Chapter 89
One sentence made Margaret pause her finger from pressing the hang-up button.
She knew that today was Layla's discharge day, and since John had already started grocery shopping, it wouldn't be good if she didn't go back. After all, she had just told John last time that she didn't mind the hospital matters and didn't blame Layla.
If she didn't go back today, John would definitely misunderstand.
No matter how much she disliked Layla and Stella, she didn't want John to feel uncomfortable being caught in the middle.
"I'll head over now."
Margaret finally compromised. After hanging up the phone, she looked at the driver and said, "Sir, please turn around."
The car started driving in the right direction again, and Margaret closed her eyes to rest, feeling a bit tired. The Thorne Villa wasn't far from here, so she arrived at The Thorne Villa ten minutes later.
After paying and getting out of the car, Margaret walked through the gate and pressed the doorbell. It didn't take long for someone to open the door for her. She looked up and saw that Stella and Howard were also there.
She was a bit surprised. Just now, when she left the mall, these two were still picking out wedding dresses. How did they arrive earlier than her?
But this thought only lasted a few seconds. She then remembered that she and Tenley had shopped for a while, so Stella probably came back earlier.
Margaret didn't greet Stella and Howard but sat on the sofa alone. After looking around, she realized that John was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's John?"
She came back today entirely for John's sake.
Layla sat next to her with a glass of water, "Your uncle went out to buy groceries. He'll be back soon."
Layla had said this to Margaret in the taxi, but for some reason, Margaret now found it less believable.
She even began to think that John had no idea Layla had called her back today.
Realizing something was off, she wanted to leave. She grabbed her bag from the sofa and said, "I think I should go. I just remembered I have something to do at home."
Layla had a hard time tricking her into coming back, so how could she let her leave now?
"You're already here. Do we have to invite you several times just to have a meal?"
These words were unpleasant, and Margaret's face darkened upon hearing them.
"The meal is almost ready. It's not too late to leave after eating. Your husband is working at the hospital and probably hasn't finished yet."
Although she wasn't sure about the previous statements, the last one was true.
Margaret had no choice but to sit back on the sofa. She took out her phone and opened the chat with Leonard, sending a message.
[I'm having dinner at The Thorne Villa today. I'm already at The Thorne Villa.]
After sending the message, she heard Layla say, "The necklace on your neck is quite beautiful. Where did you buy it?"
Margaret didn't expect her to ask about the necklace.
Because of Layla's question, Stella and Howard also looked at her neck.
They had to admit that her necklace was indeed beautiful. In fact, Stella had noticed it when she met Margaret at the mall today.
The mall's lighting made the necklace shine with colorful lights, making Stella very envious. However, she didn't want to lower herself to ask Margaret, so her mother asked for her.
"It's just an ordinary necklace."
Layla snorted at this, "This necklace was bought by your husband, right? It doesn't look cheap. I think I've seen it on TV before. When did your husband become so rich?"
Howard also became nervous upon hearing this and looked at Margaret.
Margaret knew that if she said the necklace was expensive, Layla and Stella wouldn't believe her. Besides, she had no intention of hiding it.
"This necklace is a high-quality imitation, not expensive, just over a thousand dollars."
Layla had been staring at her necklace, wanting to know its price. If it was expensive, she would be extremely jealous.
But now, hearing Margaret say it was fake, she couldn't help but laugh.
Stella also sneered beside her.
"Margaret, we're all adults here. There's no need to wear fake stuff. If you can't afford it, it's okay to buy something cheaper. Over a thousand dollars can already buy many branded necklaces. There's no need to always chase luxury."
Margaret looked at Stella, feeling puzzled. When did she say she was chasing luxury?
Wasn't this necklace just bought because it looked good? What did it have to do with luxury?
"What necklace I buy has nothing to do with you. But you're getting married. Have you chosen your wedding ring?"
This question made Stella's face darken because Howard didn't want to marry her in the first place, so he hadn't bought a wedding ring yet.
Although she had urged him many times, Howard always used work as an excuse, saying he didn't have time to look at rings.
Now, Margaret's question hit her sore spot, making her eyes fill with hatred.
"I just said, how could a doctor afford an expensive necklace? Some people just like to show off what they lack."
Layla's words reached Margaret's ears. Although it wasn't the first time she heard Layla belittle her husband, it still made her uncomfortable every time.
"I don't need him to buy me an expensive necklace, and I don't think his love for me can be measured by a necklace."
But no matter what Margaret said, Layla and Stella thought she was deceiving herself and putting on airs.
Who wouldn't care about these things?
If she really didn't care, wouldn't she marry a beggar?
But how many people in real life are willing to marry a beggar?
Everyone still looks for a match in social status. It's not something to be ashamed of, but Margaret seemed to uphold true love above all, looking down on the rules of matching social status, which made Stella very disdainful.
"Did I say anything wrong? He's just a poor doctor, earning so little every month. I really don't know how he'll support you in the future. This necklace cost him nearly half a month's salary. What will you eat after buying this necklace?"
