Cold reaction
Alexia, I'm sorry to pry to your privacy with this question,” he said, still trying to get hold of himself.
“It's not what you think. I'm sure that there was a misunderstanding. I met Bruce in kindergarten school, but he forced himself on me,” Alexia said, trying so hard to convince him, but it was written all over his eyes that he had little faith in her words.
“Bruce has never acted like this before! I don't know what came over him,? She said, and bit her lips, feeling so frustrated.
Joan did not have it. He turned to the mirror in the right corner of the room, and gazed at her through the mirror. A soft humming escaped from his lips, “You don't need to explain all this, let's live as normal humans for Rita.” He said, nodding his head slowly.
He sighed, turned to the small table in the corner of the bed when his phone suddenly began to ring. He quickly checked who the caller was, hoping that it was his P.A, but to his greatest surprise- Sonita, by that time of the night, deep thought washed over his mind the moment Jr saw her name on his phone screen.
Why's Sonita calling me at this time? She made it clear she wouldn't call ever again,” he muttered, gazing at Alexia as if he was waiting for her to give him the go ahead to answer the call.
“She's your friend and relative…”
"Not anymore,” he corrected her, gave out a heavy sigh and then declined the call.
“Okay… And I think I need to give you some space to speak with her, do well to return her call,” Alexia said, holding the picture so tight.
Joan was not only devastated, but her heart throbbed for her. He had been waiting for the best time to open up to her, hoping that she'd see him in a bright future, but he guessed that he was wrong all this while. I changed my mood instantly, picked up my phone to dial her number.
“You are right…” I said, moving to the other side of the window shatter.
“Hello,” her voice fell into my ear, Alexia quietly left the room. I cleared my throat before responding.
“What do you want at this time of the night, Sonita?”
“I guess you received the package the last time we had a deal; to remove Alexia out of his life while pretending to love her,” she said, causing him to raise his brows. It was becoming a boring game for him as his feelings grew for Alexia, not wanting to hurt her in the end.
“Okay?”
“Is that why you called?”
There was heavy laughter from the phone, “I need to fast-forward the wedding, Joan. If you don't want your dirty secret to be out.”
“Especially to her,” She snarled.
“Sonita, we will talk later…” he said. The call ended. Joan was finally getting irritated and overwhelmed by her behavior. He bit my lips as I walked out of the room. The next door flew open, but there was none inside.
Suddenly, he could hear a little Mumur. He couldn't catch a single word, but he knew all was not well. He walked inside to see Alexia wrapped up on the side of the room.
“Alexia,...” He called, tapping her shoulders. She jumped off, causing her heart to beat rapidly as his hand touched her.
“Everything you saw was cooked by Sonita,” she said. Joan quickly moved in his direction to her out of curiosity, and their eyes fell on each other.
“Alexia, it's getting late. You need to sleep”. He raised his eyes, not wanting to hear any more words from her. Though he wanted to hear her explanation, but not anymore. She nodded slowly
The next day, Joan prepared so early to leave the house. Alexia walked downstairs to see him off to work, which was usual.
“Joan,” she called.
“I will be late today,” he said with a smile plastered on his face. She could feel the cold reaction from him, but she remained calm.
“Alright,” She said.
“Try and fill up the necessary documents for Rita, so she can begin her classes,” he said, walking out of the house.
“Hey, Mummy” Rita said while clutching her nightwear on her body.
"Are you both fighting, mum?, she said, her face filled with curiosity.
"What do you mean?, Alexia asked, her heart ached a bit.
"No, my dear.”
“Okay mummy,” She held her hands as they moved to the kitchen to have breakfast.
“Mum, are you two getting married?,” She asked again,
Alexia was shocked to hear those words from her, she always hid her affair with Joan away from her presence.
“Married? Who told you that,” Alexia asked , rasing her brows while stirring the flakes on the plates.
“Mummy, don't lie. Are you two getting married? Rhoda told me that he will be my new dad soon,” She repeated once more, leaving her dumbfounded.
“She said that we would both have two separate daddies,” she added.
“What do you mean?,” Alexia said, turning around.
Her eyes fell on her, she could not explain or answer all these bulk questions she is asking.
“Come here, my darling,” She moved the plate to the table in the kitchen.
“I'm getting married to Joan, but you both need only have a dad,” she paused the moment her eyes gazed at hers.
"What?,” She said in excitement.
“I don't want him to be my new Dad. I want Rhoda's new dad to be my dad,” she clutched her hands on her body.
"Rhoda will soon join us here, you will love him,” She assured her, putting a smile on her face.
“But I want you to promise me that this will be a secret between us. You won't tell Rhoda about it yet.” Alexia said, still smiling at her.
“Alright mummy. Will Rhoda come to the wedding?,” She asked again, her hands folded, not wanting to eat until her question was answered.
“Rita. You need to eat your food before it gets cold,” she said, trying to dodge the question.
“Yes, mummy.” She said sadly, and began to eat her food.
Alexia wondered what could be going on in the house with Rhoda; the lies, information those two must be feeding her in order to hate her. She quickly sighed heavily, while she watched Rita eat her meal.
