Chapter 107 God, what about me?
“It’s rented,” Delanie’s voice cut through, and Wade nodded. He had already guessed that the car wasn’t hers. “I’ll call the company to come and pick it up,” Delanie added, and Wade agreed, feeling excited.
“Then I get to drive you home.” Not only did he now have her contact information, but he would also get to know her address.
Delanie sent text messages to Hector, arranging for him to send someone to retrieve the car. She couldn’t contact Roger for fear that he might be upset and mess things up for her. Even Declan would easily side with Roger, and Hector was the only one who could defy Roger sometimes.
Delanie met Oriana at the door. She had also freshened up, and Chad was beside her. The club was quiet and empty as they walked out.
“Thank you, guys, for watching out for us,” Delanie said. Oriana smiled and glanced at Chad. “Yeah, thanks a lot.”
Chad’s mind was a little distant, especially after Wade informed him that the car the girls brought was rented. He had been interested in Oriana before but knew that his parents would not accept someone below their social circle.
“It’s nothing,” he said casually, and the drive to Roger’s former apartment, which now belonged to Delanie, was in silence.
“Do you want us to come in?” Wade asked, but Delanie forced a smile. Hector had texted her that the doors were open, and it would be weird if they walked in together in that situation.
“Perhaps next time,” she replied, but Wade insisted, “Do you have plans for tonight?”
“No, but…” she started to say when Wade cut in, asking, “Can I come and pick you up for a real date?”
Excitement bubbled through Delanie. “Sure.”
Oriana looked at Chad, expecting him to say something, but he only looked away.
“Great. I’ll see you at 7 pm,” Wade said, and Delanie smiled at him. “Perfect.”
As Wade and Chad drove off, Chad made an interesting observation. “Your girl looks slightly different without makeup. Looking closely, she almost looks like the superstar, Molly Dawson.”
Wade froze instantly. “I thought I was imagining things when I saw her the first time, but Donner Molly was there, and they didn’t seem like they were even on speaking terms. Last night, she looked different with her makeup, but this morning, I’d say the same.”
Chad pondered his words carefully and replied, “You're right. It could just be a case of a false resemblance because, gosh, this girl is too destitute to be a Dawson.”
“I know. The Dawsons would never allow their heiress to live in a place like this, and besides, there are no records of them having any children except Roger, who was adopted.”
Chad raised his brows. “How do you know that? You never mentioned it before.”
“I did tell you that Molly was almost my stepmother. Don had Roger before she came into his life.”
Chad leaned back, his thoughts in disarray. “I don’t mean to be insensitive, but they should have had their own children.”
“I think they tried. I remember my birth mom and dad joking during those times that Molly was barren. The day I attacked them at the hospital, her fans had gathered around because she passed out during her performance.”
“As I lingered to carry out my grandparents' instructions, I overheard the doctor saying that they had to terminate the pregnancy to save her life.”
“Roger was arriving then, so I had to leave. I didn’t hear the rest, but since there are no records, she must have terminated the pregnancy. It’s sad, but what matters is that she's alive, happy, and healthy.”
“Yeah, you're right. Do you really plan to take that girl on a date? Come on, Wade, she would set you back ten steps.”
They were aware of the rules, and Chad, who had been stubborn since his youth, had never followed them but was now willing to do so to secure his inheritance.
On the other hand, Wade, who had always been obedient to his adopted parents, was the one defying the odds.
“I've been obedient all my life, following a script. For once, I want to pursue what I want for myself,” he said with determination, while Chad looked at him with pity.
“You should pursue your dreams with this determination, and not a woman. Your parents have someone for you, and I believe she would be from a better family,” he advised.
But Wade was so upset that he hit the steering wheel in anger before pulling over to the side of the road.
“You want me to marry a girl I've never seen and don’t even know, just to make them happy? God, what about me?”
Chad shook his head, feeling that Wade was overreacting. “It's not just to make them happy. Their casinos and other businesses are in debt, and they need the partnership, unless you're willing to sell off all your assets to help them.”
The reminder struck a chord in Wade's heart. “You know what's sad? Even if I liquidate all my assets, I would still need about fifty million in cash to clear their debts.”
Chad chuckled. “That's why they have a solution, but if you're not interested, I have another plan. However, it will depend on whether you have the courage to pursue it.”
Feeling the conversation weighing heavily on his mind, Wade wanted to end it but was compelled to ask, “What plan are you referring to?”
