Chapter 149 The Immoral Guilt
When Cordelia and Hannah arrived, Amber and Donald were already in the private room.
Donald had ordered some snacks for Amber, then handed the menu to Hannah.
"Hannah, you order."
Hannah politely declined, her gaze falling on Amber with obvious delight.
In the end, Cordelia ordered the dishes, and also ordered a bowl of chicken soup for Alaric, going to the kitchen to give the chef a few instructions.
At the table, Amber and Hannah hit it off, the two first-time acquaintances chatting very happily.
Hannah couldn't help but sigh, "How can you skip over men and still get such an adorable daughter?"
Cordelia smiled slightly, "Sperm bank."
Hannah couldn't help but laugh softly, thinking back to when she had advised Cordelia to give up this child to keep her job, she felt she really deserved to die.
Such an adorable daughter was hard not to love.
After eating, the group returned to the hospital.
Hannah's patient needed her for something, so she left first.
Cordelia and Donald walked along the path holding Amber's hands.
Donald was very concerned about Alaric's condition.
"Cordelia, tell me honestly, is Alaric's situation very serious?"
After all, a young person being hospitalized every few days was really worrying.
Cordelia looked at Donald's anxious expression and smiled helplessly.
"Not exactly serious, but I can't say there's nothing wrong either."
Alaric's illness had accumulated over these three years after all. Quick recovery was probably impossible, and he still needed long-term care.
But he had too many social engagements and couldn't control himself from drinking, so this illness would definitely keep recurring.
Hearing this, Donald breathed a sigh of relief, glanced in Amber's direction, and said lightly, "Good that it's not serious."
Cordelia understood Donald's meaning and said softly.
"Dad, don't worry. His condition isn't serious enough to be making final arrangements."
"So can we just not mention Amber's background?"
Donald nodded, "Okay."
Getting Donald's response, Cordelia finally relaxed a bit.
Donald probably felt guilty because Alaric was already sick and they were still hiding Amber's background from him.
Not to mention that Alaric's condition wasn't that serious yet.
Given Janet's character, she couldn't possibly risk revealing Amber's situation.
After all, although Janet's body seemed fine, she hadn't properly recovered after her surgery, so getting pregnant would still be difficult.
Cordelia didn't dare gamble on Alaric's character with Amber.
Amber had been to the VIP ward once before. After getting off the elevator, Amber headed straight for Alaric's room.
Cordelia was carrying the chicken soup for Alaric, so she quickened her pace.
When Amber reached the door of the ward, she didn't immediately go in, but first poked her little head into the room. After seeing that the person inside was Alaric, she showed a bright smile.
"Mr. Hughes."
Robert rushed to the hospital after finishing his work.
He had brought food for Alaric, but Alaric directly had him give the food to elderly patients in other rooms.
Robert was puzzled by Alaric's behavior.
Now, seeing the cute little girl poking her head into the room with a bright smile, Robert finally understood what Alaric meant.
Such an adorable child was hard not to love.
He carefully glanced at Alaric's expression, and saw that Alaric, who had been stone-faced just moments ago, had a much softer expression after seeing Amber.
Although he didn't respond to Amber's words, his gaze followed Amber the whole time.
Amber ran to Alaric's bedside, examining the IV needle on the back of his hand with concern, her little face scrunching up as if just looking at the needle made it hurt.
"Mr. Hughes, another needle needle."
As she spoke, she gently blew on the back of his hand.
Alaric looked at her adorable appearance and couldn't help but raise his hand to gently rub her head, the affection in his eyes impossible to hide.
When Cordelia walked into the room, she saw Alaric's hand on Amber's head.
His face was full of tenderness, and his deep eyes revealed a sense of "fatherly love."
Cordelia pressed her lips together, brought the chicken soup over, and pushed the meal tray to Alaric's bedside.
"Your stomach can only handle liquids right now. Eat something first."
Her voice was flat. After placing the spoon in the bowl, she stepped aside.
Donald also walked in from outside the room.
Alaric, who had been lying casually just moments ago, immediately adjusted his sitting position.
"Mr. Stone."
His voice was polite.
Donald nodded, glanced at the chicken soup on the meal tray, and said softly, "Cordelia specially asked the restaurant kitchen to prepare this. I don't know if it suits your taste."
Before even tasting the chicken soup, Alaric responded.
"I'm sure it will."
Hearing this, Cordelia glanced at Alaric indifferently.
But Alaric's attention wasn't on Cordelia; he was politely chatting with Donald.
"Drink the chicken soup first. It'll get cold in a bit. We can chat later."
Seeing that Alaric hadn't moved, Donald reminded him.
Only then did Amber notice that Alaric's other hand was bruised and purple.
Her round eyes were full of concern, "Mr. Hughes hurts."
Hearing this, Donald nodded and rubbed Amber's head, "Yes, Alaric isn't feeling well right now, so Amber shouldn't be too noisy, okay?"
Amber obediently nodded, then tugged at Cordelia.
"Mommy, feed Mr. Hughes."
Cordelia froze for a moment.
Seeing that Cordelia didn't move, Amber tugged at her again.
"Mr. Hughes hurts."
Amber's hand had been pinched by something before, but not that seriously.
Cordelia was very afraid of pain as a child, so Amber was also particularly afraid of pain like her.
Now seeing Alaric's hand bruised and purple, Amber naturally thought Alaric was in pain.
Seeing Amber so insistent, Cordelia smiled awkwardly and was about to tell Amber that Alaric didn't need it when Alaric, lying in bed, spoke in a low voice.
"It does hurt a bit. Amber really cares about me."
"Then I'll trouble Cordelia."
Cordelia looked up at Alaric.
Alaric's expression was calm, his deep eyes not meeting Cordelia's but looking at Amber instead, his gentle gaze seeming to overflow with tenderness.
At this moment, Amber looked up at Cordelia again.
"Mommy."
This time she spoke with a bit of a wheedling tone, those big round eyes looking at Cordelia, putting Cordelia in a position where refusing her would feel immoral.
