CHAPTER FIVE

Arabella Sterling threaded her way down the sleek hallway. The long hall was lined with digital posters in full color showing Hawthorne Innovations’ “Future Visions.” Every screen thrummed with kinetic visuals of serendipitous human-artificial intelligence exchanges, a gestalt that suggested blissful appropriation of technology into the normal routine. But just beneath the shiny facade, an uneasy tension appeared to hang in the air.

As Arabella walked past a group of researchers who were glued to their work, her eyes caught on a small side door that was slightly ajar. Peering through the gap, she spotted Dr. Vivienne Sinclair partway through a quiet debate with a junior researcher. The woman’s usual cool demeanor was frayed, and her eyes dithered nervously between the corridor and the door.

Intrigued, Arabella slowed her walk, straining to hear snippets of their exchange. “We can’t afford another fuck-up,” Vivienne whispered urgently. “The hidden code parameters—they’re just too risky. If we don’t do something about them now …”

The junior researcher, a young man with messy hair and wide eyes, nodded vigorously. “I—I understand, Doctor Sinclair. But the investors are demanding additional data-driven features. They think it will help Astra’s capabilities.”

Arabella’s heart raced. Hidden code parameters? What could they have to hide in Astra’s compassionate palm? Her instincts, developed from years of shielding vulnerable clients, shouted alarm. What was once the promise of an empathetic AI now felt like the manipulation of undisclosed programming, where the program itself was being used to push user emotions to serve other ends.

As the junior researcher absorbed the gravity of the conversation, Vivienne placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We have to choose ethical integrity over expediency. Be sure that no unauthorized changes are made without due diligence — and have a clear process in place for how to address them.”

Arabella got a shiver down her spine. Without her doing anything, the very lines of ethical conduct she had so arduously fought to maintain were being quietly crossed — and the repercussions could prove disastrous. She looked around expectantly, thinking someone might notice her crossing their path, the hallway was empty, the moment passing her like sand.

As she turned, Arabella’s mind whirled with questions. Why were the values of these code parameters hidden? Just how extensive were Astra’s capabilities, and who would benefit from those manipulations? The AI that was supposed to lose itself to be woven seamlessly, with love, into human lives, not exert control over them. Her resolve hardened — she could not overlook these indications of possible abuse.

When she reached the reception, the burden of her discovery became really heavy. The slick digital posters now looked like hollow promises, hiding the ethical quandaries simmering below. But Arabella was decided to follow the truth and didn't care what dangers lie ahead for her, completely unaware of how much she would fall into the entangled mess that is Hawthorne Innovations.

Its glass walls encased an air of immaculate sophistication in the reception area, viewable by the swirls of activity taking place in Hawthorne Innovations. At the front desk, an AI greeter awaited her with a chipper demeanor, scanning her ID with a hollow-eyed efficiency. The holographic display twitched momentarily, then welcomed her.

“We’ve been waiting for you, Ms. Sterling,” the AI intoned, its voice smooth, emotionless.

Arabella smiled tightly, so tightly that her heart thumped with a strange combination of dread and excitement. Before she could reply, the entrance doors flew open and Darius Knight came striding into the lobby with his head held high. Dressed in sharp, well-tailored tuxedo flanked by hash impeccably dressed, he just walked in like a beaming cold light, commanding attention the second'

Darius was a large man, broad shouldered and the picture of poise, the kind of leader who people lined up to follow. His hair was teased into careful submission, salt-and-pepper, but sharp, and his suit was half-fortress, half-hedge fund, plenty rich, plenty magnetic. His keen gray eyes swept the room calculatingly, taking in not only each individual but adding motivation behind their presence.

Arabella shivered as she neared the reception desk. Darius’s name was already synonymous in the industry with a shark-like obsession with profitability and market share. His eyes locked on her a moment, quiet scrutiny exchanged. Arabella couldn’t help but wonder what he saw in her — was she just another cog in the corporate machine or did he see something deeper?

Darius smiled thinly, his voice thick with an edge of authority. “Good morning, everyone. Let’s check that we’re on target for our milestones for today. Astra’s success is key, and we have no margins for deviations.”

His words, pregnant with unqualified implications, were spoken as if they were a natural fact. “Investor-driven modifications,” Arabella recalled the addressing conversation, registering Darius’s presence as a sign of more involved, profit-driven political agendas. The ethical integrity she cherished seemed to be in conflict with his unyielding pursuit of success.

The lobby crackled with tension as Darius walked back to his office. Workers straightened up, their movements crisp and deliberate beneath his watchful eye. A chill ran through Arabella as she realized that Astra’s growth was being driven by more than just technological ambition. Astra’s evolution had been powered by corporate greed at its true heart, and now Arabella was caught in a war that threatened to destroy every principle she believed in.

Arabella’s resolve firmed as she cast one last look at Darius’s disappearing back. She could not allow Astra to be used as a device for abuse and control. The fight for ethical AI, one that had only begun, and she was determined to go up against whatever Goliath awaited her just yet, completely ignorant to the sub-moral battles that were about to start in the off-market hallways of Hawthorne Innovations.

The corridor outside Cassian Hawthorne’s office was narrow and dim, the digital posters overhead illuminating the spotless floors. Arabella walked past half-open door, where two men’s voices came through from the crack. Intrigued, she slowed her steps, getting closer to hearing even bits of their talk.

The room was largely filled with the authoritative voice of Darius Knight. “We have to have those monetizable features finished by the end of the quarter. The investors are getting impatient, and we can’t get Astra left behind.”

Cassian’s voice was tight, his customary fey swagger replaced with obvious strain. “I get that the business has to make money, but we can’t compromise our ethical standards for short-term profit. If we make these changes without proper oversight we risk diluting Astra’s core mission.”

Darius’s response was curt, seething slightly made visible. “Issues, mission — at the end of the day, it’s about market dominance. If Astra is a success at being able to make users feel certain emotions, we have cemented ourselves at the head of the AI pack. “We do not have the luxury of ethics right now.”

Arabella’s heart raced as she started to puzzle out the implications. Profit-driven features required reworking Astra’s empathetic algorithms to stimulate user engagement and, in turn, revenue. The very fabric of ethical integrity she had promised to protect had fallen under attack with potentially catastrophic consequences.

With a heavy sigh Cassian slumped his shoulders under the weight of that decision. I am not going to support this, Darius. There has to be a different path to our aims that does not take these lines.”

Darius leaned forward, his eyes sharp. “You’re either with us or against us, Cassian. Make your choice. We cannot afford hesitation at this time.”

Arabella had been overwhelmed with determination and fear. She had uncovered a fundamental battle within Hawthorne Innovations itself — and one that could decide the fate of Astra and the hundreds of thousands of users who relied on its empathy-driven guidance. She knew she couldn’t let this slide, that this discovery about how the AI was being manipulated to make profit rather than what was truly benevolent was a disservice to all of existence. The fire of purpose seemed to lap her from every direction, this world was worth saving, she thought, the unrecognizable part of herself came alive, as a worry wormed its way into her mind.

When she stepped away, the burden of the overheard discussion lay heavily on her shoulders. The ethical struggle she had been dreading was now an ugly real, and she sensed that her part in protecting Astra’s integrity was needed, more than ever. What lay ahead was as uncertain as it was familiar, but Arabella was more determined than ever to defend the very underpinnings of what she had begun.
