Chapter 64 Is This Your Patent?
He didn't finish, but the implication of what he meant was perfectly understood.
A rich lady who married into wealth, especially a full-time housewife - could she really do good research? Coming to an event like this wasn't inappropriate per se, but what was the point?
Daisy knew what he was thinking. She'd faced this kind of doubt so many times over the past year. She nodded slightly in greeting and didn't bother explaining much.
"Professor Owen, this way please." A staff member came over to show them in.
Professor Owen walked inside with Daisy and found his seat.
Daisy sat beside him. Honestly, this was her first time at this kind of event, and she was somewhat nervous.
Especially since people were coming and going in the venue, and many knew Professor Owen. A steady stream of people came over to say hello.
However, each time someone approached, Professor Owen would introduce Daisy, saying "this is my student" and "she's working on a very interesting project."
Gradually, Daisy went from feeling awkward at first to becoming more composed, not as nervous as she'd been initially.
After the pleasantries, Professor Owen's keynote speech began.
Daisy sat in the audience, watching her teacher stand under the spotlight, speaking eloquently.
Those familiar theories, those familiar viewpoints - she'd learned them all in class back in the day.
When the speech ended, thunderous applause filled the room.
Then came the panel discussion.
Several experts sat on stage debating a topic. Professor Owen was among them. When it was his turn to speak, he suddenly looked at Daisy in the audience.
"Daisy, why don't you share your thoughts?"
Every eye in the room turned to Daisy.
Daisy froze for a moment. She hadn't expected her teacher to call on her at this moment. Her heart started pounding, and she nervously took the microphone.
It's okay, just pretend you're answering a question in class.
That's what she told herself.
At first, her voice was a bit shaky, but fortunately her thinking was clear, and in just a few sentences she explained a complex problem clearly.
As she continued, Daisy completely found her rhythm and began speaking eloquently about the issue.
The experts on stage exchanged glances. Some nodded slightly, others looked surprised.
"And this is...?" The moderator was also curious.
"My student." Professor Owen smiled. "She's currently researching nanorobots. Very innovative ideas. You should exchange contact information and discuss more later."
He was personally bringing Daisy back into the circle.
Daisy looked at her teacher gratefully, her eyes getting slightly warm.
Thinking back now, how could she have borne to leave such a wonderful teacher, abandon everything, and choose to marry Vincent?
When the panel discussion ended, there was an intermission.
Daisy stood in a corner drinking water when several young researchers came over and started chatting with her.
"Ms. Hart, your approach to nanorobots is really amazing!" A girl with a ponytail said, her eyes bright. "I'm definitely going to study it carefully when I get back!"
Daisy smiled. "You're too kind. Actually, this research is just getting started, there are still many shortcomings."
They were chatting happily when a discordant voice interrupted.
"I looked at that nanorobot patent, and the list of researchers doesn't seem to include anyone named Daisy, does it?"
Daisy turned around to see a flashily dressed woman approaching with a half-smile on her face.
She recognized this person - a researcher from Vincent's company named Lynn Davis, who was very close to Vanessa.
Daisy had quite an impression of her, because among the researchers on the patent stolen by Vanessa was this very Lynn!
Lynn's voice wasn't loud, but loud enough for the people around to hear.
The young researchers looked at each other, their expressions changing from warm to awkward.
Some glanced at Daisy, their eyes carrying some deeper meaning.
Daisy looked at Lynn and actually smiled.
Lynn didn't smile though. Her face turned red, looking somewhat angry from embarrassment.
"What are you smiling at? At industry summits like this, everyone presents their own research results. But you, you keep claiming other people's research as your own without any shame."
But who's the shameless one here?
Seeing Daisy speechless, Lynn continued: "Of course, what you said at the summit was quite brilliant, but speaking brilliantly doesn't mean the work is yours, right?"
Before Daisy could respond, the ponytailed girl couldn't help saying: "But many of the details Ms. Hart just mentioned match the patent documents..."
"That just shows she studied it thoroughly." Lynn interrupted her, staring at Daisy and saying loudly: "After all, you've been a housewife for six years. You may not have much else, but you have plenty of time."
"Studying other people's patents, memorizing data, then coming out to show off - that's pretty normal."
This was too direct. The young researchers' expressions became uncomfortable.
Daisy laughed despite her anger.
A plagiarist, instead of hiding in a corner, had jumped right in front of the original creator. This person's shamelessness truly surprised Daisy.
"Ms. Davis," Daisy said, "can you tell me about the development process of that patent?"
Lynn froze. "What?"
"The development process." Daisy repeated. "From project initiation to experiments, from encountering difficulties to solving them - can you tell me about it?"
Lynn's expression changed.
Daisy continued: "If you can't explain it, I can."
"From the initial concept source, to the first version of the experimental design, to the technical bottlenecks encountered in between, to the key breakthrough moments - would you like to hear it?"
Lynn opened her mouth, her face getting redder, and said hastily: "Is that necessary? What, are you trying to prove the patent is actually yours?"
"Anyone with any research experience could make that stuff up!"
She turned and walked away.
The people nearby all had subtle expressions.
Daisy thought this little episode was over, but near the end, Ethan came over looking furious.
"Those people are just too much!"
Seeing how angry he was, Daisy quickly asked: "What happened?"
"I was getting water over there, and I heard people saying you could come to this summit and get into Reed Corporation all because you... you..." Ethan couldn't say the rest, his face turning pale with anger.
"I don't know which bastard is spreading rumors!"
Daisy raised an eyebrow. "When did you hear this?"
"Just now." Ethan's chest was heaving. "I was afraid you'd overthink it if you heard, so I rushed to find you."
But Daisy smiled. "Then I can probably guess who it was."
In the lounge, Daisy recounted what had just happened. Ethan slammed the table, saying angrily: "That kind of person should be sued directly."
"Sue her for defamation, sue her for stealing research results - make her lose everything!"
