Chapter 59
Isabella led the five candidates through the polished marble hallways until they reached the grand office of the dean. The heavy wooden door, carved with intricate elemental symbols, stood slightly ajar. Taking a deep breath, Isabella pushed it open and stepped inside, the students following closely behind.
Inside, sitting behind an ornate desk piled with scrolls and glowing crystals, was Emma. The dean’s presence was commanding yet graceful, her youthful face framed by flowing dark hair, eyes sharp and full of wisdom. The candidates exchanged astonished looks—this was not the stern, elderly figure they had imagined.
One of them whispered, “She looks so young... How can someone like her be the dean?”
Isabella smiled gently, sensing their surprise. “Appearances can be deceiving. Emma is one of the most powerful elementalists in the world. Her strength and leadership far surpass her years.”
Emma stood and approached them with a warm but authoritative smile. “Welcome to the Elemental Academy. I’ve heard much about each of you. You carry a great responsibility as candidates for the Son of Light.”
Her voice was steady, yet kind, and the students felt a mixture of nervousness and pride swell within them. This was the moment their journey truly began.
Isabella stepped forward and respectfully greeted Emma before beginning her report. “Dean Emma, we have located the five reincarnated Sons of Light. Along the way, we encountered many signs of the demon god’s power—his minions are growing bolder and more frequent. It is clear the threat is spreading.”
Emma listened intently, her eyes narrowing with concern. She placed a reassuring hand on Isabella’s shoulder and spoke with calm authority. “Isabella, I commend you for your courage and perseverance. You and the candidates have done well to come this far. Know that the Elemental Academy is fortified with powerful elemental magic arrays. These wards form a protective barrier that no demon’s minion can breach. The academy grounds are secure.”
She glanced around at the five young candidates standing before her, their faces a mix of exhaustion and determination. “Within these walls, you will be safe to train and grow stronger. We will prepare you to face the darkness ahead.”
Isabella nodded, feeling a measure of relief, though the weight of their mission still pressed heavily on her. The battle to come would be long, but for now, they had found sanctuary.
Isabella moved quickly, coordinating with the Academic Affairs Office staff to ensure everything was ready for the five students. Training would begin tomorrow without delay.
The staff led Isabella and the candidates through winding corridors to their quarters. Each student was assigned a small, private room. The rooms were modest—just a bed, a simple wooden table, a chair, and a wardrobe for their belongings.
Isabella glanced around and noted the stone sink in the shared bathroom nearby, equipped with only the bare essentials: a few basic toiletries and towels. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was enough for their needs.
“This will be your home for now,” Isabella told the candidates, “a place to rest and focus on what’s ahead. The road will be hard, but we start fresh here.”
The students nodded silently, their faces a mixture of nervousness and resolve. They were far from the comforts of their old lives, but the importance of their mission pressed down on them. Tomorrow would mark the beginning of everything.
Nova pouted, crossing her arms as she looked around the simple room. “I’ve never lived in such a plain place before,” she said with a small frown. “But I guess after sleeping out in the forest, on the grass, and even in a barn during our journey to find the Sons of Light, this feels like a palace. Having a bed and a bathroom is a huge upgrade.”
She smiled faintly, trying to make light of the situation. “At least I won’t have to worry about bugs crawling on me tonight.”
Isabella chuckled softly, appreciating Nova’s attempt to stay positive. “It’s not much, but it’s a safe place. And soon, this place will be where you grow stronger.”
The other candidates exchanged looks, their nervousness easing slightly as they took in the quiet comfort of their new rooms. For now, this modest space was their sanctuary.
After the rooms were arranged, the five candidates for the Son of Light changed into the crisp, white student robes. The fabric felt smooth against their skin, a symbol of the new chapter they were stepping into. A staff member from the Academic Affairs Office greeted them and offered to give a guided tour of the sprawling academy.
As they walked, the group marveled at the sheer size of the place. Beyond the famous central square, vast courtyards stretched out in every direction, each one a world of its own. They passed the residences of the twelve instructors, each courtyard fully self-contained with its own dining halls, classrooms, practice grounds, and even private libraries.
Isabella explained quietly, “Each instructor runs their own courtyard. Students live, learn, and train there, mostly isolated from others. They rarely mingle except during major conferences or academy-wide events organized by the dean.”
Nova glanced around, absorbing every detail. “So the students stick to their own groups? No chance to make friends outside their courtyards?”
Isabella nodded, “It keeps the training focused. The instructors want to cultivate deep bonds and specialized skills within their teams. It’s a strict but effective system.”
The five candidates exchanged looks. The academy was vast and impressive, but the thought of being confined mostly within one courtyard brought a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was a world very different from the one they had known before.
At night, Nova returned to her room. The simplicity of the space—the bare walls, the modest bed, the single chair—felt even more stark in the quiet darkness. She sank onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling, imagining the years ahead. Here, in this isolated courtyard, she would live with the other candidates, bound by the academy’s strict rules, separated from her family.
Her thoughts drifted to her father’s warm smile, her mother’s gentle voice, and the laughter of her three brothers. Would she see them again soon? Or would this place become her entire world for the foreseeable future? The weight of loneliness pressed down on her chest. Despite the promise of power and purpose, the isolation felt like a heavy shadow settling over her heart.
For a long while, Nova just sat there, feeling the quiet ache of separation, wondering how she would find strength in a pla
ce so unfamiliar and distant from everything she loved.
