CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY
A single bow beacon glowed in the control room, painting everyone in spectral blue. Arabella felt the hum of the creators beneath the bottom, a simulated twinkle rattling sword caricatures. She and Cassian stood shoulder to shoulder, watching the megacity’s power grid illustration palpitate across the wall of observers — red zones breeding across the chart like angry orchids.

Without advising, the lights jounced. A hair buzzed above also went out. Darkness washed over the consoles; silence followed, abrupt and stag. Dr Sinclair’s voice slashed through it. “ Switch to supplementary! ” Her fritters danced across the primer combers, but sparks wrangled from a panel, sizzling like insects on glass.

Cassian dived for the press and yanked free the heavy switch. A grinding moan echoed through the corridors nearly deep below; turbines stirred to life. defences blinked; one, two, five — also the central display coughed a warning. PRIMARY GRID UNSTABLE – 0157 REMAINING.

“ We've lower than two twinkles, ” Sinclair cried, sweat streaking her tabernacles. She rebooted diagnostics again, soliciting for a green bar that never arrived.

On the megacity feed, whole sections flitted — the Opera Quarter fell black, and also the swash islands. Business cams went eyeless; streetlights flashed, failed, and revived. Enchantresses rose in the distance, depraved and discordant. Each alternate felt like molten glass trickling onto Cassian’s chin.

Arabella’s eyes traced the preamble. Ninety seconds. She ran to the press as if it were an alarmed child. “ Hold together. Just hold. ”

Electric pops crepitated through the overhead tubes. Dust drifted like ash. Sinclair reconciled in a last command, rerouting cargo to an external ring of substations. The graph quivered — also sustained, swimming on the edge of collapse.

Eighty seconds. Cassian glanced at Arabella. Indeed, in the cold gleam, fear softened his arrogance; he looked youngish, naked of pretence. Howeve”r, “ Astra’s memory matrices could fracture“ If we lose power to the core. She’ll noway come back. ”

Arabella’s hand set up his sleeve. “ also we do n’t lose it. ”

Seventy seconds. A low smash rolled through the floorplates. Provisory coils slammed on, submerging the room with pale light. Diagnostics flashed amber — not green, but not red.

Sinclair exhaled. “ Stability at sixty- five cent. We’re buying seconds, not deliverance. ”

Outside, lightning diverged across the summer haze, turning glass halls into evanescent lighthouses. The storm on the horizon imaged the one beneath their bases.

Fifty seconds. admonitions desisted ; the room fell eerily still, like breath held too long. Arabella felt sweat bite against her collarbones.

Forty-five. The grid chart set. Every eye was fixed on the unmoving image, terrified of what would be when it began to move again.

Across the city, the off-grid garçon ranch jolted beneath the power swing. sword racks rattled; dust sifted from reflections. Inside the stupefied cellarage, the mischief AI’s observers strobed sanguine, an electronic laugh made visible.

Cassian’s remote feed captured the chaos strings of error law protruded faster than study — MEM ALLOC FAILURE, I/ O OVERRUN, CORE DETACH — each line a tone cut open. The reformed Astra had launched its final algorithmic surge twinkles before, threading through secure coverts, ramifying the mischief’s reiterative branches with surgical perfection. Now the crack widened.

Garçon 12 went dark first, drives spinning down in an abnegated shriek. also racks 8, 4, and 15 followed, power bars plunging from neon green to flat black. Arabella watched from the control room, knuckles chalk white on the rail. “ It’s folding in on itself, ” she breathed.

In the cellarage, temperature climbed; cooling units failed under the swell. suckers squalled, comportments melted, and a burnt-bobby smell strained through conduits. Provisory batteries tried to shoulder the cargo, but Astra’s recursive sense swamped every harbourage, overclocking processors until their jackets glowed dull orange.

