Chapter 90
Chapter 90
Layla's face was filled with such disdain that Margaret couldn't ignore it even if she tried.
She wanted to get up and leave again. Since the conversation was going nowhere, there was no need to stay.
Stella seemed to notice that she wanted to leave, so she gently placed her hand on Margaret's and spoke softly.
"Margaret, Howard and I have set our wedding date for next month. I hope you and your husband can come. This time, I'm sincerely inviting you."
Howard, sitting next to her, instantly darkened at these words. He glanced at Stella, clearly displeased.
He didn't want to invite anyone to this wedding, let alone Margaret. He wished Margaret didn't even know he was getting married.
But Margaret's expression didn't change at all as she looked at him.
"Really? Well, congratulations. If I'm free that day, I'll come."
She meant it. Given her poor relationship with Stella, if it was a workday, she naturally wouldn't be able to attend.
However, Stella misunderstood her words as being sad and upset that Howard was finally marrying her, which made her feel a bit better.
She looked at Margaret smugly and squeezed her hand. "Margaret, Howard and I will definitely be happy together. I really hope for your blessing. After all, we're family and have known each other for so many years."
Margaret found her words extremely ironic. If they were family, how could Stella have stolen her boyfriend and shamelessly called it true love?
But she didn't want to argue with Stella now. She pulled her hand away, stood up, and said, "I'm heading back. My husband is getting off work."
Layla scoffed at this and spoke up.
"Can't he come home by himself? You're not his servant; do you have to pick him up every day? Do you do all the housework and cooking while he does nothing?"
Layla's words were meant to belittle Margaret, making her realize she had married a useless man who depended on her for everything.
Before Margaret could respond, Layla continued, "If I remember correctly, you let him drive your Audi, right? Gas is pretty expensive now, and that car guzzles it. It would be better not to drive it. His hospital should provide transportation, which would save you some money, right?"
In Layla's eyes, Margaret and Leonard were living a very frugal life.
She had initially thought John had bought that Audi for Margaret, but later found out Margaret had paid for it herself. So, even if she wanted to take it back, she couldn't.
Knowing Leonard was the one driving it, Layla sarcastically suggested Margaret save some money.
Margaret opened her mouth to retort but realized arguing with these people was a waste of time. She swallowed her words.
Prejudice is a mountain that can't be moved.
"Since John isn't back yet, I'll leave. Let him know when he returns. I have things to do at home, so I won't stay for dinner."
Margaret said this and walked out of the living room. As she opened the door to leave, Stella glanced at Howard, who was about to follow her, and stood up first. "I'll go talk to Margaret."
Without waiting for Howard's reaction, she chased after Margaret and grabbed her arm at the door.
Her grip was strong, and Margaret winced in pain. "What are you doing?"
Margaret was angry and shook off Stella's hand, her eyes full of displeasure.
Now, only Stella and Margaret were outside, with no one else watching, so Stella dropped the act and smiled smugly.
"Margaret, are you angry now? Seeing that I'm marrying Howard, are you jealous?"
Margaret rolled her eyes, knowing that no matter what she said, Stella wouldn't listen. She chose to remain silent.
"Let me tell you, once Howard and I are married, things will be better. He likes you now because you married someone else, not because he truly likes you. Once we're married, he'll realize this and give up on you."
These words were meant for Margaret but sounded more like Stella was convincing herself.
Margaret looked at her calmly. "If you really think that, why are you here talking to me?"
It's said that if someone keeps flaunting their superiority, it means they're insecure. Margaret felt this was true for Stella.
"Are you crazy? I don't care about your business."
Margaret didn't even plan to attend their wedding after hearing about it, so why would she care?
"Don't pretend in front of me. I know you're acting like you don't care. Otherwise, why wouldn't you come to my wedding? You just don't want to see Howard and me happy together, right?"
Margaret was speechless. She had never met someone who couldn't understand plain words.
"You're insane."
She said this and was about to turn around when she saw Stella suddenly look at her with tearful eyes. "Margaret, if you're angry, I apologize. But please don't skip my wedding."
Before Margaret could react, Stella leaned to the side and fell into the nearby pond.
The Thorne Villa had a pond outside with some goldfish for decoration, cleaned daily.
The pond was deep enough to reach a person's shoulders. When Stella fell in, water splashed everywhere, some of it landing on Margaret.
Margaret stepped back, thinking Stella was crazy for throwing herself into the pond.
But before she could speak, someone suddenly pulled her back, and she saw Layla's angry face in front of her.
"Margaret, how could you be so cruel to push Stella into the pond?"
Margaret opened her mouth. "I didn't push her; she jumped in herself."
This made Layla's face even darker.
"Is she crazy? Jumping into the pond herself? Do you think I'll believe that? I knew you still held a grudge, but if you're angry, take it out on me. Why did you have to hurt Stella?"
