Chapter 47 Let’s go home, kitten
Karen thought about the turn of events, which made sense to her. She had met and fallen in love with Roger without knowing any members of his family, and since he wouldn't let her go, perhaps his family could help.
“Alright. If you want me back, Roger, then there are four conditions.”
For as long as she mentioned getting back together, Roger wanted it legalized because nothing was going to take her away from him again.
“I can get a lawyer to draft an agreement if you want,” Roger said seriously. Karen shook her head. “You don’t know what they are, and lawyers don’t work during weekends.”
Roger picked up his phone and made a call. “Marcus, get to the Dawsons mansion in thirty minutes or find yourself another client.”
Karen panicked. Why was Roger behaving so strangely? His authority seemed to be more than Giovanni's, whereas the latter was his father. Why was a rich boy living off his father acting like he owned the world?
“You are joking, right?”
“You’ll see,” Roger said calmly. Delanie stood up, feeling excited. “I’ll get some desserts, and if you still don’t like the name, I don’t mind taking it back.”
Days ago, she thought Roger was going to die, but since Karen was his lifeline, Delanie loved her as a sister.
Karen sighed but did not immediately respond, especially after finding out how much the name meant to Roger.
“Why didn’t you ever give the name to Tonia?” There were just too many questions left unanswered, and she was eager to clear her mind.
“Because she was never mine,” Roger responded casually. “With her, I never went insane when I saw her flirt and all. Initially, I thought it was because I loved her, but I was wrong. When you left, things became clear.”
Karen knew it was true. Roger would see Tonia flirting with those boys and still be desirous of her, so could it be true that he really lost interest in her?
“How many minutes more for the lawyer to be here?” Delanie asked after she returned with the desserts. “I made them,” she added.
Karen’s brows raised with delight at the mere sight of them as Molly informed Delanie after checking the time. “Five minutes more for the lawyer to be here.”
Karen was slightly nervous, but the fruit ice cream was calming. She could taste every ingredient on her tongue, enjoying it without feeling guilty.
“Mister Dawson, I made it in less than thirty minutes,” a lanky man said from the entrance, looking exhausted. His attire showed he must have been playing golf when he received the call.
Roger leaned against his chair, looking like the king he was, his expression stern. “Join us, Marcus, and prepare an agreement with everything my wife is going to say.”
Marcus knew about the marriage because Roger had consulted him before doing so. Marcus had even helped to get the documents fast to him.
Karen was getting nervous. This man was old enough to be Roger’s father, and yet, he was being ordered around. The fact that he was a barrister was a greater cause for concern.
“What’s going on?” she asked. Everyone knew she still had no idea who Roger was because she hadn’t been allowed to mingle since her return.
“Place your demands, wildcat,” Roger said. Everyone laughed, but it wasn’t enough to calm Karen from her nervousness.
“There isn’t a need for a lawyer.”
“Then how do you hold me accountable?” Roger asked. Karen took a deep breath. “Fine. Number one, I don’t want you to look at any woman who isn’t family except me.”
The lawyer was looking lost until Roger spoke from annoyance. “What are you waiting for? Write it down.”
Bringing out his iPad, he began typing on it as Karen continued. “Number two, everything you have should be under my name.”
Knowing that Roger had other siblings, he couldn’t be so rich and would want to save his money. No man in his right mind would sign off the little he owned to a woman he called a wife, right?
Well, Karen had a second reason for requesting this, and that was to make sure women like Tonia would never stand a chance.
However, she noticed the countenance of everyone at the table had changed. “Do you know who you are dealing with?” The lawyer asked. Karen was nervous, but her voice was firm.
“He has the chance to walk away, and yet he wants to pursue me. Well, everything I have belongs to him as well, and as it stands now, we both do not have much to our names. Mind you, what you inherit from your parents isn’t included in this deal.” A sigh of relief escaped Giovanni, as he was beginning to think he had misjudged Karen’s character.
Apparently, she wasn’t even moved by all the wealth she was seeing in front of her, only protecting what they will gather together. But the truth is, Roger had so much wealth that everyone doubted he’d agree.
“Add it,” Roger ordered without hesitation. The family was stunned, but the lawyer was reluctant. “Mister Dawson, we are talking about trillions of dollars in both liquid assets.”
Karen’s face reddened. “Excuse me, what are you talking about?”
“You don’t know? Mister Dawson is the richest man alive,” Marcus revealed. Karen did not believe it.
“No, he’s just a bodyguard….” she was saying, but the look on the faces of everyone confirmed the lawyer’s words. Karen shook. No wonder Tonia was back to claim Roger, but how?
He was so humble when he worked as Tonia’s bodyguard, taking orders from everyone. Was he so humble to stoop so low because of love?
Roger cleared the confusion in her mind. “I’m not a bodyguard, Karen. I only took the job because I wanted to woo Tonia, but then I met you. All I wanted was to be loved for me and not my possessions.”
Now she understood what she saw on Wade’s phone and the reason why Van told her to stay away from the news.
“Is that why you told me to stay away from the news?”
Giovanni nodded. “It doesn’t change anything. Continue with your demands.” He was interested in seeing where this was all headed.
Women would try to use fair and foul means to get Roger’s attention because of his wealth, so how interesting would it be for them to realize he has nothing without his little wife?
“Prepare the transfer documents immediately,” Roger informed the lawyer, but Karen refused. “No, take that out.” If she had known about this part, she would have placed her demands differently, but Roger refused.
“Too late. Your words to me are gold and must not be taken for granted. Everything will be transferred to your name,” he said seriously, Karen felt warmth emanating from him to her heart again, but that wasn't all.
“But you can’t also leave me,” Roger concluded. Karen felt like she had jumped to conclusions too quickly. Roger was still as possessive as ever, and it didn't seem like that was going to change anytime soon.
“I’m not finished,” Karen stated when Marcus began typing on his iPhone, Roger encouraged her.
“Then go ahead and trust me, nothing will scare me away from you.”
Karen gritted her teeth. All of this was to make him hate her or think she was a gold digger. The more demands she made, the deeper the hole she seemed to be digging for herself.
“No sex until I feel ready.”
Roger paused, his lips pursed, and the atmosphere tensed up before he added, “Done. Can we leave now?”
He stood up and held out his hand to her. Karen felt like she had just hung herself on a cross. “I’m not finished,” she refused to stand up. Roger sat back in his chair, his face and voice calm. “Go on.”
“I have the right to pursue my dreams and education. You can’t stop me, and if I don’t fall in love with you in a week, you should agree to a divorce. I won’t take anything.”
Roger paused at that. He had hurt her emotions before, and now she was giving him just one week to repair it?
“One month,” he bargained, but Karen shook her head. This might be her only chance of escape.
“Marcus, send this to my email first thing tomorrow. Our signatures will serve as a seal.”
“Yes, sir,” the lawyer replied before leaving as Roger smiled at Karen. “If you don’t like kitten, I’ll give you another one.”
“It’s okay, we only have one week anyway,” she countered. Roger smiled as she saw something flash in his eyes before he held out his hand to her. “Let’s go home, kitten.”
