The Lost Of Power
Heather looked like she wanted to cry. Mom hugged her, trying to comfort her, but we could see the worry on her face, too. This situation is challenging for all of us, but I am happy that Mom always had her career and made her own money. Being a doctor pays very well, so I know we will be fine. Plus, Dad has been working for years and has investments and stocks in other companies. Heather is following in Mom’s footsteps by becoming a doctor, and I will graduate business school next spring. I already have an internship lined up at Sara’s family company. “ Justin, do you think Grandma will divorce Grandpa?” Heather asked, “ I don’t know. I have never seen her so mad. Plus, by how she talked to him, it seemed like she meant business. Maybe after she relaxes a bit, she might change her mind.” Right then, the front door flew open, and in walked the man of the hour, Grandpa Daniel. He stormed past us like a tornado and headed for the stairs.
Shit, I said to myself. “Mom, this doesn’t look good. He looks even more upset; I will tell Dad he's back.” I stood up and left the room to find Dad. Grandpa looks furious, and I don’t think he should go near Grandma right now. I saw Dad in the backyard and told him about Grandpa, and he rushed into the house and up the stairs. I followed behind him while calling Mom. When we were at the top of the staircase, we could hear Grandpa's voice yelling and cursing ferociously. We ran down the hallway, and Dad kicked the door open and webburst in. Shit, what is going on with everyone today? Dad has always been the obedient son by complying with Grandpa's every wish, so his behavior right now is way out of character for him. I think Grandpa's behavior has finally gone too far.
“ If you yell at her one more time, I am going to kick your ass.” Hell yeah, you go, Dad. Grandma looked slightly shaken from the door being kicked in but didn’t look afraid. Heather was crying; she hated confrontations. Mom was busy trying to calm Dad down and get him to leave the room with her. Dad was having none of it; he softly shook her hands off him. “ This ends today, I have had enough of his shit to last a lifetime. You will stop talking and treat Mom like she is beneath you. As a matter of fact, you will start treating all of us with respect if you want to continue being a member of this family.” Grandpa looked at Dad as if he had lost his mind.
Oh shit, Grandpa is not going to back down. Why the hell is he taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves? “ Bring it, boy. Do you think you are man enough to take me on?” No, the hell he didn’t. “ Grandpa, are you out of your mind? Are you seriously going to try and fight Dad?” I yelled. Heather was crying even louder now, and the poor staff were standing outside the room in the hallway, not knowing what to do. “ Grandpa, I think you should check into a hotel to cool down before things get any worse. If you keep this up, you might do something you cannot fix.” He snorted out of his nose, pointed at all of us, and said, “None of you are a part of my family anymore. All you ever did was take from me, and now that I need something in return, you hung me out to dry.”
I pinched the bridge of my nose while shaking my head. “ Grandpa, why are you being such an asshole? You know all this is your fault; you can’t keep blaming us. It is not fair, and you know it. ” he grabbed his jacket and stormed out of the room, but not before shoving Dad hard with his shoulder. Before Dad could react, Grandma grabbed Dad’s hand and shook her head, telling Dad to let him go. When he got Heather, he stopped, his face softened, and Grandma wiped her tears with one of his thumbs, and then he left. Heather was always his little angel, and he loved her.
Dad hugged Grandma and kissed her on her head, then asked, “Are you okay, Mom? Did he hurt you?” he rubbed her back. I asked the staff, “Could you please bring Grandma some water? Thanks.” Then I looked at the head butler and said, “Could you please pack a bag for Grandpa so he will have clothes for about a week? You will need to deliver it to him when you’re done.” He responded with a nod and walked away. We left the room to give dad and grandma some privacy. Today has turned out to be one hell of a day that no one was expecting. I am mentally drained from all this drama and secrets. In that order, I need a shower, a drink, and a nap.
