Chapter 50 So Quick to Stand Up for Your Girlfriend?
She stood there, frail and visibly shaken, staring at Alaric with a look of utter disbelief.
Alaric walked past her without a hint of emotion on his face.
Janet reached out and grabbed Alaric's arm.
"Alaric, do I still have a chance?"
Alaric's eyes were cold as he looked at her. "You were the one who ended things, saying I couldn't support your dreams."
"And now you're asking if you have a chance, implying that I can support your dreams again?"
"What is your dream?"
Janet's face turned pale, and she shook her head in denial. "Alaric, no, those were words I didn't mean. I haven't forgotten you for the past three years. I've been pushing myself, just to keep pace with you."
Alaric looked at her intensely, tearing away her facade without mercy.
"All you want is to marry into money and sit pretty as a trophy wife, right?"
Janet's body trembled, and she had to hold onto the railing to steady herself.
"Alaric, how can you think of me like that?"
Alaric removed her hand from his arm and walked away.
Janet stood there, stunned, watching Alaric's figure fade into the distance. A sense of panic and fear swirled in her heart.
At the hospital.
Cordelia stepped out of the car and watched it all with cold detachment.
She went to the locker room, changed into her work clothes, and headed to her office, where she saw Robert in a suit from a distance.
"Mrs. Hughes."
He greeted Cordelia politely.
Cordelia nodded lightly and took the file folder from Robert's hand.
"Did he sign it?"
Robert nodded. "Yes."
Cordelia looked satisfied. "Good, thank you."
She took the file folder and went into her office.
Robert, seeing the lack of any reluctance on her beautiful face, thought about Alaric's unwilling expression when he signed the papers last night. He couldn't help but find this couple's thoughts hard to fathom.
Just a month ago, they were adamant about not getting a divorce. Now, one of them had suddenly changed their mind.
And the one who had insisted on the divorce seemed unwilling to go through with it now.
Robert sighed and turned to leave.
Cordelia had no surgeries scheduled and had almost completed the handover of her patients.
She was assigned to the outpatient clinic.
After putting the divorce papers in her locker, she headed to the outpatient office.
After seeing a few patients, she clicked on the next patient's name and saw "Janet" on the screen.
She frowned slightly.
Soon, Janet walked in.
She looked pale and had a fragile, sickly appearance.
Cordelia took a deep breath, steadied her emotions, and faced Janet professionally.
"What seems to be the problem?"
Janet sat across from Cordelia, biting her lip, looking pitiful.
"Dr. Stone, can you help me arrange a meeting with Alaric's wife?"
Cordelia frowned.
"Ms. Martin, if you're not here for medical reasons, please don't interrupt my work. There are many patients waiting."
Janet's eyes reddened when Cordelia refused her request.
"Dr. Stone, please have pity on me and help me arrange a meeting with Alaric's wife. I have a lot to say to her."
Cordelia's expression turned cold. She took out her phone from the drawer.
Janet thought Cordelia was going to help her and looked grateful. She had been trying to find out Alaric's wife's identity, but the information she could get was very limited. She realized the gap between herself and that circle.
"Thank you, Dr. Stone."
Cordelia's expression remained indifferent. "Don't thank me. I'll ask Mrs. Hughes to help you." She pretended to dial Ruth's number.
Janet's expression changed, and she grabbed Cordelia's hand. Ruth's voice quickly came through the phone.
"Cordelia."
Janet shook her head nervously, mouthing the words, "Please, don't."
Cordelia shook off Janet's hand and controlled her tone. "Grandma, it's nothing. I accidentally dialed your number. I'm at work now. I'll come see you after work."
Ruth didn't doubt Cordelia's words and reminded her not to overwork herself before ending the call.
Janet's face turned even paler.
Cordelia looked at the door. "Ms. Martin, if there's nothing else, please don't delay my work."
Janet bit her lip, reluctantly got up, and left. At the door, she turned back to look at Cordelia. Cordelia's eyes were on the computer screen, but her gaze had turned cold because of Janet's presence.
Janet suddenly felt that Cordelia and Alaric's "wife" looked somewhat similar. Thinking about Cordelia's previous distant attitude and the subtle hostility towards Alaric, a bold guess formed in her mind. She hurriedly left. Alaric's "wife" must be related to Cordelia. Their facial features were just too similar.
After finishing her outpatient work, Cordelia returned to her department in the afternoon. She got a cup of water from the break room and walked out, only to run into Alaric coming out of the elevator. She frowned immediately.
Did Janet get scared at her clinic this morning and then run to complain to Alaric? She took a deep breath, sensing that Alaric was here to confront her.
"Mr. Hughes, you sure are quick to defend your girlfriend. Couldn't wait to come and stand up for her?"
Alaric's deep eyes glanced at her with a hint of mockery and disdain. He had no intention of responding to her.
Cordelia was taken aback. Soon, Robert came running out of the elevator, carrying a gift box. "Mr. Hughes."
Alaric took the gift box from him and walked towards the VIP ward, clearly there to visit a patient.
Robert saw Cordelia standing nearby and greeted her.
But since Cordelia and Alaric had signed the divorce papers, Robert changed his address for her.
"Dr. Stone."
Cordelia watched Alaric walk into the ward and felt a pang of discomfort. "Are you here to visit a patient?"
Robert nodded and responded politely. "Mrs. Aurora Hughes' teacher's wife is hospitalized, so Mr. Hughes came to visit."
Cordelia was taken aback. She hadn't been handling much work lately and didn't know about it. He hadn't come to confront her, and Janet hadn't complained to him.
Thinking about Alaric's disdainful look earlier, she felt a pang of heartache. She had overthought it.
