as heat came through the mark. Images flashed behind my eyes – a castle made of fire, a woman with her face standing over a field of ash, a crown breaking apart. Then, darkness.

Rae caught me as I fell. “Aria!”

I gasped for breathe blinking away the visions. The figure breaking the crown now turned toward me, its eyes hollow, mirroring me.

“She’s calling to me,” I whispered. “But it’s not just the Queen. There’s another… one who shares her fire.”

Mira knelt beside the altar, studying the rings of sigils. “These bindings were meant to contain power and not protect it. Whoever the second flame is, they were sealed away.”

Rae looked between them. “Sealed… where?”

Mira hesitated, tracing the final rune. “The markings lead north. Toward the Hollow Throne.”

The name echoed like thunder through the chamber. Even the flames dimmed.

“The Hollow Throne?” Rae muttered. “That’s a cursed region. No one returns from there.”

My gaze hardened. “Then that’s where we’ll go.”

Rae shook his head. “You nearly burned yourself out in the last fight, and now you want to walk into another death trap?”

My gaze met his stare. “If I don’t, we’ll never know what she started or why I was given her fire.”

Mira’s eyes softened. “The prophecy doesn’t just speak of two flames. It speaks of choice. One to restore, one to destroy. You need to be sure which path is yours before you go chasing ghosts.”

I looked back at the painting on the wall and said, “Maybe I just don’t have a choice.”

We left the tomb in silence, each of us burdened by the weight of what we had seen. It was almost sunrise but the valley stretched out before us quietly with the scent of smoke still lingering.

Rae walked beside me, his voice low. “If there’s really another like you… what do you think it means?”

I didn’t answer immediately as I brushed my fingers against the faint burn marks still tracing my skin. “It means the Queen’s fire didn’t die. It was divided.”

Mira followed behind, murmuring under her breath, “Two halves of the same flame… but what happens when they meet?”

No one spoke after that because the answer lay somewhere in the north beyond the Hollow Throne, beyond reason, where the Ember Queen’s unfinished legacy waited.

As we climbed our horses, a faint red light rose over the horizon but not the sun, it was something else. It looks like something full of energy, pulsing like a heartbeat across the sky.

I looked at it and said,
“Whatever is waiting out there… it’s already awake.”

The mark on my chest burned once like a promise or a warning.

That night, I dreamt again of the painting but this time, the second shadow stepped out of the stone.
It smiled with my face and Its eyes blazed brighter than mine.
And when it spoke, it was my voice,
“You’re not the only heir, Aria. You’re just the first to burn.”
