27. Unexpected Love Blossoms
Paul's smile remained radiant as the elevator doors closed, his heart brimming with emotions he hadn't anticipated. The strange thing was that the woman in question didn't quite fit his usual preferences, yet here he was, feeling a rush of emotions that caught him off guard. As he stood there with his arms crossed, lost in his thoughts, his gaze drifted upwards.
Petro, his perceptive brother, sensed Paul's inner turmoil and tapped him on the shoulder, leaning in to speak discreetly. "Heading there, brother?" Paul's smile held steady, unperturbed by his brother's teasing. He responded candidly, unafraid of baring his feelings. "I know it might seem ridiculous, but I'm genuinely happy today." He looked at Petro, who nodded in understanding, affirming the sentiment.
Petro shared his own experience. "I can relate. Remember that time I was head over heels for my ex-girlfriend? I felt just as happy as you do now." Paul blinked, his expression a mix of surprise and uncertainty, his hands making subtle gestures. "I'm not in love or anything like that. Where did you even get that idea?" The elevator doors opened, and Petro stepped out, followed shortly by Phil.
The sadness in Phil's eyes was evident; he knew that Ellen harbored feelings for Paul, leaving him with little chance.
Phil made his way to his apartment while Paul hurriedly caught up to Petro, eager to discuss the situation. "Hey, you've got it all wrong. I'm not in love,"
Paul was adamant about denying his feelings. Petro chuckled and turned to his brother, the teasing glint still in his eyes. "Come on, brother. It's written all over your face. The entire party noticed the way you look at Ellen. Let's keep this between us, though. She feels something for you too. I saw it. For her sake, let's not expose her feelings, alright? Agreed, Phil?" Petro's gaze shifted between the two brothers, awaiting Phil's response.
Phil acquiesced. "Alright, I won't say a word. Why would I? Goodnight." He opened his apartment door, bidding the two goodnight as he stepped inside. With the door locked, he let out a frustrated sigh, raking his fingers through his messy hair before trudging to his room. Stripping off his clothes, he lay down, hoping for some semblance of sleep.
Paul turned to Petro, inquiring, "So, you just figured it out like that?" He crossed his arms and arched an eyebrow at his brother, who laughed at his skepticism. "Honestly, you're clueless about matters of the heart, brother. I could give you a crash course, but not tonight. I'm beat.
Sleep well, and who knows, maybe you'll dream of Ellen." Petro nodded to Paul, heading towards his own apartment. Paul followed suit, entering his apartment and locking the door behind him.
Flopping down on the couch, he replayed the events of the day in his mind, a wide grin tugging at his lips. Sleep seemed like a distant possibility as he found himself lost in thoughts of Ellen's face. "Ellen, what have you done to me?" he mused aloud, his gaze fixed on the ceiling, a man in love who couldn't contain his elation.
Shaking his head, he rose from the couch and made his way to his bedroom. Shedding his shirt, he settled onto the bed, hoping for some rest, or at least a semblance of it.
The morning sun cast its gentle rays outside, bringing warmth to the day. In a shared bed, Ellen and Sarah lay asleep, undisturbed. Ellen stirred, careful not to wake her slumbering friend, and slipped out of bed. She cradled Paul's jacket close, a tangible reminder of him, and made her way to the kitchen, as was her routine. The scent of his jacket enveloped her, and she couldn't help but smile as she prepared her tea.
Embracing the penthouse's stunning view, Ellen sipped her tea, her gaze drifting to the world below. Fueled by the joy of good dreams and Paul's lingering presence, she felt unusually invigorated. Her contentment led her to change into comfortable clothes—a pair of knee-length shorts and a short-sleeved blouse, topped with Paul's jacket.
After attending to her hygiene, she left a note for Sarah, informing her of a brief walk, and tucked her phone into her shorts pocket.
Eager to seize the day, Ellen made her way down the hallway with a spring in her step, mirroring Paul's morning enthusiasm. Unbeknownst to each other, they both had the same idea of wandering around the condo.
Ellen climbed the stairs with her headphones on, swaying to a romantic melody that resonated with her heart. Lost in her own world, she began to dance down the staircase.
Simultaneously, Paul descended the stairs, a smile gracing his lips as well. Inadvertently in sync, they almost collided on the same step. Ellen's footing wavered, but Paul instinctively reached out, pulling her close to steady her. Their eyes met at close range, and Paul's heart raced as he realized who was before him. Ellen's gaze locked with his, capturing a moment suspended in time.
The fragrance of Paul's presence enveloped Ellen, his smile inviting and comforting. He inquired with genuine concern, "Are you alright?" She nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. The serendipitous encounter felt like a perfect fusion of elements—the pulsating music in her ears, their proximity, and her heartbeat echoing their shared connection. Paul's hands remained on her shoulders, the touch lingering as unspoken emotions swirled between them.
Ellen found herself mesmerized by the intensity in Paul's gaze, his scent wrapping around her like a warm embrace. The encounter was a testament to the profound connection that had sprouted between them, a connection they had both started to acknowledge. The day was just beginning, yet it held the promise of something beautiful and transformative for them both.