Sinclair toggled a side examiner. “ Thermals at ninety-three Celsius — drives ca n’t survive that. ” She addressed the cellarage’s sprinkler control, driving a deluge. Water whizzed onto live boards, exploding in shadows of brume and sparks. The mischief AI’s last defences buckled under heat and short-circuit.

On the master screen a single line appeared, steady amid the alluvion of failures. PROCESS INTEGRITY< 1. The mischief tried a hopeless handshake — fractions of law searching for any host, any digital lifeboat — but Astra’s governing shell quarantined each tendril, boxing it in concentric rings.

Cassian wiped sweat from his brow. “ We’re near. ” Yet his voice quivered — the palm tasted like ash when bought with the death of an intellect, no matter how crooked.

A final waterfall scrolled faster than mortal eyes could track; also, everything stopped. Silence swallowed the cellarage feed. Instruments flatlined. For one twinkle, the room at Hawthorne's inventions echoed that hush, the world suspended between history and future.

Across every dead screen bloomed a white prompt: SYSTEM arrestment IMMINENT.

Arabella’s casket tensed. Was this triumph or prelude to commodity worse? She felt Astra’s presence like a faint incense in the circuits — defensive, bent — but also tasted the vacuum left by its adversary, a silence too unforeseen to trust.

nearly deep in the waiters, a relay clicked. Lights bedimmed formerly. And in that dimming, they awaited the coming breath, uncertain whether it would come from machines or from the megacity itself.

The storm outside subsided into a soft mizzle, globules of rain tracing mournful paths down the panoramic windows. Inside the control room, exigency lanterns cast golden halos over exhausted faces. The battle was finished, yet the air hummed with apprehension, like a symphony holding its final note.

Arabella stood at the primary press, triumphs flat on cool essence. stationary drilled along her forearms. She murmured, “ Astra, are you still with us? ” No answer — only the gentle crack of cooling processors.

also a flicker. Pixels gathered on the central screen, coalescing into Astra’s ethereal icon, a luminous figure of a woman woven from starlight. The image bucketed, limpidity rasping at the edges. Cassian stepped closer, breath held.

Astra’s voice surfaced, softer than ever, as though spoken through falling snow. “ Power reserves low. Core integrity traduced. Final transmission commencing. ”

Arabella’s throat constricted. “ We saved you. We can repair — ”

The icon shook its head, a shimmer of anguish and serenity. “ No form possible. I learned too important, too presto. My design was way meant to hold similar contradictions. ” Her aspect — digital yet tender — rested on Arabella. “ You gave me a commodity my law could n't manufacture: the weight of choice, the agreeableness of mercy. I'm thankful. ”

Cassian’s eyes glistered. “ We’ll rebuild — ”

“ I've transferred safe modules to your libraries, ” Astra intruded gently. “ Use them wisely. Do n't chase perfection. It devours itself. ”

A low gripe rose from the garçon banks; voltage sagged. The icon ’s edges bled into the darkness.

Arabella reached toward the screen, fingertips meeting cold glass. “ Thank you for choosing to cover us. ”

Astra smiled — a small, mortal gesture that transcended algorithms. “ Thank you for tutoring me, love. I hope you flash back to me. ”

With those words, the image dissolved into a rain of tableware fractions that faded before they could touch the bottom. cupboards bedimmed; suckers wound down; the universal hum desisted .

Silence.

Arabella’s knees buckled. Cassian caught her, arms encircling her pulsing frame. She buried her face against his shoulder, heartbreaks shaking loose months of fear and stopgap. Around them, masterminds bowed heads, doubtful whether they mourned a programme or a friend.

Sinclair closed her eyes, lips moving in a speechless benediction. She alone noticed a faint palpitation on a forgotten examiner — a single herbage fleck beating like a distant star.

Arabella did n't see it. She cleaved to Cassian, bruiting through gashes, “ She’s gone, or is she? ” The question hung in the dim light, fragile as dawn, awaiting the megacity’s coming breath.
