The door to my penthouse slammed open It hit the wall with a loud bang and I did not even bother to look up to know who it was, it was Robert, only him would walk into my home like that.

Of course the news of the attack had reached him.

I was sitting on a stool in my open living room with my shirt was off and on the table next to me was a first aid kit. I was cleaning the gunshot wound on my arm It was a deep graze not a clean through-and-through but it still It hurt like hell.

The floor was stained with blood as I treat myself.

“What happened?” Robert’s thundered as he walked until he was standing right in front of me.

I kept dabbing the wound with alcohol not even flinch. “You saw the news… she gave a speech—“

He cuts me off “I’m not talking about the damn deal Ares!” he shouted. “I saw the news footage from outside the hotel There was a shooting and my daughter was there, what the hell happened?”

I finally looked at him my eyes were cold. “What do you think happened? Someone tried to kill her.”

His fist slammed down on my table themedical supplies jumped. “And you let this happen? You were suppose to protect her, this is your one job, to keep her safe!”

I stood up my own annoyance rising, I was also concerned about her, far more than he could ever imagine, far more than he could ever know. “I did my job, she is alive, isn’t she? She is not hurt, I was there to make sure”

“Barely!” he yelled pointing a finger at my bloody arm. “You got shot! What if that bullet had hit her? What then?”

“But it did not!” I yelled back. “It hit me I put my body in front of hers that is what you pay me for right?”

“I pay you to stop the bullets from being fired at all” he roared.

I let out an annoying breath as I sat back down grabbing a fresh bandage

“Who were they?” Robert asked his voice a little quieter but still hard. “The men, the ones responsible for the attack? Who sent them?”

I started wrapping the bandage around my arm.

“Talk to me Ares!” he demanded. “I need to know who did this?”

I took a deep breath, “it has to be Martian”

“I know my brother,” he said softly. “I know he is a dangerous disgusting man but this… Ares, he can’t get to her Nothing can happen to my daughter absolutely nothing. Do you understand me?”

“I understand,” I said. “I will not let anything happen to her and you know that.”

“Alyssa needs to stay alive… I can’t lose her too, please”

“I know!” I shouted standing up again as the bandage get loose again“Do you think I do not know that? Do you think I am not tearing myself apart inside? I am as concerned as you are about Alyssa… after all she’s also like a daughter to me”

My jawline hardened knowing my relationship with his daughter was far more than that.

He nods.

“Your brother would stop at nothing to kill her and after today’s attack… I know there will be more”

“Then we have to act fast” Robert said worriedly. “I do not care if he is my brother Ares I will stop at nothing to kill him after what he did to me.”

I turned to face him. “He is my problem for now I will handle him.”

“You could not handle him tonight!” Robert argued. “How will you handle him next time? He almost got her, your ‘handling’ of him almost got my little girl killed!”

“What do you want me to do?” I asked, throwing my hands up in frustration. “I am trying my very best to keep this low, if it was up to me, Martian wouldn’t be breathing by now”

“You need to find him!” Robert insisted. “You need to draw him out use yourself as bait or something, you can’t just wait for him to try again!”

“And what if that puts Alyssa in more danger?” I asked. “What if my plan goes wrong? What if he has other plans that we’re unaware of just like the one tonight?”

Robert let out a long heavy sigh. “When her mother died,” he began his voice quiet, “I promised I would always protect Alyssa. I promised I would keep her safe. This company… faking my death… it was all to protect her to make a safe world for her and now…”

I did not know what to say I just stood there, holding my wounded arm.

“You have to end this, Ares,” Arthur said, still looking out the window. “You have to end him I want my brother dead”

“I know,” I said again.

He turned to face me. “Do you? Do you really? Because if you hesitate or mess things up and something happens to her… I will not forgive you. I will kill you myself.”

I looked straight into his eyes “If something happens to her because of me, you will not have to kill me. I will do it myself.”

He gave a single sharp nod. “Good. Then we understand each other.”

“We do,” I said.

“What is your plan?” he asked. “After tonight.”

“I am increasing her security,” I said. “I am adding more men and I am moving her to a safer location or maybe to my penthouse, she will not like it but she does not have a choice.”

“Good,” he said.

Robert walked towards the door stopping before he left. “Keep me informed if anything comes up again and what happened tonight should not repeat itself again.” He warns

“I will,” I said.

He looked at my arm. “And get that wound properly stitched you are no good to her if you are dead.”

Then he walked out the door closed softly behind him.
