Chapter 49 Even If You Admit Fault, This Marriage Must End
Alaric's eyes darkened as he shot a cold, sharp look at Cordelia.
Without hesitation, she walked straight out.
Robert stood off to the side, his heart pounding, worried that Alaric might take out his anger on him.
Luckily, Alaric just watched Cordelia's retreating figure with a heavy gaze before looking away.
His expression darkened briefly, then returned to his usual icy demeanor.
"The agreement in my office drawer, take it to her."
His voice was flat and cold as he gave the order to Robert.
Robert was momentarily stunned but quickly nodded. "Sure thing."
Janet looked puzzled. In the past, she might have dared to ask what the agreement was about.
But now, seeing Alaric's grim expression and clear displeasure, she didn't dare to make a sound. She couldn't figure out what kind of agreement Cordelia and Alaric had reached.
Janet was also wary of Cordelia. If Alaric divorced his wife, given Ruth's fondness for Cordelia, she feared Cordelia might become Alaric's next wife.
Janet had endured so much humiliation recently just to be with Alaric. She couldn't bear to fail now. She was willing to set aside her past dignity and everything else to keep Alaric by her side.
Alaric walked out of the Hughes Group and got into his car.
When Janet tried to get in, Alaric's car had already started.
The window rolled down, revealing his handsome, ice-cold face. "I don't have time to visit Allan today. You go by yourself."
Allan Jennings was Aurora's teacher, now quite elderly. Janet knew Alaric visited Allan every year on this day, so she had waited in his office to go with him. But he didn't give her a chance to respond and drove off.
Janet stood there, feeling a chill run through her, her mood sinking to the bottom. She stood motionless for a long time, then clenched her hands tightly, biting her lip.
That evening.
Cordelia received the divorce papers delivered by Robert.
Alaric hadn't signed them yet.
Cordelia glanced over the terms and quickly signed her name.
"Why hasn't he signed?"
After signing, she put away the pen and couldn't help but ask.
Robert's expression was awkward.
Barry had given the agreement to Alaric three days ago. They didn't know why he hadn't signed it yet. But they couldn't tell Cordelia that Alaric might not want the divorce.
"Barry rushed the agreement after work, and Mr. Hughes left the office early this afternoon, so he didn't sign it."
Robert made up an excuse.
Cordelia thought of Alaric leaving the Hughes Group with Janet that afternoon, her eyes dimming slightly.
Robert respectfully gathered the agreement. "Mrs. Hughes, Ms. Stone, I'll be going now. Sorry for the disturbance."
Evelyn, sitting to the side, coldly remarked, "Mr. Hughes might not want the divorce, right?"
Robert, hearing this, glanced at Evelyn, wanting to say something.
Evelyn scoffed. "Robert, do me a favor and ask Mr. Hughes if he's fallen in love with Cordelia? If he admits his mistake and stays away from Janet, maybe this marriage can be saved."
Cordelia frowned and quickly cut Evelyn off. "No."
"Even if he admits his mistake, I still want the divorce."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow but didn't say more, her eyes glinting with a hint of cunning.
Robert's expression was complicated, unsure how to relay this to Alaric. He quickly left.
At Crown Hill Estates.
Robert handed the signed divorce papers to Alaric.
Alaric sat on the large sofa, holding the papers, his gaze cold as he stared at Cordelia's signature.
"Did she say anything?"
Robert hesitated. "Yeah, a bit."
Alaric frowned. "What did she say?"
Robert recounted Evelyn's words.
Alaric's brows furrowed, his face showing clear displeasure.
Robert took a step back and added, "Mrs. Hughes is firm about the divorce. She said even if you admit your mistake, the divorce must happen."
As soon as he finished, Alaric's sharp gaze shot over.
Robert immediately lowered his head further.
"She's in quite a hurry."
Robert mumbled, "Seems like it."
Alaric's face remained cold.
Suppressing his anger, he quickly signed his name at the end of the agreement and handed it to Robert.
"Take it."
Robert quickly took it.
"Mr. Hughes, don't you want to keep a copy?"
Alaric's face stayed cold and unyielding.
Robert forced a smile and took both copies, planning to manage Alaric's copy for him temporarily.
"Mr. Hughes, I'll be going now."
He spoke softly, and seeing Alaric still seated on the sofa without reacting, he left.
Outside Crown Hill Estates.
Robert had just stepped out when he saw Janet sitting on the steps.
He paused, intending to ignore her.
But Janet called out to him.
"Robert."
Robert forced a professional smile. "Ms. Martin, what a coincidence. What are you doing here?"
Janet glanced at the document bag in Robert's hand and asked softly, "Robert, is that the agreement Dr. Stone asked Alaric to give her?"
Robert's demeanor turned formal. "Ms. Martin, I'm sorry, but that's confidential. I can't disclose it."
Janet bit her lip, silent for a few seconds, about to speak when Robert quickly found an excuse to leave.
The next day.
Evelyn drove Cordelia to work at the hospital.
Passing by Crown Hill Estates, they saw Alaric coming out.
Janet was standing on the steps, seemingly waiting for him.
Cordelia saw this and clenched her hand by her side, then released it.
Evelyn also saw Janet and Alaric, her eyes darkening as she sped up.
Outside Crown Hill Estates.
Alaric walked down the steps, seeing Janet, his face turned cold.
"What are you doing here?"
Janet bit her lip. "Alaric, I waited here for you all night."
Last night, she had called Alaric, but he didn't answer. She felt a huge sense of crisis. She thought if she didn't take action now, she might fade out of his life. So she waited all night, setting aside all her dignity.
"Alaric."
Alaric's expression remained indifferent. He fixed his cold gaze on her pale, haggard face.
"This is pointless."
Janet stiffened, looking at Alaric with a dazed, pale face.
