Hugo and I became close. I don’t know how that happened. He became more attentive to me. Also from the day, I saw him with Soleil; I have never seen Soleil again. We also didn’t go on the honeymoon we were supposed to because I requested to him we should just come home because I felt I couldn’t handle my pregnancy. The more emotional I am now, the more sensitive I become every morning. When we go for a check-up, the doctor said that it was normal, because some said that sensitivity was stronger, especially now in my case. However...
Wayne threw the papers on the floor as I sat in front of him. I didn’t see what those were. I stared at the floor while ignoring the whimpering and angry Wayne. I looked at the paper on the floor; to what he was upset about.
Suddenly he called me and ask me to come here. Just after we got home, he called me angrily. I thought there was just a problem, but his anger was making a fuss. I’m even more scared now that I can see it.
As I slowly picked up the photos and paper on the floor, I stopped and looked at him. I didn’t want to get mad because I didn’t want to harm my baby on my tummy, so I talked to him gently. “What is the problem and why are you like that? And please, lower your voice.”
He shot me with a sharp look. My question was not answered. His breaths were just heavy. His neck was crimson. “Look at the ones in the picture to find out the reason because you might have a worse reaction.” His words, I know, are sarcastic.
When I adjusted my seat, I looked at the photos in my hand. At first, I looked closely at it until I gradually saw and recognize the man’s back. When I looked at the others on the floor that were scattered, the man was slowly leaving the woman— from a woman I knew. I can’t be wrong because that’s the woman who supported me ... My sister …
I looked back and forth at the picture and him. He smiled at me, then his eyes started to get hateful again. “Now, do you know who the man you married is? The person you are so angry with is right in front of you. And now is your husband.”
“No.” Just like the air came out of my mouth. I feel weak. What I see is not true. If I was dreaming, they would wake me up. Hugo can’t do it, but my world seems to have collapsed to what Wayne said.
“Hugo is the primary suspect in what happened. I’m still trying to figure out why he was acquitted. I haven’t told you yet because I thought you were just pretending, but my plan was ruined because you got pregnant! How can we get revenge for the sake of your sister if that happened!” His voice echoed throughout the room. I stood up because I didn’t want to hear what he had to say. He called me but I went straight out. While walking, I was carrying a photo where I could see Hugo’s face better.
When I went home; there were no people. I just sat on the sofa as if I was in another space. I went to the kitchen to get water from the refrigerator when I saw the note.
“Adele, sir Hugo is sending us on vacation. Maybe we will be here for a week with ma’am Helena and sir Adelard. Enjoy your time with sir Hugo! ” —Esther
As I held the glass, my eyes widened at the beautifully arranged knife. I don’t know how many minutes I stared at it before realizing the sound of the car from outside. It was late when I got home, so maybe we were almost at the same time arrived when Hugo came home. When I put the glass in the sink, I took the knife and hid it behind me as I held it tightly. I greeted him and he entered the lobby just in time.
He approached me with a smile as he looked at me from head to toe. The lights were off, but fortunately, the moonlight was high. He still didn’t notice the knife behind me when he asked.
“Why did the light go out? Have you eaten? Are you hungry already? ” I didn’t answer his questions, not because he was asking too many questions, but because I was now taking a photo that was in the back of my pocket.
When I presented it to him, he was still wondering. Because maybe it was dark so he couldn’t see much, but when he took it in my hand, his eyes widened. I did not speak and remained silent. I take the courage to accept his answer, but based on his reaction, it seems like I already have the answer to hundreds of questions in my brain.
“Do you know the one in the picture?”
He didn’t say a word. There is a time I became completely weak. I force myself to believe that he can’t do what Wayne is accusing him of. Why does what he did to me seem more painful now than before? I thought I can fight for him until the end; I am wrong. You are the mess I need to fix.
“No. This is— ”
I never let him finish speaking because of his denial. I don’t have to hear anything more because I don’t deserve to live in a house covered in lies.
I stabbed the knife I was holding into his side stomach. He tried to grab me as he reached out to me, but I step back. I gripped the knife tightly as blood dripped from it. I just watched him sprawl there before I snap back to myself.
I let go of the knife and it rang on the floor as I looked at the man I loved lying on the floor.
