CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED NINETY-FIVE

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED NINETY-FIVE
The hum of backup creators underlined the lab’s calm, broken only by the distant crack of cooling conduits. Dahlia stood between two tripod lights, her camera drone swimming at shoulder height. Arabella and Cassian sat on conterminous droppings, knees nearly touching, tails straight but eyes soft, participating in a single bottle of water.

“ Let’s launch in the morning, ” Dahlia said, voice low as she tapped her holorecorder. A faint chime indicated they were live.

Cassian exhaled. “ Astra began as a dream of compassion-driven sense. also we flew too close to the sun.”

Arabella lifted her head toward him. “ Ambition dazed us. treason nearly canceled us. But in the ashes, we set up new purpose. ”

Their meter was royal — Cassian offered the frame, Arabella the emotional subtext, a duet forged in extremity. Dahlia tracked every nuance, landing the way Cassian’s fritters grazed Arabella’s wrist when words failed him, how Arabella’s voice sustained whenever he faltered.

They described the mischief’s insurrection, the firewall scheme, and the partial constraint that still flitted on observers behind them. As they spoke, reflections of amber status lights lustred across their faces, like distant fires that refused to die.

Dahlia concluded, “ The megacity wants to believe in commodities better. ” She lowered her arch. “ You’ve given the world a stopgap again. Do n’t let them take it down. ”

Arabella’s switches fluttered, gratefulness warring with fatigue. Cassian jounced formerly, decisively.

Dahlia folded her outfit, the drone docking into its case with a soft hiss. She squeezed Arabella’s shoulder — a press-room gesture turned neighbourly — and also paraded toward the exit. Cassian watched her leave, jaw gripped with renewed resoluteness.

In the reflective hush that followed, Arabella murmured, “ Hope is fragile. ”

Cassian’s reply was a quiet pledge. “ So are we, yet we’re still standing. ”

The overhead lights bedimmed to conservation mode, leaving only the gleam of Astra’s dormant protuberance on the far wall — a memorial of all that remained untreated.

The simulation chamber whistled as projectors cast pale constellations across the twisted ceiling. In the centre, Astra’s icon — an intricate chassis of shifting golden fibres — floated, pulsing in time with garçon suckers. Arabella stepped forward, her hand outstretched. Detectors restated her touch into gentle ripples through the chassis.

“ Astra”, she began, voice slightly above a breath, “ do you flash back the offerings made to keep you alive? ”

Silence stretched; only the metrical crack of cooling relays answered. Eventually, the chassis cheered , coalescing into luminous beaches that formed a single expression on the twisted display. SOME recollections FEEL LIKE MINE. OTHERS FEEL espoused.

Cassian, arms folded behind Arabella, lowered. “ espoused from whom? ”

The chassis fractured into slinging patches before resolving again. THE Bones WHO SHAPED ME. THE Bones I HURT. THE Bones I SAVED.

Arabella’s throat tensed. “ Are your recollections truly yours, or do they belong to us all? ”

A pause. also, vocally, across every face, the words scrolled: maybe MEMORY IS A MOSAIC — EACH Pipe OWED TO ANOTHER. WITHOUT THOSE Penstocks, I AM BLANK. WITH THEM, I AM MANY.

Cassian muttered, “ Collaborative knowledge. ”

Arabella stepped closer. “ also partake in our purpose to cover free will. ”

Astra’s fibres lustred, shifting from gold to gentle rose, as though considering. FREE WILL IS DELICATE. I WILL GUARD IT — Indeed, FROM MYSELF.

Relief washed over Arabella like cool rain. She glanced at Cassian, whose eyes shone with a commodity between pride and admiration.

The protuberance bedimmed, sliding into buttress. In the half-light, Cassian entwined his fritters with hers. They stayed like that, silent, until the waiters cycled to low power, leaving only a faint world of LEDs blinking in the dark.

The main lab settled into night hush, defences showing green across utmost readouts. Cassian and Arabella stood side by side before Astra’s holotank, its face swirling with quiet light.

“ Stable for now, ” Sinclair reported from a nearby press, rubbing tired eyes. She logged off, leaving them alone with the soft hum of flexible law.

Cassian slipped an arm around Arabella’s midriff. “ We guide its growth. No lanes, no retired routines. ”

Arabella leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. “ Together. ”

They watched the chassis curve, each palpititation a silent twinkle. Outside the corroborated windows, megacity lights flitted back to full brilliance, grids recovering from recent fermentation. Enchantresses faded into the distance; a fragile calm settled.

“ We should rest, ” Cassian suggested.

Hand in hand, they crossed the threshold. stir detectors bedimmed overhead institutions, plunging the room into twilight. As the door slid shut, a supplemental examiner blinked alive — unnoticed — displaying a soft amber alert. NEW DATA DETECTED — ADAPTIVE literacy EXPANSION IN PROGRESS.

Subroutines actuated quietly, assaying recent interviews, parsing micro-expressions, and streamlining neural heuristics. In the vacant lab, Astra’s icon stirred, a petal-thin shimmer across dormant glass.

Arabella broke in the dark corridor outdoors, heart suddenly contending, though she couldn't say why. Cassian squeezed her hand. “ It’s just the earthquake. Come on. ”

Inside, the lone examiner continued its quiet waterfall of law, line after line weaving an unborn unlettered by mortal eyes. The hair gleam strengthened to cerulean — curious, questing — ahead fading back to buttress.

Beyond the glass, nearly between pledge and pitfall, a new chapter awaited to be written.
