Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Christina looked at her. "You seemed pretty happy before you saw me. Did you think I was Elton? Can you guess why I'm here instead of Elton?"

Chloe didn't want to know.

But Christina clearly came here just to let her know about this.

"I heard Elton treats you well because you saved him? You have a boat-shaped birthmark on your waist."

Chloe looked at Christina without saying anything.

Christina smiled. "Yeah, what does this have to do with me, you ask? You don't know this, do you? Things are just this coincidental. Freya also has a boat-shaped birthmark on her waist."

Chloe's heart raced.

She didn't know that it was Freya who saved Elton back then.

She thought that girl was just passing by and wouldn't be someone close to her, so she took on that identity.

"What do you want to trade for this information?" Chloe didn't think Christina came to see her and brought this up just for fun.

Chloe sneered. Freya still didn't know that while she considered Christina a friend, Christina didn't feel the same way. Christina had been gone for three years and probably didn't even know Freya had feelings for Elton.

Either way, she had to grab this chance.

But Christina looked her up and down in disgust. "There's nothing about you that I want. What a shame."

Chloe was right—she just came to laugh at her.

Chloe wanted to destroy her, but she had just come to mock Chloe. Christina sighed, "I'm such a good person!"

Gabriel was waiting outside. Hearing her say this, he laughed, "Why didn't you let me go in? If I went in, she'd be even more upset."

Christina waved her hand. "You don't get it. If she could see you right now, regardless of why you came, she'd probably be pretty happy."

Seeing Chloe was just on the side. Christina actually came to see Mary.

But she didn't expect that Mary had already been bailed out by Austin.

It looked like Austin still had feelings for Mary.

Instead of coming to cause trouble for her, it would be better to seriously win Austin's heart. That would be much easier for Mary to do..

After all, Austin had no guard up against Mary.

She just didn't know if Mary could figure this out.

Not seeing her and unable to give her a heads up, Christina felt a bit disappointed.

After leaving, she took Gabriel to the cemetery.

The photo had been changed. Lillian in the photo was still young, looking the same as in her memories.

The area around the tombstone had been cleaned up, with flowers and some fruit placed in front.

The fruit and flowers were still fresh—clearly, someone had been here today.

"This is?" Gabriel was puzzled. What he was carrying was exactly the same as what was already placed in front of the tombstone.

Christina pressed her lips together and placed the flowers in front of the tombstone. "It was my dad."

He probably came to tell Lillian the good news about Christina's engagement.

"Mom, this is Gabriel. You haven't seen him in a long time, right? Bet you didn't expect this—he's my fiancé now. We're going to get married and have children, just like we used to talk about when we were little. Anyway, we'll be very happy. Mom, you take care in heaven too."

Gabriel also introduced himself, "Mrs. White, I'm Gabriel. I don't know if you still remember me after all these years. I've grown up now. I don't smoke or drink, I live a regular life and eat healthy, and I get checkups every year. I hope you'll watch over us from heaven."

On the way back, Gabriel got a call from Brian and needed to go back to the company.

Christina would be bored going home alone, so after dropping Gabriel off at the company, she decided to go to her own company too.

The White Group.

The White Group employees were a bit surprised that Christina came to the company today—the day after her engagement.

Christina really seemed to be treating the White Group as a serious career.

They felt relieved.

In the office, Christina listened to Marc's report.

She was somewhat surprised.

"Eight? Are you sure they're all people Chloe bought off or planted before?"

Marc was certain. "Clearly, Chloe's plans aren't as simple as they appear on the surface."

Christina was noncommittal. "Keep a close eye on Chloe's side, and Finnley too."

Marc was startled. "Do you suspect him too?"

It made sense to suspect Finnley—he was too good to Chloe.

Chloe was smart, but not smart enough to earn Finnley's appreciation, right?

In Christina's view, without some benefit involved, Finnley couldn't possibly like Chloe this much for no reason.

And if Chloe just wanted to steal Gabriel away, there was no need to plant people in the White Group.

Christina and Gabriel's engagement—Austin wasn't even qualified to attend.

He drank until his stomach hurt. Gregory felt bad for him and suggested he could dress up as a server to get in.

But that would be too embarrassing. He didn't want Christina to see him like that, so he refused.

Now, he was holding his laptop, playing the clips Gregory sent him of Christina and Gabriel's engagement over and over.

As if he was torturing himself, he kept dragging the progress bar back and forth around the part where Christina and Gabriel kissed happily.

Mary had been watching him sit motionless like this for six hours since he bailed her out.

She tried to get close to him, but he glared at her with red eyes. "Get lost!"

Mary's tears welled up in her eyes, about to fall.

This was the first time Austin had been this harsh with her.

She even saw hatred in his eyes.

Austin hated her?

Why?

Because of Christina?

Mary smiled bitterly, and the tears finally fell.

"Austin, are you yelling at me because of Christina?" Even though she could see it clearly, there was still a hint of disbelief in her voice. "Have you forgotten? You said it yourself—Christina was just my replacement!"

"You're not the same!" Austin's low voice came out, revealing a truth he'd been unwilling to admit. "You're different, you were different from the start. It was me—I transferred my feelings but couldn't completely let you go, so I used Christina's face, which only looked three parts like yours, to fool myself. I was blinded by my own thoughts. So when you finally came back after three years away, I was so happy that you finally came back. But Mary, she's not your replacement. I fell in love with her a long time ago."

"You fell in love with her?" Mary's legs went weak. "Then what about me?"

Soon, she pulled herself together again. "No, it can't be. You love me. So what if you love her—can you really let me go?"
