Chapter 273 CHAPTER 273

Chapter 273 CHAPTER 273
Two more months pass and the army has come to pick some students who can fight and we now train with them instead of in the Academy.

It wasn't hard for me to adjust, I've been watching them while Madam Vespera works on my magic and also, I trained with some of them sometimes.
She's not really a stickler for time.

But still, it was a bit of an adjustment, we were now training in regiments and squads, practising fighting on air and land as well as working on our defence and magic.

Still, I trained extra hard with Draco and Florian, as well as Madam Vespera.

Something about Draco's worsening attitude made me keep going, because I had a feeling he was the one who would be taken from me and the fates somehow think distancing us will make things easier for me.

They have all that power and this is what they chose to do with it.
I'm not going to sit and watch it happen.

I've stopped blowing up mountains, it wouldn't be the Kalutian Academy if I destroyed the mountains that protect it after all.

But every day, she has me seducing the power below, urging it forward.
Making it comfortable with me.

I can comfortably light candles and wild fires now, and I still deal with imposter syndrome.

Because barely a year ago, I was a struggling woman dealing with so much loss that I was drowning in depression.

Now fire and darkness cloud things and people at my command.

I'm flickering a lone flame on my fingers, moving it from one finger to the other when I heard a groan in my head.

"Val?" I call, actually out loud rather than in my head.

Fear is a strange thing.

She screeched louder and I set off, pushing soldiers and students aside as I ran out of the barracks training ground.

"Alira! Where are you going to?!" Commander Aegon demanded.

"My dragon!" Was the only explanation I offered and kept running faster.

But the distance was a bit too much so I called Zorath to come get me.

He arrived in less than a minute and he landed roughly on the ground.

I climbed up before I asked what was going on.

"She's about to lay her egg. She's in more pain than usual and her mate won't let anyone get close. Maybe he'll let you."

"What? And if he decides to chew me up instead?"

"Valyra will be the first to dig her claws into his eyes," he chuckled, "but I'm sure he won't hate it. He is probably confused at the same time."

"Okay, I'll be as well so just drop me then go grab Eruwan for me."

"If she won't mind flying on my claws."

"Zorath!"

His laughter echoed loudly in my head and soon, he dropped me off at the edge of her cage.

Aldi, Val's dragon mate growled at me as I walked closer, his eyes blinking slowly.

"Hi," I waved nervously, "I just wanna help."

His eyes followed me until I slipped inside, still looking over my shoulder, I found Valyra in a chicken position, her wings splayed on the ground.

"Is it usually this difficult?" I wondered out loud, touching her scales gently.

If I wasn't used to heat, her temperature would have burnt my hands.

She shook her head before lowering it on my shoulder.

It was heavy but I wasn't training with Principal Draco for nothing.

I rubbed her gently, encouraging her with sweet words while her male growled, pacing back and forth until Val screeched loudly again.

He stepped closer, but I shook my head, "She's fine, she'll get through it, okay? Don't make her tense."

He actually listened, to my shock and I looked down and noticed that the edge of the egg was already slipping out.

"Aldi, can you come?" I waved the black dragon over and I placed her head on his shoulder.

Then I went to the back and I knelt down.

"Zorath, where's Eruwan?" I asked, feeling completely out of depth.

"I spoke into her mind and she fainted."

"You crazy dragon."

I shook my head as he laughed but put my hands around the large egg and began prying it out of Val.

"Push, Val. Just give me one large push. Take a deep breath, then scream into it."

She dug her toes into the ground, took a deep breath, raised her head from Aldi and screamed.

The egg popped out into my hand and I fell backwards.

It was so big it was up to my chest.
And fat too, my hands couldn't go around it.

It was a blue colour, the scales reflecting off all the gems decorating the cave.

"You did it, Val," I whispered, "she's so beautiful."

I mustered enough strength to carry it gently to her and I dropped it in the middle of them both.

"She's too big," she replied, and began licking the shell. "You'll have to take it to the volcano."

I frowned, "I don't understand. Why?"

"That's where we're grown," she chuckled tiredly, "the fire will form everything else. Feed her power. Give her the wisdom of the old gods. But she won't stay as long as most dragons, she is bigger than I've ever seen any egg. The Dragon King wasn't this big."

My eyes widened, "Really?"

"Take her to the volcano, Alira. She'll fly out in six months."

I nodded and went towards the egg.

The moment I touched it, the egg flared.
A warm, bright light pulsed from inside, so strong it lit up the entire cave for a few seconds. The golden veins glowed brighter, and I felt something shift inside my chest — like the power that had been slowly waking up in me suddenly recognised something familiar.

Shaking off the odd feeling and did as Val had said.

She walked behind me as I logged the heavy egg forward, gently avoiding the gemstones in my path.
If this egg drops, I'll be headed to the other life or something.

When we reached the edge, Valyra whispered in my head, her eyes reflecting in the boiling volcano.

"You'll rise, chosen one."

I didn’t get the chance to answer.

She nudged me gently with her snout — not hard, but firm enough that I lost my balance.

"Val!" I screamed, but before I could get my bearings and demand a proper explanation for this rough play, she pushed both me and the egg forward.

Hard.

I fell off the ledge into the boiling lava and the heat swallowed me completely.
