39. Promises in prision

Lucca and I looked at each other alertly. The residents of that place had called the local police, and now the police wanted to arrest my husband. I shivered slightly, starting to realize that we were in trouble. I grabbed Lucca's hand tightly and shook my head frantically.

"No, please don't get off. Tell the coachman to drive the carriage faster, the human police won't be able to catch us." Lucca held my face with her free hand, gently caressing it.

"It's okay, baby. There's no need to worry so much, I'll explain to the police the reasons why I ended up attacking that disgusting man, and they'll release me. Don't be so afraid." He left a seal on my forehead and got out of the carriage. I also left feeling that my husband's words failed to calm me down this time. Three police officers were actually outside our carriage, and it could also be seen that several of the inhabitants of that citadel were nearby with their disapproving faces as they watched everything in anticipation of things going super wrong for the Moretti. "I am here." Lucca surrendered without fear as soon as he got out of the carriage. "That disgusting man insulted my wife, so if I had the chance, I would still kill him."

"If I told you, I wouldn't say that in front of the police." The police officer spoke, ordering my husband's arms to be held. A heavy handcuff was placed on his arms, uniting those limbs in front of his body. "Accompany us to the police station, don't make our work difficult." The police officers pointed the way as they held and half-dragged Lucca to the police station. I locked my arms around his elbow and didn't allow them to separate me from him. I was so scared, everything was my fault.

"Baby, stay strong; everything will be fine." He cooed at me, making me lean my head on his shoulder. The people of the city continued to throw curses and insults at us, calling Lucca the son of the devil and a demon, telling him to go to hell, and wishing he would never get out of jail again.

When we arrived at the police station, Lucca was locked in a room, and they just left him there. "Hey, are you just going to arrest me without me giving my statement first? Don't treat me like I'm a criminal!"

"You should have thought of that before you almost killed Mr. Gallet with punches. Our peaceful citadel does not tolerate violence, we are extremely strict in protecting our residents, and it is not because you are the son of the powerful Count Moretti that the police will be condescending." The officer spoke.

"But even so, I still have my rights, I demand that you let me see my lawyers!" Lucca demanded, slamming the cell bars in fury.

"The mail won't go through Morpeth until tomorrow, Thursday, at ten o'clock, so you won't be able to communicate with your lawyers until next week." He told us, much to our chagrin, that at that moment I hated this end of the world in which we were living a little more. "Now stay quiet in that cell and let us do our work in peace." The man turned and left, leaving the guard to close the cell where Lucca was forced to be.

"You'll want your wife to be locked up with you, Mr. Moretti." The prison guard spoke with a mocking laugh, already treating him as if he were a criminal. I wouldn't leave my husband's side for anything. The guard moved far enough away that he wouldn't be able to hear the words I said to Lucca, which were urgent in my speech.

"Husband, you are under arrest, and night is falling. We should have run away from the police. Now, what do we do?" My heart was tight because of so much apprehension. I remembered the morning of that same day when I feared that something might happen if Lucca went to Morpeth to accompany me on my afternoon of foolish shopping, and now that everything was really going wrong, Lucca would probably turn into a werewolf right in front of all these people, and then it would be there that he would become the true devil. Lucca was sighing, leaning his forehead against the cold bars of the cell, while I was still clinging to his arm.

"You have to go back to the haunted castle; you have to ask the creatures to watch Atwood; he is trapped in the castle's basement; tell Gorgoh and the goblins to help you watch him." I shook my head, finding what he was saying inconceivable.

"No, I can't go. I don't want to leave you alone here, please." I was so distressed.

"But you have to go; otherwise, something very serious could happen to those poor children." I looked at the cell's small window and noticed that night was already falling. "You have to go save those kids."

"But what about you? What if you transformed in front of all these wicked people? You could be in danger, too." He held both my hands and squeezed lightly, looking at me fixedly, his eyes were permanently yellow now.

"Please don't worry about me so much. Go save those kids first, and I'll be here waiting for you." We were looking at each other deeply, and he wiped away the tears that insisted on escaping from my eyes, so I kissed him as if it were one last time. It was so difficult to let go of his hands, I wanted to be with him so much, but he was right when he said that at that moment, the lives of those children were more important.

So I quickly left the police station with the intention of putting the haunted castle on alert for the Atwood werewolf.
