Chapter 219 The Daughter-in-Law She Wants
The Butler family held the wedding at their own estate.
Almost all families with business ties to the Butler family were on the guest list.
In Ravenshollow, the Butler family was considered quite prominent.
This time, it was the Butler family's second son getting married.
His background wasn't exactly honorable—he was an illegitimate child.
Only after his mother passed away did Floyd Butler allow him through the Butler family's doors and back into the family.
To make matters worse, his personality was rather troublesome and his conduct questionable, so over the years, most of the Butler Group's major business had been handled by Floyd's eldest son.
Years ago, Floyd had given his second son, Micah Butler, a billion dollars to invest.
He invested in several influencer companies, all barely staying afloat.
The woman he was marrying this time was also a small-time influencer.
How could a family like theirs possibly allow a small-time influencer to marry in?
A while back, the bride Marlowe had publicly announced her engagement to Micah online, even posting her pregnancy test results. She and Micah had always portrayed themselves online as a loving couple.
Once she played the victim card, her fans went crazy and started attacking the Butler Group.
Even the news about the Butler Group's new product launch was flooded with comments criticizing Floyd for his outdated thinking, saying the Butler Group's new products were probably feudal relics.
This was an era of freedom in marriage and relationships—arranged marriages were long out of fashion.
Although Marlowe's fans were just making small waves, over time it would impact the Butler Group.
Floyd eventually had no choice but to give in.
Cordelia sat in the car, quietly listening to Evelyn discuss these matters, a hint of confusion in her eyes.
Evelyn rarely talked to her about such topics, so if she was bringing it up, she must have her reasons.
For families like theirs, matching social status was the most important thing.
Cordelia also believed in matching social status.
After all, people who grew up in completely different environments had different lifestyles, family backgrounds, and social circles.
A marriage needed more than just the couple's feelings to survive.
If a girl married into a family beneath her own, she might be drained of all her value. Marrying into a higher-status family might mean better material conditions, but in a family business like the Butler Group, without the in-laws' approval, life in the Butler family would likely mean being overly cautious and submissive.
"I heard you've been spending a lot of time with one of Dominic's friends, Herschel."
While Cordelia was thinking, Evelyn mentioned this casually.
When Bruce heard Evelyn mention Herschel, he immediately perked up his ears, afraid of missing any important details.
Cordelia froze for a few seconds, then realized Evelyn probably misunderstood her relationship with Herschel.
"Herschel and I are just ordinary friends. I understand what's at stake."
Evelyn nodded slightly. "Good that you understand."
Bruce, who was driving, breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Cordelia's answer.
A sigh of relief for Alaric.
Bruce drove the car to The Butler Estate.
The Butler family's servants immediately came forward to open the car door.
Evelyn stepped out first.
Floyd's wife, Nicole Butler, saw her and walked over with a smile on her face.
"Ms. Stone, please come in."
Evelyn nodded slightly and reached out to help Cordelia.
Cordelia placed her hand in Evelyn's palm and bent down to exit the car.
Nicole's eyes lit up when she saw Cordelia, and she curiously asked Evelyn, "Who is this?"
Cordelia rarely appeared at formal occasions related to the Stone Group, so many families with business ties to the Stone Group didn't know she existed.
"This is my sister." Evelyn introduced her with a smile.
Nicole paused for a few seconds and asked, "Your biological sister?"
Evelyn nodded, then quietly introduced Cordelia.
"This is Mrs. Butler."
Cordelia smiled slightly and slowly extended her hand. "Mrs. Butler, hello, I'm Cordelia."
Nicole quickly reached out to shake Cordelia's hand, her eyes barely leaving Cordelia.
She had previously wanted to set up Evelyn with her son, but gave up that idea when she learned Evelyn was dating Bruce.
Now seeing that Evelyn had a sister, and one who was well-mannered and gracious, it was hard not to have other ideas.
"Hello, Ms. Stone, please come in."
Nicole shook Cordelia's hand and didn't want to let go, naturally holding onto Cordelia's hand and leading them into the estate.
Seeing Nicole's enthusiasm toward Cordelia, Bruce immediately thought of her biological son, Eric Butler, who was still single.
Judging by how warmly Nicole was treating Cordelia, she probably had ideas.
Although Bruce had never met Eric, he'd heard about his reputation.
The reason the Butler family stood firm in the murky waters of Ravenshollow was because of Eric's presence.
Calling him a rising star in the business world wouldn't be an exaggeration.
Bruce pulled out his phone, opened Alaric's social media, and quickly typed out a message.
"Butler family wedding, if you don't come soon, Cordelia's going to be swept away by someone else."
Just as he sent the message, Evelyn's cold gaze swept over.
Bruce smiled awkwardly. "Message from the company."
Evelyn's eyes were indifferent. "Then should you head back to Shadowpine to handle it?"
He quickly put away his phone. "It's nothing urgent."
Evelyn snorted lightly and withdrew her gaze. She'd already guessed Bruce was messaging Alaric.
Inside the estate was an outdoor garden.
In the garden were quite a few influencers, gathered in small groups, some taking photos, others recording videos, completely disregarding those around them.
Nicole's expression soured as she passed by, and she disliked Marlowe even more.
However, since Micah wasn't her biological son, she didn't care much about his wedding.
She was willing to arrange the wedding properly only to avoid giving outsiders reason to say she'd mistreated Micah, the illegitimate son.
Not wanting to leave a bad impression on Cordelia and Evelyn, Nicole smiled helplessly and explained.
"These are all Marlowe's friends. I hope Cordelia and Evelyn won't mind."
Cordelia had no prejudice against the influencer profession.
"Mrs. Butler, you worry too much. No profession is better than another—if it exists, it has its place."
Hearing this, Nicole immediately felt Cordelia was the perfect daughter-in-law candidate. Even listening to her voice felt warm and comforting.
Eric was destined to reach greater heights, and his behavior, as well as his family's every word and action, would be exposed to public scrutiny.
Cordelia's words were gentle and considerate, her manner dignified and composed, gracious and natural—she definitely wouldn't hold Eric back, and could even be a virtuous helper.
When one chooses a wife, one should choose someone virtuous. In Nicole's eyes, Cordelia was that virtuous wife, the daughter-in-law she had in mind.
