Chapter 99
Thinking back now, it was quite silly.
She was a bit surprised to hear Leonard's response. She didn't expect him to think the taste was fine; she thought all boys wouldn't like it.
The next day, near lunchtime, Margaret received a call from John. Because of what happened yesterday, Margaret was a bit nervous now, afraid that it might still be Layla on the other end.
The phone rang for a long time before Margaret finally pressed the answer button, and John's deep voice came through.
"Margaret, are you off work now?"
Margaret breathed a sigh of relief when she heard his voice. "I'm about to get off work."
John was silent for a moment after hearing this. "I already know about what happened yesterday. It was your aunt who called you back without telling me. I apologize for not noticing it in time and causing you to be wronged."
Margaret's eyes became a bit moist when she heard this. She thought she didn't care about this matter anymore, but hearing John's apology made her grievances uncontrollably surge up.
She sniffed. "John, you didn't know about this either. You don't need to apologize to me."
She never blamed John entirely for what Layla did. Although they were family, they were also individuals, and she could distinguish that.
John sighed deeply on the other end. He knew Margaret was very sensible and had never caused him much worry over the years. But the more she was like this, the more guilty he felt.
"Margaret, I'm really sorry. It's my luck to have raised you as your uncle for so many years."
If it weren't for the accident back then, he and Margaret wouldn't have had so many years of connection and bond. He wanted to take good care of Margaret, but it seemed that things didn't go as planned. The longer Margaret stayed at The Thorne Villa, the more grievances she suffered.
Margaret chuckled lightly at this.
"It's also my luck to have lived at The Thorne Villa for so many years. John, I didn't take this matter to heart."
She really wasn't a vengeful person. Even though Layla did those bad things to her, she never thought of revenge.
Over the years, she had indeed been eating and using The Thorne Family's resources. Layla wasn't wrong about that.
She learned the principle of repaying kindness in elementary school.
"John, don't worry about this anymore. I'll bring my husband back with me in a while, and we'll have a meal together."
John was a bit surprised to hear her call Leonard her husband.
But he also knew that if Margaret wasn't happy with Leonard, she wouldn't call him her husband voluntarily. This meant that this marriage was actually very happy for her.
As long as she could live happily in the future, John would be very relieved.
"Margaret, I'm really happy to see you start a family."
These words suddenly warmed Margaret's heart. She still remembered when her parents passed away, she was only in elementary school. If John hadn't taken her in, she wouldn't have grown up.
She still remembered how warm John's big, broad hands were when he held hers.
"John, if there's nothing else, I'll hang up now."
It was already time to get off work, so Margaret planned to go home. If she didn't leave in time, she might be late for work in the afternoon.
Just as she was about to hang up, John suddenly spoke again. "Wait, Margaret, I have one more thing to say."
Hearing this, Margaret paused, waiting for him to continue.
John seemed to have made a lot of mental preparations before speaking.
"Margaret, I know it's unfair to ask you to attend Stella's wedding, but I really have no other choice. The Fields Family is not someone we can afford to offend. If you don't go, I'm afraid the people from the Fields Family will cause trouble at the wedding. I have a lot of projects in cooperation with the Fields Family recently..."
Hearing this, Margaret already understood. John called her today to ask her to attend Stella's wedding.
"John, don't worry, I'll attend."
Although she said yesterday at The Thorne Villa that she would decide whether to go or not based on the situation, she was actually just trying to annoy Stella.
She knew that as a member of The Thorne Family, she should attend such an occasion. Besides, she had no other feelings for Howard now, so there was no reason not to go to the wedding.
John seemed a bit surprised that she agreed so readily.
"I'll bring my husband with me that day."
Hearing this, John was completely relieved. After reminding Margaret to take care of herself, he hung up the phone.
On the other side, Leonard had just finished a surgery and walked into his office to call Frank.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered, and before Leonard could speak, an annoyed voice came through.
"Leonard, can you text me before calling next time?"
Frank had been watching a movie with a girl he had been flirting with recently. Who knew the phone would suddenly ring? He forgot to put it on silent before the movie, so the phone was particularly loud in the theater.
He didn't need to go back to the theater to know that the girl must have a bad impression of him now.
He thought it was an emergency call, but it turned out to be from Leonard.
Now he vented all his anger on Leonard, who just listened quietly without rebutting.
After Frank finished venting, Leonard spoke softly. "I need you to look into the matters between Margaret, her uncle, Stella, and Layla."
Frank was a bit surprised to hear this. Although he had never met Margaret's family, he had heard some rumors.
It was said that Margaret didn't have a good life at The Thorne Villa, and her aunt and cousin were always prejudiced against her.
But now Leonard asking him to investigate this matter was a bit unexpected.
"Leonard, are you serious about Margaret?"
Leonard didn't answer this question. "Find out as soon as possible and let me know."
Frank couldn't help but roll his eyes on the other end of the phone, knowing Leonard wouldn't see it anyway.
"You really treat me like your assistant. You ask me to investigate so many things. Shouldn't you pay me a salary?"
Since Leonard married Margaret, it seemed like he had been doing assistant work, either investigating Howard or looking into The Thorne Family's past.
