Chapter 40 Through The Flames

Chapter 40 Through The Flames
Her clouded vision cleared only when he got really close to her. Her eyes took in the face of the only person who could make her heart beat faster and slower at the same time...

Don Quisito.

“Kate!!!” he called out in relief of finding her, before dropping to his knees and pulling her to his chest. There was an ocean of gratitude in the next words that he spoke.

“Thank god I found you...” Quisito rasped as he moved her back a bit so that he could see her. He removed the damp hairs that were stuck to her face and looked deeply into her emerald orbs, because he thought he would never get to see them again. He had managed to locate her by tracing Placebo’s phone, but wasn’t sure that he could get to her before something bad has happened to her.

He wanted to cover her with kisses and make her feel better, but she was in near fainting state and the whole building will come down in minutes. He had to get her out as soon as possible.

“Don’t be scared. I’ll save you” he promised.

Dousing the hungry flames that were about to touch her, he proceeded to untying her hands with his knife. He was about to cut the ropes that kept her legs together but that is when he spotted the wound that Placebo gave her. Over the loudspeaker phone, he had heard Placebo dropping some liquid at the same time she cried out.

His jaw clenched with inexplicable amount of anger when he recognized the torture technique of alcohol over fresh cut wound. He couldn’t believe that Placebo could be such a monster. Grinding his teeth together, he carefully cut off the rope around her legs, without saying anything.

Once Kate was free from the binds she struggled to stand up, only to fall back down. She winced when her wound stretched. Her legs were numb from staying in a stiff position for a long time, making it impossible for her to stand or walk.

“It’s okay...I’ve got you...” Quisito voiced with concern and lifted her up in his hands in bridal style.

Even though she wanted demand a lot of answers from him, she kept quiet and relaxed against his body because she did not have the energy to argue. Since Quisito acted quickly, they could get out before the room collapsed, her body curled up against his bullet proof vest.

They probably had a thousand steps to climb, if the stairs were even there. Based on the destruction caused by the intensity of the explosions, it was impossible to navigate their way and so Quisito constantly kept on asking for directions through a wire attached to his body.

He didn’t want to get caught in the cross fire when she was in his arms, so he assessed the information he received before making a turn. She listened to his Russian and Italian words, but understood barely anything. The truth was that she didn’t want to.

All she wanted to do was get back to her room, make herself comfortable under the covers of the fluffy bed and dream about Chris...

“Your father had a stroke” Quisito dropped the information on her like a bomb, as they passed over the burning debris.

“WHA- IS HE OKAY?” her worried shrilled voice asked, drilling through the sound of explosions.

“He will be okay, for now. His heart couldn’t take it when he saw a selfie sent by Placebo with you tied up in the background” the Don calmly explained as he continued to walk.

Kate remembered a series of selfies Placebo had taken after dragging her down to the room and tying her up. But never in a million years had she imagined that those would be sent to her father. She silently mourned for her poor father’s condition by closing her eyes.

That’s when she recalled what Quisito just said to her.

‘Your father will be okay....for now’

What was that supposed to mean?

She opened her mouth to ask him, but her words died in her mouth when he came to an abrupt stop, his hawk like vision fixated on something in the smoke cloud to their left.

Her eyes followed the path of his orbs, but couldn’t make out anything. A second later a man emerged with a gun pointed at them, making her heart drop to the pit of her stomach.
