Chapter 229
Chapter 229
"Mommy..." Henry rushed toward the hospital bed, looking up at Christina with his little face, choking up, "Mommy, you're finally awake. I thought... I thought you'd never wake up again."
"How could that be?" Christina weakly sat up and stroked Henry's little head. "Henry's been so good, how could I bear not to wake up? From now on, I'll never leave Henry again."
Henry cried even harder, clutching Christina's arm tightly: "I was so scared. I don't want to lose Mommy again."
Christina pulled Henry into her arms, her heart filled with tenderness.
Having survived the ordeal, they held each other tight, expressing their care for one another.
Ethan stood to the side, quietly watching these two people he cherished most, his eyes full of warmth.
Vivian understood that Christina had just regained consciousness and had been through a lot, there must be a lot she and Ethan needed to talk through.
She stepped forward and coaxed Henry: "Henry, your uncle came too. How about I take you outside to find him?"
Henry still wanted to stay with his mom. Vivian leaned close to his ear and whispered: "Look at Daddy—he really misses Mommy too and has a lot to say to her. Henry, come with me to find your uncle and give Mommy and Daddy some private time, okay?"
Henry blinked, looked at Ethan, then at Christina, and nodded obediently: "Mommy, I'll go with Vivian to find Uncle Brice. Daddy, you better not bully her."
Christina and Ethan watched Vivian walk Henry out. The second the door clicked shut, their eyes met, and they both broke into a smile at the exact same moment.
Christina spoke first, her voice gentle: "Ethan, they said I was unconscious for three months, but it felt like a lifetime."
Ethan gazed at her face. His lips moved, but he couldn't speak right away. His eyes were slightly moist.
"Ethan..." Christina called his name softly and reached out to grab his sleeve.
Ethan tilted his head back slightly, holding back the tears in his eyes. He took her hand, stepped forward, and pulled her into a tight embrace as she sat on the hospital bed.
Christina felt warm liquid falling on her neck.
She hugged him back tightly. After going through life and death, all the past resentments had long since vanished.
Even though he had hurt her before, the moment she saw him willing to jump into the sea for her and Henry, all her hatred turned into heartache.
Leaning against him, she felt safer than ever before.
"Ethan, when you jumped into the sea that night, what were you thinking?" Christina asked softly. She couldn't believe someone would really give up their life for others.
"Christina..." Ethan's voice was hoarse. Recalling that night three months ago still filled him with lingering fear.
After a long while, he slowly said: "All these years, you've suffered so much because of me, and Henry suffered too. I owe you both too much. If my death could buy your and Henry's safety, I'd do it willingly."
He smiled slightly, with a hint of relief in his tone: "But God probably didn't want me to atone that way. He wants me to spend the rest of my life making it up to you and Henry."
Christina shut her eyes, wrapped her arms tight around his waist, pressed her cheek to his chest, and listened to the steady thump of his heart. A wave of warmth and calm washed over her.
The shadow of the kidnapping gradually faded, and life returned to normal.
Two months later, Christina's body was nearly back to normal. The incision from the transplant surgery had healed beautifully, and there was no sign of rejection.
The doctor said this was already a very successful case clinically. She just needed to rest at home and could return to normal work and life, only needing regular checkups.
Christina was unlucky, but also extremely fortunate.
She knew clearly that she was alive entirely thanks to Ethan.
On the day she was discharged, Christina returned to the house she had originally rented.
Ethan said the house at Garden Vista Estates wasn't suitable for long-term living—the depressing environment led to all their troubles after marriage. He had already arranged for another villa to be renovated, and once it was finished, he'd move her and Henry in.
Once she was safely awake, Ethan had thoughtfully set up a temporary place for her, a villa right near the hospital, so it would be easy for her to get to her appointments and checkups.
But after thinking it over, Christina decided to move back to her and Henry's original place.
Instead of wasting time getting used to a new place, she would rather stay somewhere she already knew. That way, it wouldn't interfere with her medical visits or disrupt Henry's school routine.
Ethan didn't object and even brought over Henry's little dog Snowball. But the little guy acted like he didn't recognize Ethan and would bark at him every time they met.
On the day Christina came home from the hospital, her brother Brice and Vivian and others specially held a party for her. Joseph even delayed his overseas business flight by a day.
Seeing her body recovered, everyone was genuinely happy for her, especially Joseph,Cathy was his eternal regret, but fortunately Christina was much luckier than Cathy.
To avoid affecting Christina's rest, everyone left around eight in the evening.
After Ethan finished getting Henry to sleep and came back to the living room, Christina had just stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in nothing but a towel.
He froze for a moment, then quickly recovered. He walked over and said: "Coming out without drying your hair—be careful you don't get sick."
His tone was reproachful but full of affection.
Ethan took a nearby dry towel, draped it over her head, and carefully helped her dry it.
When her hair was about half dry, he guided her over to sit at the vanity and went into the bathroom to grab the hairdryer.
"The weather's still cool. Even with heating in the house, it's easy to catch cold. Your body's still weak, you can't be careless." He nagged while turning on the hairdryer and gently drying her hair.
Christina had always cared about her looks. Even during treatment, she didn't shave off all her long hair, she just cut it short to shoulder length.
The treatment during that period had thinned her hair considerably, but fortunately, in the past few months, a lot of fine new hair had grown in. After drying, it looked somewhat fluffy.
Ethan carefully applied hair oil twice.
Lately, Ethan had picked up a lot of work again and had less time to look after her, but whenever he had a free moment, he still took care of every little thing.
"Christina, I have to go to Novaria on business next month." He said while combing her hair, looking at her in the vanity mirror.
Christina's gaze fell on Ethan in the mirror, slightly lost in thought.
"What's wrong?" Ethan's gentle voice sounded. Seeing her look over, he leaned down slightly, his warm breath against her ear. "Is my face really that good-looking?"
This phrase was too familiar. A glimmer of light flashed in Christina's distracted eyes.
She lowered her head and smiled softly, responding quietly: "Yes."
Ethan's arm circled her chest, pulling her gently into his embrace, gazing deeply at her: "You're tired today. Get some rest early."
Christina looked up. Ethan in the mirror had gentle eyes, just like every night they'd been together,so gentle it made her doubt whether that slight sense of distance in her heart was just her imagination.
"Don't you want to stay here and sleep together?" Ethan asked, tilting his head.
Christina was slightly surprised. Seeing this, Ethan wasn't angry, just said reluctantly: "I understand. I'll sleep in the guest room."
Christina regained her composure and calmly applied her skincare products.
After she finished her bedtime routine, Ethan stood up first and scooped her up from the vanity.
Christina naturally hooked her arms around his neck and said coquettishly, "I can walk by myself."
"I know," Ethan looked down at her, a slight smile on his lips. "But I want to hold you."
"You're being so good! Are you hiding something from me?" Christina stared into his eyes, joking.
"Am I?" Ethan laughed. "Holding my own wife is perfectly natural."
He placed her on the soft bed, leaned in close, his tone suggestive: "I don't just want to hold you, I also want to... fuck you."
