Chapter 46
Back at the gathering place, the atmosphere was heavy even before James finally broke the silence. His voice came out impulsive and sharp, cutting through the quiet like a blade. Without holding back, he turned his anger toward Lestat. His words were harsh and full of accusation as he called Lestat a pervert and a bastard in front of everyone. James’s bitterness was clear, and he did not hesitate to demand that Isabella strip Lestat of his status as a Child of Light. His tone was filled with raw emotion—hurt, jealousy, and frustration all mixed together. He was furious, not only because of what he saw as Lestat’s betrayal but also because of the complicated feelings tangled up with Aurora and Nova.
Isabella stepped forward, her expression calm but serious. She didn’t respond with anger or frustration, even though James’s accusations had stirred the whole group. Instead, she placed a gentle hand on James’s shoulder, speaking in a soothing voice. “James,” she said softly but firmly, “I understand how difficult this is for you. Your feelings are valid, and this situation is complicated. But we must not rush to judgment or let anger control us. I promise you I will have a thorough conversation with Aurora. We need to know the truth before taking any drastic actions.” Her words were meant to reassure James, to remind him that she was there to guide the group through the turmoil.
Then she addressed the rest of the group, her tone steady and commanding enough to quiet the whispers that had begun to rise. “I ask everyone here to stop discussing this matter for now. We have a long journey ahead, and we cannot let distractions pull us apart. Let us focus on moving forward together.” The group fell silent, the tension lingering but unspoken as they nodded in reluctant agreement.
They resumed their walk deeper into the canyon, the rugged path winding beneath towering rock walls that seemed to close in around them. The air was cooler here, carrying the faint scent of damp earth and distant moss. Each step felt heavier as the weight of the earlier confrontation settled in their minds. The canyon’s shadows lengthened, mirroring the unease growing quietly among the group. Though no one spoke of it, everyone was aware that something had shifted, and the fragile unity was at risk.
Later, when the others were busy setting up camp and preparing for the evening, Oliver and Lestat found a moment alone with Isabella. The flickering light of the small fire cast long shadows, and their voices dropped to whispers as they shared their concerns. Oliver spoke first, detailing the odd moments he had noticed—the way Aurora’s presence seemed to change the atmosphere, how she seemed to guide events subtly, almost as if nothing was left to chance. Lestat added his experience—the dizzy spell he felt when looking into her eyes, the sense that her influence was stronger than any magic he had ever encountered.
Isabella listened carefully, her face thoughtful and grave. “I have noticed her strangeness too,” she admitted, her voice low. “There is something about Aurora that doesn’t sit right with me. But we cannot reveal our suspicions to the whole group—not yet. Doing so would only breed fear and distrust, and we need to keep the group’s morale intact for now.”
She paused, glancing at both of them. “Before we return to the human kingdom, I will uncover the truth about Aurora. Whatever her purpose may be, we will know it soon enough. Until then, we must be cautious and keep this knowledge between us. Watch her closely, but do not act rashly. We need to stay united, even in the face of uncertainty.”
Oliver and Lestat nodded in agreement, though the weight of the secret settled heavily on their shoulders.
At night, the group camped deep in the canyon. Everything seemed quiet and still. But suddenly, a scream pierced the silence. It was Nova’s voice, sharp and full of fear. James woke immediately and realized Nova was not beside him. His heart raced as he woke the others.
“Nova’s gone,” James said urgently. “She’s in trouble.”
Isabella took charge and told everyone to get ready. They quickly left the camp and began searching through the canyon. Soon, they discovered that Samuel and Aurora were missing too. The group grew more concerned.
Isabella decided, “I will look for Aurora. Lestat and Oliver, find Nova and Samuel.”
Without hesitation, Lestat and Oliver agreed. The group split up and moved quickly, hoping to find their missing friends before anything bad happened.
Lestat and Oliver soon reached a small lake. What they saw shocked them both. Samuel stood there, holding his wand tightly, his lips moving in a rapid chant of strange, unfamiliar words. With each wave of his wand, sharp cones of ice fell from above like cold, biting raindrops aimed directly at Nova.
Not far from him, Nova was caught in the attack. She panicked, trying to summon her fire element power to defend herself. But something was wrong. She couldn’t control the flames the way she usually could. Her hands trembled as she tried to guide the fire, but the power faltered. Unable to strike back properly, she dodged desperately, narrowly avoiding the icy cones as they struck the ground around her.
Her voice rose in panic, shouting for help, but the cold cones kept coming. Samuel’s attack seemed relentless, and the gap between them closed. Lestat and Oliver exchanged a worried glance, knowing they had to act fast before things got worse.
Lestat and Oliver stood frozen for a moment, their eyes wide with disbelief as they watched Samuel, usually so quiet and unassuming, summon a torrent of sharp ice cones from his wand. The air around him crackled with raw energy, and the precision with which he controlled the elemental force left no doubt about his mastery. Neither of them had ever seen Samuel unleash such power before, and a mix of shock and reluctant admiration washed over them. There was envy too—Samuel had been underestimated by them all for too long.
But admiration quickly gave way to urgency. Nova was clearly struggling. The fire element she tried to call upon wavered and faltered, unable to fully respond to her commands. She dodged frantically, eyes wide with panic, as the icy cones rained down around her. Each close call sent sharp shards of frost scattering across the ground, underscoring how close the danger really was.
Oliver’s heart pounded as he realized how dire the situation had become, but it was James who acted first. A fierce roar tore from his throat as he lunged forward with raw determination, cutting through the tension like a blade. He was fueled by desperation and anger, his protective instinct for Nova igniting a surge of power within him. Nothing else mattered—only stopping Samuel and saving Nova.
Lestat’s jaw tightened as he followed James’s charge, the moment demanding every ounce of focus they had. Both men moved with adrenaline, fully aware that the next few s
econds could change everything.
