Chapter 98 He Wants to Remarry Cordelia
Seeing Cordelia's silence, Evelyn knew she had hit the truth.
She glanced at the watch on the table, her eyes darkening slightly, and said softly, "You and Dad can go to Astoria without worry. I'll hold down the fort here at home."
She promised that Janet and Alaric would never be together.
The next morning.
Evelyn postponed Luminary Ventures Group's morning meeting to take Cordelia and Donald to the airport.
After all, Allegra had worked for the Stone family for over ten years, and being all alone, she naturally went to Astoria with Cordelia and Donald.
At the Luminary Ventures Group.
Alaric rarely attended Luminary Ventures Group meetings.
It was only because after seeing Cordelia at Luminary Ventures Group last time, he kept having this feeling that Evelyn might very well bring Cordelia to Luminary Ventures Group.
When he entered the conference room, he saw Taylor sitting in Evelyn's seat.
Evelyn had always taken Luminary Ventures Group very seriously.
After all, the Stone Group's successful transformation owed much to Luminary Ventures Group's efforts.
After taking his seat, he glanced at Taylor.
"Where's Ms. Stone?"
Taylor was looking down at some documents. Hearing Alaric's question, he answered politely.
"Ms. Stone went to the airport."
Alaric frowned upon hearing this.
"The airport? Is she going on a business trip?"
Taylor answered respectfully and softly, "No."
Alaric's expression darkened. He seemed to remember something and suddenly stood up from his chair.
Robert had just received news that Cordelia and Donald were taking an early morning flight to Astoria. He was about to enter the conference room to tell Alaric when he saw Alaric had already walked out. Robert quickly said,
"Mr. Hughes, just got word that Cordelia and Donald left for Astoria early this morning."
Alaric strode quickly into the elevator.
Robert hurried to follow, calling the driver to have the car brought to the entrance of Luminary Ventures Group.
Seeing Alaric and Robert leave together, Taylor took out his phone and sent Evelyn a message.
[Mr. Hughes has left.]
Evelyn was chatting with Cordelia when her phone screen lit up. She glanced down at the message and put away her phone.
The flight to Astoria was already preparing for boarding.
Evelyn stood up from her seat and straightened Cordelia's shirt collar.
"Remember to call me when you get to Astoria. If you and Dad run into any problems in Astoria, remember to call me."
Cordelia nodded seriously.
At this moment, Evelyn had put away her usual serious and aloof manner, becoming incredibly gentle.
Cordelia and Evelyn hugged. Evelyn reached out and stroked Cordelia's hair.
"Take good care of yourself and Dad."
Cordelia nodded, her eyes reddening.
Since childhood, she and Evelyn had hardly been apart for more than a month.
This time going to Astoria, completing her studies would take at least three years.
Although Evelyn would occasionally visit them in Astoria, having to leave the land where she grew up, Cordelia's feelings were complicated.
Dominic had already handled all the procedures for them.
Last night, after learning that Cordelia and Donald had changed their flight, Dominic immediately changed his flight time too.
Fortunately, he made it.
"Evelyn, don't worry. I'll take good care of Cordelia and Mr. Stone in Astoria. If anything goes wrong, hold me responsible."
Hearing Dominic's promise, Evelyn smiled slightly, "Then I'll trouble you."
Dominic looked at Cordelia, his tone gentle, "It's what I should do."
After releasing Cordelia, Evelyn hugged Donald briefly, then watched them leave.
Cordelia turned to wave goodbye to Evelyn and stumbled slightly.
Seeing this, Dominic quickly reached out to steady Cordelia.
When Alaric arrived at the airport, he saw from afar the scene of Dominic holding Cordelia. His eyes darkened and he quickened his pace.
But Cordelia and Dominic slipped past the boarding gate.
Robert even shouted loudly.
"Ms. Stone, wait!"
Cordelia was talking with Dominic, and the bustling airport environment drowned out Robert's voice.
Hearing this, Evelyn's eyes flashed with mockery. She turned to Alaric rushing over.
Alaric watched Cordelia's figure disappear from view, his heart sinking heavily.
Seeing him about to walk over, Evelyn reached out to stop him, "Mr. Hughes, you and Cordelia are already divorced, and the initial proposal for divorce came from you."
Alaric's expression darkened.
Evelyn glanced at him and took out a men's watch, holding it in front of Alaric.
Alaric looked at his watch, his expression freezing.
This watch was one he had deliberately left at The Stone Manor some time ago. At that time, he and Cordelia were already divorced, and he had no excuse to see Cordelia, so he deliberately left the watch to create an excuse.
He stared at the watch without reaching out to take it.
Evelyn glanced at Robert and stuffed the watch into Robert's hand.
"Since Mr. Hughes can't let go of Ms. Martin, why bother pestering my sister?"
"Mr. Hughes, from the moment Cordelia decided to sign the divorce papers, you lost your chance. Dominic has already broken off his engagement for Cordelia. If you go up there now, you'll only embarrass both families and subject Cordelia to gossip. Why bother?"
Hearing Evelyn's words, Alaric's expression changed dramatically.
Evelyn looked at his grave expression, withdrew her gaze, and walked past him.
Alaric stood there for a long time without speaking.
Robert stood quietly beside him. Seeing Alaric's silence, he asked softly.
"Mr. Hughes, should I arrange a plane for you to Astoria?"
Alaric frowned slightly, then finally shook his head and grabbed the watch from Robert's hand.
"No need."
After saying this, he turned and left, his handsome face returning to its usual cold sternness, as if the person who had rushed from Luminary Ventures Group to the airport wasn't him at all.
Robert sighed and quietly followed.
The Hughes Manor.
Ruth had just returned from church.
She had gone to the church to rest for a while. As soon as she entered The Hughes Manor, Clifford said to her in a low voice.
"Mrs. Hughes, Cordelia has already left for Astoria ahead of schedule, on an early morning flight today."
"Evelyn asked me to let you know."
Upon hearing this, Ruth's expression darkened.
"Why did they leave early? Wasn't it supposed to be tomorrow?"
Because she knew Cordelia and Donald were leaving tomorrow, Ruth had returned from church.
Clifford lowered his head, hesitating to speak.
Seeing this, Ruth said with a stern face, "Speak plainly."
Clifford took a breath and said quietly, "Evelyn said that originally Cordelia was very hesitant about going to Astoria. But last night when she went for a checkup, she accidentally ran into Mr. Hughes taking Ms. Martin to the hospital."
"So that night when Cordelia returned to The Stone Manor, she proposed leaving early this morning."
Ruth listened, and a sudden shadow crossed her eyes.
"Get the car ready to go to Sunrise Valley Hospital."
Clifford nodded and immediately had the driver bring the car to the courtyard.
Sunrise Valley Hospital.
Janet lay in the hospital bed, her forehead wrapped in gauze.
Vivian sat by her bedside, looking indignant. "This Amy is simply sick."
"This matter has nothing to do with you, yet she insists on blaming everything on you."
"Janet, don't sign any settlement agreement. Let her go to jail!"
Janet didn't answer Vivian's words. Her mind was full of the image of Alaric leaving last night.
Alaric said their connection had already ended three years ago when she proposed breaking up.
The next time they met, they would be strangers.
He hoped Janet wouldn't appear before him again and disturb his current life.
He wanted to remarry Cordelia.
