Chapter 72 She Looks a Lot Like a Tigress?
Their expressions suddenly turned a bit awkward.
Sophia... The name was more than familiar to both of them. They'd heard plenty about her.
The Chase family's former daughter-in-law. That messy divorce lawsuit that blew up everywhere, the kidnapping setup, the almost-assault, the Chase family holding a press conference to smear her only to get slapped in the face, and that ugly case where the Martinez daughter kidnapped someone and hurt them...
One thing after another, Miss Taylor was always at the center of the storm.
Forget the gossip. Arthur's mom had heard about her skills and reputation too. Sophia had done really well at Chase Group for a few years, a solid performer among the younger crowd with a good name.
This divorce mess, even though the Chase family tried to muddy the waters, anyone with eyes could see they were the ones who acted shady first. The girl was the victim, and she handled it with a clear head and quick decision.
Still... no matter how good she was, she was divorced.
Their own son, Arthur, had stayed clean his whole life. He was the only son in three generations of the Mitchells, the clear heir to Mitchell Group. The woman he ended up with didn't have to match their family status perfectly, but at least she should have a clean background and simple past.
A woman fresh out of a messy, very public marriage with a rich family... wasn't that a pretty big step down?
Arthur's dad stayed quiet even longer.
After thinking for a while, he finally spoke.
"Sophia... the girl's capable, no doubt. Making it at a place like Chase Group and getting results isn't easy. People say she's decent too. The divorce was the Chase family pushing too hard."
He paused and looked at his wife.
"If Arthur really likes her, it's not completely out of the question. At least her character and ability are solid."
Clearly, in his mind, Sophia's status as a twice-married woman was still a flaw that needed overlooking. But compared to the bombshell that their son might not even like women, it suddenly seemed manageable.
Arthur's mom felt even more unwilling when she heard that. She couldn't help muttering, "That's easy to say... but our Arthur has never even dated anyone. He's always been so clean. Sophia, though, she's already been married, and tied up with the Chase family in such a public mess... When people talk about it later, it'll always be..."
She didn't finish, but the meaning was obvious. She felt it was a loss, and unfair to her son.
Arthur's dad put down his teacup and glanced at her.
"You just said any girl would do, as long as she's alive and female. Now that we know she's a woman, you're starting to pick at other things?"
Arthur's mom went red then white from the jab. Annoyed, she turned her face away and stopped talking.
Yeah, she'd been so happy she almost cried earlier. As long as her son's sexuality was normal, everything else could be worked out.
But now an ex-wife option had popped up, and that hurdle in her mind wasn't something she could get over right away.
...
Nolan barely slept last night, and first thing in the morning he got dragged into meetings at the office.
By the time he was finally back in his office, his eyes were bloodshot and his chin was covered in stubble. He looked exhausted and defeated.
For days now, he'd been dealing with the same thing over and over—bad news flying at the company like snowflakes. Projects stalled, partners demanding payments, banks pulling loans, stock prices dropping... every single one gave him a headache.
On top of that, he still had to deal with the Martinez family's constant harassment whenever he had a spare moment!
That whole family acted like they couldn't function without him.
Vivian's case had solid evidence already, yet they were still bothering him, asking for help!
Stuck between outside pressure and internal mess, worn out, Nolan just wanted to die.
Right now, to distract himself and take a break, he was scrolling through his friends' updates.
Then he saw the post Arthur had just shared.
Nolan's pupils shrank. He stared at the photo again and again.
That cake box! That store! That style! He knew it way too well!
Wasn't that the signature strawberry cake from Sweetheart Bakery, Sophia's favorite?
Whenever she was in a good mood or wanted to treat herself, she'd always get one. He'd gone with her a few times and remembered her saying she liked how the cream wasn't too heavy and the strawberries were fresh.
So what was Arthur trying to say? Showing off that Sophia brought him cake?
Nolan exploded.
He couldn't hold it in anymore. Without thinking, he called Sophia.
The phone rang a few times before it was picked up.
"Hello? Who's this?"
"Sophia!" Nolan snapped right away.
"You deleted my number?!"
Sophia paused, then realized it was him.
"Why is it you? What do you want?" Her voice turned cold fast.
"What the hell do you mean?!" Nolan yelled into the phone.
"We just got divorced! Yesterday! We only divorced yesterday, and today you're already bringing Arthur cake?! You couldn't wait to find your next guy?! Are you that desperate for a man?!"
The other end went quiet for two seconds.
Then Sophia's ice-cold voice came through the speaker.
"Nolan, did a door hit your head or did a donkey kick you? We're divorced. What I do, who I give things to—it's none of your damn business! Who are you to question me? My ex-husband? Hah, you think you're worthy?"
She spoke fast, every word sharp.
"Even if the cake wasn't from me, so what if it was? I'm single. I'll give it to whoever I want. You have any say in it? Instead of barking like a mad dog here, why don't you deal with your company that's about to go bankrupt, or your precious true love who's sitting in jail waiting for a sentence! Stop disgusting me!"
She didn't give Nolan a chance to reply. With a click, she hung up.
Listening to the busy tone, Nolan froze in place.
Yeah. They were divorced.
What right did he have to question her? What gave him the right?
He slumped into his chair, the phone slipping from his hand onto the carpet.
On the other end, Sophia hung up, but the anger inside her wouldn't settle.
Nolan, that lunatic! Divorced and still trying to control her! Completely unreasonable!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. Staring at her phone and picturing his disgusting face, a rush of rage shot to her head. She raised her hand and threw the phone hard to vent.
The next second, a surprised "Ow!" came from the office doorway.
Sophia looked up and saw Arthur standing there, holding his forehead, staring at her in shock.
Clearly, he'd just seen her throw the phone and got startled.
Sophia's face went pale.
Did she really look that much like a raging tigress?!
