Chapter 37 Is This Mr. Hughes' First Love? It's Just So-So
Saskia couldn't read Alaric's emotions, staring at him curiously for a few seconds.
"Mr. Hughes, aren't you going to bring Mrs. Hughes back?"
Alaric's eyes stayed cold. "Didn't she say she'd just be there for a few days?"
Saskia sighed, looking worried. "Mr. Hughes, you and Mrs. Hughes have been fighting a lot lately. If she stays at Ms. Stone's for a while, cools down, and decides not to come back, wouldn't that bother you?"
Alaric paused. After a moment, he picked up the cigarette pack on the table, pulled one out, and lit it, looking down.
"No, it wouldn't."
He replied flatly, his face emotionless.
Saskia stood next to him, temporarily speechless.
Alaric, cigarette in mouth, got up from the sofa, grabbed his coat, and walked out of the living room.
Saskia watched him leave, feeling helpless.
After he left, the phone at Hughes Manor rang.
Ruth called to check on Alaric and Cordelia.
Saskia hesitated, unsure how to respond.
Ruth picked up on Saskia's hesitation. "Forget it, let them be."
She said heavily and hung up.
The next day.
Cordelia woke up.
She hadn't slept well, waking up several times during the night.
Each time she woke, she checked her phone to see if Alaric had called or messaged her.
But there was nothing.
She hadn't gone home for the night, and he didn't seem to care where she was.
Cordelia felt a wave of defeat.
Three years of marriage down the drain for this pathetic result.
She rubbed her temples, trying to push away her negative thoughts, tidied up quickly, and walked out of the bedroom.
In the kitchen, Evelyn was frying eggs.
Cordelia stepped forward to help.
But the smell of oil made her stomach churn, and she couldn't help but gag.
Evelyn heard the noise, turned around, and saw Cordelia leaning against the wall, gagging uncomfortably.
She stopped what she was doing and quickly turned off the stove.
"What's wrong?"
She walked over, rubbed Cordelia's back, her eyes serious, and handed Cordelia a glass of water.
Cordelia felt better after drinking the water.
She sat down at the dining table, seeing Evelyn's sharp eyes on her, not knowing how to explain.
She bit her lip lightly and looked down.
Evelyn stared at her for a while, then looked away without asking further. She went back to the kitchen, turned off the stove, and brought out a bowl of oatmeal, placing it in front of Cordelia.
"Eat up. I'll take you to the hospital later."
Cordelia nodded, sipping the oatmeal slowly.
"Have you talked to Alaric about the divorce?"
Cordelia shook her head. "Not yet, but I plan to draft a divorce agreement and take it to him."
Evelyn nodded. "Good."
No lawyer dared to go against Alaric.
But drafting a divorce agreement was simple.
Evelyn had initially planned to have Alaric give up some property, but the situation had changed.
Evelyn's straightforward response made Cordelia suddenly feel uncertain.
"Evelyn, if I divorce Alaric, what happens to the company?"
Evelyn set down her spoon, speaking slowly.
"There won't be any impact. The company's initial transformation is complete, and most of the remaining properties have been sold. The debt issues have been resolved."
Though it couldn't return to its peak, it wouldn't face bankruptcy.
Cordelia didn't fully understand company operations, but hearing Evelyn's words, she felt relieved.
"So, if you want to divorce Alaric, go ahead."
Evelyn said, pausing with a cunning smile. She wanted to see Alaric regret.
With Evelyn's support, Cordelia nodded seriously. Without any worries, there was no need to hold onto her marriage with Alaric.
After breakfast, Evelyn took Cordelia to the hospital, accompanying her to her office before leaving.
"The workload in your department is too heavy. For your health, you should consider changing jobs or taking a break."
Cordelia nodded thoughtfully. "I've been thinking about it."
Evelyn responded, "Call me if you need anything. I'm heading to the company."
Cordelia watched Evelyn enter the elevator, then returned to her office to start work.
The elevator reached the first floor, and Evelyn walked out, immediately seeing a familiar face.
Janet, looking exhausted, entered the hospital, heading toward the elevator.
As she looked up, Janet saw a stunning, cold beauty with an aggressive appearance. Wherever she passed, it seemed to lose color, making it hard not to focus on her.
Janet felt her features were somewhat familiar, and she couldn't help but take a second look.
Evelyn stopped beside Janet, speaking gently. "Ms. Martin?"
Janet paused. "Who are you?"
Evelyn unabashedly looked Janet up and down, smiling without reaching her eyes.
"You don't know me, but I've seen you in photos. The famous Alaric's first girlfriend. Didn't expect to meet you in person today."
Janet's face turned pale, looking even more haggard.
Evelyn said no more, walking past her with a detached demeanor, as if saying, "So what?"
Janet stiffened. Though Evelyn hadn't said anything harsh, she felt an unprecedented sense of humiliation.
Hannah saw Evelyn talking to Janet and paused. She was a longtime friend of Cordelia and knew Evelyn's protective nature.
She didn't know what Evelyn said to Janet, but it was clear Janet had lost the brief encounter.
Seeing Janet's dejected look, Hannah wanted to snap a photo to share with Cordelia.
Janet stood frozen for a while before snapping back to reality, turning to search for Evelyn's figure but couldn't find her.
She gritted her teeth, her hands clenched tightly at her sides.
The elevator doors opened.
Hannah glanced at Janet. "Ms. Martin, are you going up?"
Janet nodded forcefully. "Yes!"
Hannah moved aside for her.
Janet quickly stepped into the elevator, heading straight for Cordelia's department. Her steps were hurried, ignoring the pain in her body, eager to get answers from Cordelia.
