Chapter 65 She Has Truly Let Go
Cordelia's eyes flickered with confusion as she followed Alaric's gaze outside and spotted Dominic stepping out of his car.
She hesitated for a moment.
Feeling a tightness in his chest, Alaric, noticing her lack of reaction, let out a cold huff. His expression turned dark and unreadable as he walked away.
"Mr. Hughes."
Dominic greeted Alaric calmly as he saw him and Cordelia leaving the courthouse.
Alaric shot him a cold glance without responding and got into his car.
Soon, his car vanished from Cordelia's sight as it turned left.
Dominic walked up to the courthouse entrance, giving Cordelia a gentle smile.
"Congrats on getting your freedom back."
Cordelia gave a faint smile and asked, "Were you here for something?"
She and Alaric had come to finalize their divorce today, and besides her family, no one else knew about it.
Their marriage had been a secret, and now their divorce would be handled discreetly as well.
Dominic nodded. "Yeah, the Gray family set up some foundations years ago, and we're here to sort out some missing paperwork. Did you drive here? If not, I can give you a ride after I submit these documents."
Cordelia replied politely, "I drove myself. I need to head to the hospital. You go ahead. I'll catch up later."
She smiled slightly and walked out of the courthouse.
Dominic watched her drive away, his gaze deepening.
Cordelia had already completed her handover at the hospital, and today she was going there to say goodbye to her colleagues.
She had prepared some small gifts for her department colleagues. After working together for three years, she felt a bit reluctant to leave.
Sunrise Valley Hospital
Cordelia parked her car in the hospital garage and saw Hannah walking towards her.
As she was getting her things out, Hannah took them from her.
"In the early stages of pregnancy, you shouldn't be lifting heavy stuff. Let me help. Did you get the divorce decree?"
Cordelia nodded.
Hannah sighed lightly. "Mr. Hughes went to the courthouse with you himself?"
Cordelia nodded again.
Hannah clicked her tongue. "When you got married, he had a lawyer handle it. Now that you're getting divorced, he shows up in person. What's his deal?"
Cordelia couldn't understand him either.
After three years of marriage, she still knew little about Alaric.
"Whatever his deal is, it's not my concern anymore."
Their marriage was over. Meeting again, they were nothing more than familiar strangers without any connection.
Hannah nodded in agreement.
The two of them chatted as they walked towards the elevator.
Hannah shared a couple of funny stories from the department, making Cordelia smile.
When she smiled, her eyes curved into a beautiful shape.
From a distance, Alaric saw her smiling like that.
He took a deep breath, feeling that same tightness in his chest again.
The elevator doors opened.
Hannah and Cordelia entered the elevator, laughing and talking.
As they turned around, they saw Alaric walking towards them, his expression cold and unapproachable.
Cordelia saw him, her expression natural, and moved aside with Hannah.
Alaric didn't enter the elevator.
The doors closed.
Cordelia looked up, her gaze meeting his intense eyes just as the doors shut.
Her heart fluttered for a moment.
Three years of marriage, and now they were truly strangers.
Hannah glanced at Cordelia and noticed a hint of sadness in her eyes. She knew Cordelia still loved him.
After all, a love that had lasted for years left a mark not easily erased.
Noticing Hannah's look, Cordelia composed herself.
"I'm fine."
Hannah nodded.
The elevator reached their department floor, and Cordelia handed out gifts to her former colleagues, making sure everyone got one.
Even the patients received gifts.
Everyone's faces lit up with smiles as they received their gifts.
When Alaric stepped out of the elevator, he saw Cordelia surrounded by patients, all expressing their reluctance to see her go.
He watched her smiling face, his eyes darkening. Was she really that eager to celebrate being single again?
Delphine, who had also received a gift from Cordelia, placed it on the bedside table just as Alaric walked in.
"Alaric, isn't the company busy these days?"
Alaric had been visiting her frequently, which seemed unusual to Delphine.
She had been hospitalized before, but Alaric had never visited this often, almost daily now.
Alaric glanced at the gift box on the table and paused for a while.
Seeing him staring at the box, Delphine smiled. "That's a gift from Dr. Stone. She's leaving the hospital and going to Astoria for further studies, so she prepared gifts for her colleagues and patients."
"Didn't you get one?"
Delphine asked with a smile.
Alaric paused and shook his head. "No."
Should he have received one?
He wasn't a patient or a doctor here.
Delphine looked a bit disappointed. "It seems she's really moved on."
Cordelia's intense feelings for Alaric had made Delphine think she could never let him go.
Since Alaric had no interest in Cordelia, it was good that she could move on from this relationship.
Alaric frowned, his expression darkening.
Delphine noticed his distracted look and pointed to a chair. "Sit down. You look like you have a lot on your mind."
Alaric composed himself and smiled slightly. "It's nothing."
Delphine observed him quietly for a few moments. "You're a lot like your mother. You can't hide anything from me. I heard you're planning to divorce your wife soon? I haven't even met her yet. When will you bring her by for me to meet?"
Alaric looked down. "You've met her."
Delphine raised an eyebrow, puzzled. "When?"
Just as Alaric was about to answer, there was a knock on the door. Janet entered, holding a small gift box identical to the one on Delphine's table.
"Dr. Stone is handing out gifts today. I almost thought she was getting married."
Janet smiled, seemingly making an offhand comment, but her eyes couldn't help but glance at Alaric.
Sure enough, Alaric's expression turned colder, and he stood up from his chair.
"Mrs. Jennings, I need to get back to the office."
Delphine had noticed Alaric avoiding Janet lately and nodded. "Alright. Work is important."
Alaric nodded. "I'll visit you again soon."
Janet bit her lip as she saw him leave.
The moment she entered, he left. His intention to avoid her was clear.
