Chapter 58 Why Is It a Car Accident Again?
Sophia's face burned with embarrassment, wishing she could find a crack in the ground to crawl into.
"I-I'm so sorry, Mr. Mitchell!" Sophia quickly lowered her head, apologizing incoherently.
"I just... I was too impulsive. I shouldn't have gotten physical in your office. I-I just panicked for a moment, afraid Nolan might hurt you... I'll definitely be more careful about how I handle things next time! I'm sorry for the trouble!"
Oh God, what had she done?!
Beating up her ex-husband in her boss's office? This was basically career suicide!
Would Arthur think she was some kind of violent maniac? Would he think she couldn't separate personal from professional? That comment about being "talented in both civil and martial arts" must have been sarcastic, right?!
But then she saw Arthur raise an eyebrow slightly, his smile deepening.
"Apologize for what?"
"Huh?" Sophia froze.
"To have a secretary who can both... handle complex documents and 'handle unexpected situations' - I should consider myself lucky."
He leaned forward slightly, elbows on the desk, with a half-smile.
"Looks like I'll need to give you a raise, Ms. Taylor. If you keep developing such a well-rounded skill set, maybe one day if I need a bodyguard, I could pay you double - two jobs, one person. What do you think?"
Sophia's face turned bright red in an instant.
She couldn't tell at all whether Arthur was being serious or joking. She just felt a wave of heat wash over her entire body, her brain practically overheating.
"I-I... I'm going back to work!" She couldn't stay there any longer and practically fled.
Watching Sophia hop away like a rabbit, Arthur finally couldn't hold back and let out a low chuckle.
Sophia rushed back to her office in one breath, closed the door behind her, quickly tossed her "weapon" onto the desk, and covered her burning cheeks with both hands.
Ahhh! Sophia, what did you just do?!
She screamed silently in her mind.
You're really getting bold now - today you hit your ex in front of your boss, tomorrow are you going to hit your boss too?!!
Her phone on the desk suddenly vibrated, interrupting Sophia's wild thoughts.
She picked it up and saw it was Penelope.
"Hello, Penelope..." Sophia answered the call, her voice weak and feeble.
"Sophia! I found a crucial lead!" Penelope's excited voice came through the receiver.
"This could very well be the key to why that old witch from the Chase family and that little bitch Vivian suddenly made peace! But it's not convenient to talk over the phone - let's meet tonight and I'll tell you everything!"
Sophia perked up immediately, pushing aside her earlier embarrassment. "Great! Let's meet at your place. I actually have something to tell you too."
"Oh?" Penelope's voice immediately turned gossipy.
"What is it~ Is it about that... handsome and wealthy boss of yours?"
Sophia's face flushed red again, and she quickly denied it three times: "No! It's not! Don't make things up! It's about the divorce!"
She really just wanted to share about those two companies being denied loans, to see if they could take advantage of the PR crisis and strike while the iron was hot to make Nolan compromise.
How did it suddenly get twisted into this!
God knows just hearing Arthur's name now gave her goosebumps all over!
"Tsk tsk tsk, work stuff needs to be specially discussed with me? Sophia, you know when you lie, you talk really fast, right?" Penelope laughed mischievously on the other end. "Alright, alright, I'll stop teasing you. See you tonight, and remember to buy me coffee - I went through a lot of trouble to find this information!"
"I know! I won't forget!" Sophia replied irritably and quickly hung up.
...
Finally making it to the end of the workday, Sophia rushed out of the company right on time.
City A during rush hour was frustratingly congested.
The endless stream of cars stretched as far as the eye could see, red taillights forming a continuous line.
Sophia checked the time, feeling anxious, so she turned on her signal and took a side road that would help her avoid the congested main road.
This small road was flanked by old residential areas, with dim streetlights and few pedestrians.
Sophia slowed down, carefully watching ahead.
Suddenly, a figure burst out without warning from an even narrower alley, rushing straight toward the front of her car!
"Ah!" Sophia screamed and instinctively slammed on the brakes.
The car came to an abrupt stop. Sophia, still in shock with her heart pounding, slumped over the steering wheel, taking several deep breaths before raising her pale face to look ahead.
A thin, small girl, about fifteen or sixteen years old, was sitting on the ground, covering her face, seemingly terrified.
Sophia's heart sank. She quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed open the car door.
She wasn't sure if she had actually hit the person, but either way, she needed to check the situation first.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" Sophia rushed to the girl's side, crouched down, and asked anxiously.
"Ow... it hurts... it hurts so much..." The girl covered her face, curling up her body, rolling on the ground.
"My arm hurts... my leg hurts too... everything hurts..."
Sophia's heart immediately tightened.
Had she really hit her?
She didn't dare help her up, afraid of causing secondary injury, and quickly said, "Don't move, I'll call an ambulance right away! Just hang in there!"
Sophia hurriedly pulled out her phone from her pocket, preparing to dial emergency services.
However, the moment she looked down to unlock her phone, the girl who had been lying on the ground crying pitifully suddenly changed her expression and leaped up from the ground.
Sophia only saw a blur before a pungent smell hit her face.
Before she could even cry out, she passed out.
With a thud, Sophia's body collapsed softly to the ground.
Two burly men emerged from around the corner of the alley, efficiently lifting the unconscious Sophia and stuffing her into a nearby van.
The girl dusted off her hands, stood up, walked to the van, and grabbed the sleeve of one of the men who was about to get in.
"Where's the money?"
The man sneered, pulled out a thick stack of bills from his inside pocket, and casually tossed it to her.
"Not bad, kid. Good acting skills, and you really know how to work for money."
The girl caught the money, expertly licked her finger to count it, then stuffed it into her clothes with satisfaction. Without even glancing at the unconscious Sophia in the van, she turned and disappeared down another side street.
The van started silently and soon merged into the night.
Meanwhile, Arthur, still reviewing documents at the office, suddenly realized one was missing. Only then did he remember that Sophia had taken that document to use as a weapon and had taken it with her.
Arthur smiled helplessly and dialed Sophia's number.
But the call was rejected.
Arthur looked at the darkened screen and frowned.
