Chapter 110 Alaric's Stomach Illness Hospitalization, Cordelia's Emergency
Evelyn glanced at him and brushed his hand away.
"We're not even married yet, and you're already thinking about having kids?"
Bruce was about to speak when Donald came back from outside.
He had made plans early that morning to go fishing with a friend, intending to catch some fish to help Amber recover. He'd barely sat down when he got a call from Allegra saying Bruce had arrived.
Bruce and Evelyn had been together for quite a long time now.
Now that they were both at the age for marriage, Donald naturally knew why Bruce had come to The Stone Manor.
As long as he could make Evelyn happy, Donald had no other demands of Bruce.
When Bruce saw Donald enter the room, he immediately stood up from the sofa.
"Mr. Stone."
Meeting Donald formally for the first time, Bruce couldn't help feeling a bit nervous.
Donald nodded and gestured for Bruce to sit down. "Have a seat, let's talk."
Seeing this, Evelyn stood up holding Amber. "You two talk. I'll take Amber upstairs to play."
Bruce immediately looked at Evelyn with pleading eyes.
With Evelyn gone, he'd have to face Donald alone, which made him even more nervous.
But Evelyn seemed oblivious to the plea in Bruce's eyes and went upstairs.
She believed Bruce could face Donald on his own and convince Donald to let him marry her.
If he couldn't even do that, she would have to reconsider their relationship.
Evelyn had always been clear-headed about love and her future marriage.
Sunrise Valley Hospital.
Cordelia entered the department, changed into her white coat, and threw herself into work.
"Dr. Stone, we're short-staffed, so we need you to go out with the ambulance. The location is The Hughes Manor."
When Cordelia heard "The Hughes Manor," her expression immediately darkened and became unusually serious.
"What's the patient's condition?"
She was worried something had happened to Ruth, her expression grave.
She spoke while walking quickly toward the ambulance.
Her colleague immediately answered.
"The patient has severe stomach problems. He drank a lot at a business dinner last night. Initial assessment suggests it might be a perforated ulcer."
Hearing the description, Cordelia secretly breathed a sigh of relief, then thought of Alaric's stern face and paused for a few seconds.
Three years ago when she left Shadowpine, Alaric had been in good health.
It probably wasn't him.
Maybe it was a servant at The Hughes Manor.
The ambulance drove all the way into The Hughes Manor.
Cordelia and her colleague carried the stretcher into The Hughes Manor.
Ruth and Clifford were waiting anxiously in the living room.
Alaric had already been helped to sit on the sofa.
Earlier, as he was going downstairs to head to the company, he had fainted at the top of the stairs.
Ruth and the others heard the commotion and were startled.
They weren't sure what was wrong with Alaric's body and could only call for emergency help.
Alaric had regained consciousness somewhat, but his stomach was hurting badly. He frowned tightly, his expression dark and gloomy.
Seeing Ruth's anxious and worried look, he endured the severe pain and spoke.
"I'm fine, don't worry."
"Stop talking and let the doctor check you." Ruth was so anxious she was nearly in tears. When she saw the paramedics come in, she quickly asked them to examine Alaric.
Cordelia was wearing a mask and white coat, and Ruth was too anxious to recognize her at first.
But Alaric's gaze fell on her the moment she entered the room.
When he saw Cordelia's gem-like eyes, his gaze froze for a moment.
His stomach suddenly spasmed, and he let out a muffled groan of pain.
Cordelia walked over quickly, bent down to check his condition, and helped him lie down on the stretcher.
Alaric's deep eyes looked at her intently. The faint, fresh scent on her body made him feel somewhat at ease.
He lay down on the stretcher and was soon wheeled to the ambulance.
Ruth also recognized Cordelia's voice. She sat in her wheelchair and went outside, telling Clifford to quickly drive and follow them.
At the hospital, Cordelia arranged for Alaric to have tests done.
When Cordelia got the test results and saw that Alaric had severe stomach disease, her expression became very grave.
In just three years, Alaric's stomach had deteriorated to this state.
She frowned tightly, first arranging a hospital room for Alaric, then prescribing some medicine and having it sent over.
She walked to the door of Alaric's hospital room and heard Ruth's low voice scolding him. She walked in.
When Ruth saw Cordelia, she wiped away her tears.
"Cordelia, thank you for your trouble."
Cordelia had a gentle smile on her face. She walked to Ruth's side and patted her shoulder to comfort her.
"Mrs. Hughes, we don't need to be so formal with each other. Don't worry, Mr. Hughes's condition can still recover to what it was before with some time to recuperate."
Hearing Cordelia's words, Ruth felt somewhat relieved.
She held Cordelia's hand tightly, glanced at Alaric, and said in a heavy voice.
"Ever since you left Shadowpine, he's been drinking day and night."
Hearing Ruth's words, Alaric frowned slightly and interrupted.
"Grandma, go home. I want to rest for a while."
Ruth frowned and looked at him. "How can I feel at ease going home when you're like this?"
"I'll stay here. You rest."
Alaric looked away and closed his eyes. "You're all too noisy."
Cordelia paused, looking at Alaric lying in the hospital bed with a slightly pale face, and an inexplicable sense of loss rose in her heart.
She took a quiet breath, suppressed the discomfort in her heart, and said softly to Ruth.
"Mrs. Hughes, I need to get back to work. If you have any problems, you can find me in my office."
Ruth nodded.
Cordelia pressed her lips together and walked out of Alaric's hospital room. As she left, she glanced at Alaric and saw him with his eyes closed, clearly not wanting to see her.
Since leaving The Hughes Manor, Alaric had been deliberately avoiding her gaze.
Seeing his attitude now, Cordelia wasn't surprised.
She quickly collected herself and threw herself into her work.
All the colleagues in the emergency department were busy, so even though they knew about the delicate relationship between Cordelia and Alaric, no one had time to gossip or ask Cordelia about it.
After Cordelia left, Alaric slowly opened his eyes.
He lifted his eyelids and glanced at the hospital room door, then quickly looked away and asked Clifford.
"How long do I need to stay?"
Clifford didn't know how to answer and looked at Ruth.
Ruth looked at Alaric with a stern face, her expression serious. "Don't even think about running away this time. Wait until your condition stabilizes before you're discharged. Let Robert handle the company matters for now."
"Take your medicine first."
Hearing Ruth's words, Clifford prepared the medicine Cordelia had just brought and handed it to Alaric.
Alaric took it expressionlessly and put the medicine in his mouth.
The medicine was too bitter, and he immediately frowned.
Seeing that he wasn't making a fuss about being discharged, Ruth breathed a sigh of relief, also hoping he and Cordelia could use this opportunity to repair their relationship.
