Chapter 65
Chapter 65
So even though Joseph was getting close to Elvira right under my nose, I pretended not to notice.
But the one thing I never expected was that Joseph would actually make a move on Elvira!
I rushed over and stood in front of Elvira, taking off my jacket and wrapping it around her.
After I interrupted him, Joseph took two steps back, crossed his arms, and looked at everything with a lazy expression.
The gentle, gentlemanly demeanor he usually showed in front of Elvira had completely disappeared, replaced by a cynical attitude. "Virio, it's been a long time."
"You should've saved that opening line for the day you came back."
What was the point of saying it to me now?
Joseph smiled. "What I mean is, it's been a while since we've had a scene like this. Do you remember? I did the same thing to your secretary right in front of you before."
Long-buried memories flooded into my mind.
Joseph stared at me meaningfully. "Virio, if you really like Elvira and want to protect her, you shouldn't have brought her home."
"You know exactly what I do to the women around you."
I knew he was testing my limits.
I wanted to say that Elvira meant nothing to me, but the moment I tried to speak, I found I couldn't get the words out.
Even though I'd lost my memory, subconsciously, I still wanted to protect Elvira.
Joseph suddenly seemed bored. "Whatever. Looking at you, you probably don't remember that woman. That poor secretary had a pretty rough time after you kicked her out of the company."
"Such a shame. If you hadn't stopped her from being with me back then, maybe I would've been gentle with her."
I clenched my fists. "There was nothing between that secretary and me. You just assumed we had something going on."
"Do you have to use such dirty tactics on every woman who appears around me?"
Joseph raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't call it dirty, Virio. We just have different approaches, that's all."
"But Ms. Lacey seems completely devoted to you. These past few days, when I've been around her, all she's shown me is disgust." With that, Joseph turned and left, not forgetting to raise his hand and wave at me.
It was a blatant provocation. I wanted to chase after him, but remembering Elvira was still in the chair, I calmed myself down and carried her back to her room.
Elvira didn't gradually wake up until evening.
When she opened her eyes and saw herself lying in my bed, she was startled. Her eyes searched around, and only when they met mine did she instantly relax.
In that moment, I could feel the deep attachment and love for me in Elvira's eyes.
It was an instinctive expression, definitely not an act.
Although I'd lost the memories of our love, I remembered everything else, including how to tell if someone was sincere.
At that moment, Elvira earned my trust.
I stared at her intently, and she seemed to remember that I had amnesia. She blinked and quickly looked away, asking what had just happened.
"Joseph. He drugged your drink. By the time I got there, he was about to rape you." Saying these words made me angry.
I guessed that maybe subconsciously, I cared deeply about Elvira and always wanted to protect her, which was why I felt so upset about this.
Elvira looked at me, momentarily speechless. After coming to her senses, she carefully checked her clothes, only to find she'd already been changed into pajamas.
Seeing the unease on Elvira's face, I told her, "Don't worry, I got there in time."
"Joseph didn't get a chance to do anything to you. I had the maid help you change." After we talked for a bit, Elvira's emotions gradually settled.
She asked me why I came to save her.
I licked my lips, suddenly feeling my throat go dry. "Just had a strange feeling."
"At that moment, I felt something was about to happen. We'd been eating together the past few days, but today you told me you had other plans. And when I came downstairs, I happened to hear some commotion from here." I explained the whole sequence of events to her, making sure I didn't miss any details.
Elvira stared at me seriously, her delicate face showing confusion and some emotions I couldn't quite read.
She opened her mouth, looking like she wanted to ask me something. I was ready to answer, but just then, a phone rang, interrupting the subtle atmosphere between us.
I sighed and told her, "You take that. I'll have someone prepare some nutritious food for you."
The doctor came to examine her. Although the drug Joseph had given her had worn off, it still had some side effects like dizziness and nausea. I was worried it might have some bad impact on her health.
All the way from Elvira's room, I kept thinking about everything that had happened today.
Something in my heart was aching. I recalled many scenes of Elvira and me together, but the feelings between us that everyone had told me about remained a complete blank in my mind.
I started wondering—was what they told me true? Or was it all just my imagination?
But Luca had no reason to lie to me, and I did remember that Elvira and I had a business relationship.
After giving instructions to the kitchen, I returned to my room.
An hour later, Elvira came to find me with some key information. "The insider at the Lacey family just called me. They found evidence of financial transactions between Joseph and Camorra."
Hearing this, all other thoughts vanished from my mind, replaced by anger. "He's actually working with them?"
And with Camorra, who'd been targeting us all along!
I knew Joseph's return couldn't be that simple, but I never imagined there was such a huge conspiracy behind it.
Elvira nodded. "Joseph's been in contact with Camorra since Massimo was locked up. We didn't find out before because Joseph wasn't being obvious about it, but these past few days, his behavior has gotten more reckless."
"I'm guessing it's because he got close to you. He thinks he can get information about me from you."
My words made Elvira nod. "That's what I think too."
She handed me the evidence, and then we fell into a long silence.
After a moment, she spoke. "I've given you the evidence, so I'll head back now."
When she reached the door, her figure showed some hesitation.
I wanted to say something, but could only shake my head. Finally, the door closed in front of me.
And I decided to go interrogate Joseph.
