Chapter 85 Wanting to Win Back Cordelia, a Bit Difficult
Cordelia noticed his state and furrowed her brows slightly. She averted her gaze and sat back down, her expression unreadable.
Janet finished watching the video and stood still, her eyes cautiously drifting towards Evelyn.
Evelyn's gaze was cold as she looked at her.
"Janet, you don't seem shocked by this video. Did you already know something?"
Janet bit her lip, unsure of what Evelyn was implying. She hesitated, wondering if she should tell Evelyn about the hospital incidents in front of Alaric.
During her hospital stay, Alaric had used the excuse of visiting her to see Cordelia. They had been sneaking around behind Evelyn's back for a while.
After some deliberation, Janet decided to keep quiet. She still wanted to leave a good impression on Alaric.
"No. I don't know anything."
She answered softly, glancing at Alaric. His deep eyes were fixed on the tablet, as if he was lost in thought.
Janet's expression froze.
Cordelia noticed Alaric's gaze as well and darkened her expression slightly, taking back the tablet.
"The journalist who released this video is Amy. Ms. Martin, you're friends with her, aren't you?"
Janet nodded calmly. "Yeah, we're friends, but she rarely talks about work with me."
"Ms. Cordelia Stone, do you think I told Amy to expose you and Alaric?"
Cordelia looked up at her, her expression indifferent.
Janet's heart tightened. "Ms. Cordelia Stone, if I wanted to do that, I would've exposed you and Alaric a long time ago when we were in the hospital."
"This has nothing to do with me."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, seizing on the key point. "The hospital?"
Janet's face paled, and she glanced at Alaric, immediately falling silent.
Evelyn's inquisitive eyes turned to Alaric.
What happened at the hospital? She was curious.
Cordelia didn't react immediately.
The hospital? What happened there?
She looked at Janet, puzzled.
Janet avoided further discussion about the hospital and turned to Evelyn.
"Ms. Stone, this has nothing to do with me. If you don't believe me, I can call Amy right now."
Janet, eager to prove her innocence, took out her phone and dialed Amy.
Evelyn didn't stop her and leaned back in her seat.
The Stone Group's lawyers were already preparing to sue Amy.
The Hughes Group wasn't idle either.
So Janet's call wouldn't affect them at all.
Evelyn just wanted to put Janet in her place, to show her that her so-called first love was nothing special in Alaric's eyes.
Amy, still basking in the thought of her upcoming promotion, answered Janet's call without hesitation.
"Janet."
Janet took a deep breath and put the call on speaker. "Amy, why didn't you tell me you recorded a video of Ms. Stone and Alaric? This will bring a lot of negative attention to him."
Amy paused for a few seconds before speaking seriously. "I knew you'd try to stop me, so I didn't tell you."
"Janet, I thought Mr. Hughes still love you, but after seeing this, do you still want to protect him?"
Janet's eyes reddened, and a tear slipped down her cheek.
Evelyn watched Janet's reaction, her eyes filled with disdain.
Janet bit her lip and continued speaking to Amy.
"But you shouldn't release everything just for attention."
Amy clearly didn't want to continue the conversation and quickly found an excuse to end the call.
Janet sighed in relief. Thankfully, Amy hadn't said much, and she had distanced herself from the situation.
She clutched her phone tightly and looked at Alaric.
"Alaric, I'll talk to Amy and get the video taken down."
Alaric's gaze was indifferent. "No need."
The damage was done; deleting the video wouldn't change anything.
Janet was taken aback.
Evelyn smiled and looked at Alaric.
"Mr. Hughes probably wanted this to come out."
Evelyn had already learned from Taylor that the Hughes Group had been working behind the scenes to amplify the story, making it go viral.
The Hughes Group was already preparing to clarify the situation by revealing Cordelia and Alaric's secret marriage.
Janet listened to Evelyn's words, her expression blank.
Betrayed by her husband and sister, Evelyn should be more upset.
She frowned and looked at Cordelia.
Cordelia pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed, showing no guilt for betraying Evelyn.
Cordelia noticed Janet's gaze and her eyes turned cold.
If they didn't clarify the situation, both she and Evelyn would be hounded by the public.
The Stone Group would be affected too.
And the Hughes Group.
So their three-year marriage had stayed hidden, but within a month of their divorce, it was exposed.
She glanced at Alaric, her eyes filled with blame.
Alaric looked at her and smiled.
At that moment, Robert walked in, holding a tablet, and handed it to Alaric.
Alaric looked down and saw the Hughes Group's prepared statement. He reviewed it carefully and then pressed send.
"The Hughes Group has issued a clarification."
Evelyn nodded. "The Stone Group is ready too."
Janet's expression changed slightly, and she tightened her grip on her phone.
She wanted to know how the Hughes Group and the Stone family had worded their statements.
She took a deep breath, controlling her emotions, resisting the urge to check her phone.
Cordelia stood up, her demeanor polite. "Thank you, Mr. Hughes."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Heading home? I'll have the driver take you."
Cordelia nodded. "Okay."
Upon hearing this, Alaric stood up and looked at Cordelia.
"I'll take you."
Cordelia frowned and refused. "No need."
She quickened her pace and left.
Alaric watched her leave, frowning.
Since that kiss, Cordelia seemed even more distant.
Evelyn, enjoying the show, teased and smiled. "Mr. Hughes, winning Cordelia back might be a bit difficult."
Alaric's eyes darkened.
Difficult?
He had never encountered a challenge he couldn't overcome.
