Chapter 54 – The Night Before the Flame

Chapter 54 – The Night Before the Flame
The Keep was asleep.
Outside Elara’s window, moonlight poured like silver through the trees, but the halls were quiet, empty of footsteps and strategy. No war council. No guards. No sounds of blades sharpening.
Just stillness.
And one man standing at her doorway.
Kael didn’t knock.
He didn’t have to.
Elara looked up from where she stood by the fire. Her hair loose. Her body wrapped in nothing but a thin shift and the glow of her own heat.
“I said I’d go alone,” she murmured.
Kael stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“I’m not here to stop you,” he said. “I’m here to be with you.”
Elara didn’t move as he came closer. Her chest rose and fell just a little too fast.
“You think this is goodbye?” she asked.
“No,” Kael said. “I think this is ours.”
He reached her, hands gentle as he brushed a loose strand of hair from her cheek. His thumb lingered at the corner of her mouth.
“I’m not going to make promises I can’t keep,” he whispered. “But tonight, you’re not the Flamekeeper. You’re not the prophecy. You’re just… you.”
“And you?” she asked, voice trembling.
He leaned in.
“Yours.”
The kiss was slow, reverent.
Not rushed. Not claimed.
Offered.
Elara melted into it, arms winding around his neck as his hands slid to her hips. He pressed her back gently toward the bed, never breaking the kiss. Every inch of contact ignited something under her skin. Need. Fear. Longing.
They reached the edge of the mattress, and Kael paused.
“Elara,” he said, voice low, throat tight. “Tell me you want this.”
She looked up at him.
Eyes full of flame and tenderness.
“I want everything.”
His hands pulled the shift over her head.
It slid off like silk, and she stood bare before him, breath hitching as his eyes moved over her.
Not with lust.
But awe.
“You’re so beautiful,” he said quietly. “You always were.”
Elara reached for his tunic, pulling it over his head. Her fingers ran down the planes of his chest, tracing scars and muscles and memories.
“You’ve carried so much,” she whispered. “Let me carry you.”
He kissed her again, deeper this time.
His body pressed to hers, heat meeting heat, need meeting need.
She pulled him onto the bed with her, lips never parting, skin sliding against skin. Kael’s mouth moved down her neck, across her collarbone, down to her breasts.
He worshipped her with his mouth—slow, deliberate, driving her mad with the gentleness of it.
“Kael,” she gasped, arching beneath him.
His hands skimmed down her sides, her stomach, her thighs.
When he touched her, she moaned, hips lifting into his hand.
“You’re already shaking,” he murmured.
“Then do something about it,” she shot back, breathless.
He grinned.
“Gladly.”
He moved between her legs, lowering himself with the kind of reverence that made her thighs tremble. His tongue found her, slow and precise, drawing circles that made her toes curl. She tangled her hands in his hair, trying to stay quiet—but failing.
“Kael—oh, gods—”
He didn’t stop.
Not until she shattered against his mouth, gasping and crying out as her body arched off the bed.
When she opened her eyes again, he was hovering above her, eyes dark and blown wide with need.
“You taste like fire,” he said.
“And you,” she panted, “are evil.”
“Just passionate.”
“Liar.”
She pulled him down, kissing him fiercely, tasting herself on his lips. His cock pressed against her thigh—hard, hot, desperate.
“Now,” she whispered. “I want you now.”
Kael didn’t hesitate.
He lined himself up, watching her, waiting—
And then slid inside her with a slow, deep thrust that knocked the breath from her lungs.
They both moaned.
She clung to him, every inch of him stretching her, filling her. It was too much and not enough.
“Move,” she begged.
He did.
Slow at first, letting her feel everything.
Then harder.
Deeper.
Rhythmic.
Perfect.
They lost words quickly.
Only sounds.
Only sweat.
Only skin slapping skin and the creak of the bed and the fire crackling beside them.
She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him in harder.
He angled just right—and she cried out, clawing at his back.
“Elara,” he groaned, lips against her throat. “You feel like you were made for me.”
She bit his shoulder. “I was.”
They came together, loud and trembling, clinging so tightly it felt like they’d fall apart if they let go.
When they stilled, it was only to hold each other.
He collapsed beside her, panting, pulling her into his chest.
Their sweat cooled slowly. Her heartbeat slowed in time with his.
The silence stretched between them like silk.
Then Kael spoke.
“If you leave me again, I’m coming after you with nothing but a sword and a really petty grudge.”
Elara laughed into his neck. “Romantic.”
“I try.”
She kissed his chest.
“Thank you,” she said.
“For what?”
“For letting me be with you before everything burns again.”
He kissed her hair.
“Then let’s burn bright enough to remember.”
