Chapter 92 92
ADELINE
Whispers. Angry and impatient.
The house was boring. Another reminder that I really needed to start working again, but Grayson wasn’t having it. Especially after the recent scare. Kris and Jay had dropped in from time to time and when I thought they would be the voice of reasoning and get him to understand why it would actually help me, they chose now to agree with their arch enemy, the little traitors.
“That’s what you want!” The whisper was so loud all I had to do was follow it. If I had to explain why I was so drawn to it, I really couldn’t, but that voice, it was way too familiar to ignore, especially with how important it was to get more evidence.
The more I questioned myself, the harder my hunch pushed me in the direction of the voice till I was walking down the hallway to the forgotten guest room, the one no one ever really used anymore. It should have been locked, no one was allowed in any of the rooms that were occupied.
The closer I got to the room, the faster my heart thumped in my chest, trying to burst free from the cage of bones. It didn’t help that every step I took on the tile covered floor decided it would rather echo than just shut the fuck off and let me be a nosey bored house person in peace.
The door was slightly ajar. It would take particular skill to get through that without pushing the door some. That, I did not possess in any way. I’d already made the uno reverse turn, ready to leave because I would rather keep my dignity intact and remain unaware than hear and risk being discovered before even hearing what I came to hear, or rather, who I came to hear.
“All I want is payment for the years I wasted with the bastard.” The volume had definitely increased since before the hallways.
Curiousity won, and I’m not even ashamed to say it was a split second decision, like yes, I’m not even the least bit ashamed about it. Fearful, yes, elated, definitely yes. Curious? It’s the very reason I placed one hand on the upper part of the door and the other on the bottom and tightened my grip with each effort I made towards being a silent detective without a badge.
The makeshift living room was big. Cobwebs were all over the place, adorning the walls like the end of year decorations at every corner.
“Look, I can’t do this forever, that wench even lives with him now, did you know that?!
I could hear her very clearly now, like she was right in front of me, yet she still hadn’t sensed that she was no longer a lot.
“There’s no way I’m leaving here without getting what I came here for!” Her voice dropped a few decibels, but it didn’t soften the blow of what she was implying.
“Not at all.”
“I’m not asking you to do anything, just…focus on getting his schedule, we would sort it from there.”
“Oh for heaven’s sake, nope. Focus on that and I would butter him up so he’s more willing to release the money when the time was right.”
At that, she scanned the inner room she was in, it was easy to peek from the makeshift area because there was hardly anything going on living room. I hid behind the door frame, my breath came out in pants.
Please don’t come out, please don’t come out now. I chanted in my head.
After the longest minute to exist, she turned back to the window still of the small room, a black device in her han- burners! She had freaking burners!
“I have to go now, we’d talk later.” She rushed like she was being chased out of the room at that very moment.
I didn’t need a prophet to tell me to get my ass out of the room entirely. With a spring in my step, I hurriedly slid through the narrow space I left opened between the doorframe and ran out like she had already seen me and was right on my tail.
In no time I made it out the hallway and into my room, panting and gasping for air.
I’m not sure what she was talking about exactly but I needed more answers, answers she would never give me even if I were to go on my knees in the midst of broken glasses. There was only one way to find out more and that meant risking my life because I wouldn’t put it past her to be that deranged, no, unhinged was more descriptive of Scarlett.
I couldn’t piece it all together, no matter what angle I tried to interpret what I had heard, it didn’t add up, something was always missing, like I’ve the way you’d feel when you’ve taken care of the every puzzle piece on the board and think you’re done and just have to insert the last piece only to discover, there is no last piece, the piece was gone.
I wasn’t completely blank though. Grayson thought Scarlett was here to take his net worth all on her own, well, he was in for a surprise then and I’d hate to be the one to break it to him, but who else? It’s not like Scarlett would snitch on herself.
She had sounded agitated though, maybe their partnership had gotten to a breaking point? Or maybe he or she was pulling out and that’s why she was pissed? Or was she the one pulling out?
It was way too many questions and it didn’t help that the only person th
at could truly answer them was Scarlett herself.
