Chapter 38 Part 2

Chapter 38 Part 2
Alden

Layla raises her hands, her voice a guttural cry as she unleashes the combined essence. The journal shudders, its pages tearing apart as the dark magic is purged. The room erupts in a blinding flash of light, the force of it knocking us all to the ground. The air is filled with the scent of ozone, the sound of cracking energy echoing in my ears.

When the light fades, the journal is gone, reduced to ashes. The pedestal stands empty, the darkness that once clung to it dissipating into nothingness. Layla lies on the floor, her body limp, her breathing shallow. The brothers are equally drained, their faces pale, their muscles trembling.

I rush to Layla’s side, cradling her head in my lap. Her skin is clammy, her hair damp with sweat. “Layla? Can you hear me?” My voice is thick with worry, my hands shaking as I brush her hair back from her face.

Her eyes flutter open, her gaze unfocused. “It’s done,” she whispers, her voice weak. “But… It’s not over.”

Adrik staggers to his feet, his expression grim. “What do you mean?” His voice is tight, his eyes scanning the room as if expecting the Syndicate to appear at any moment.

Layla’s hand clutches mine, her grip feeble. “The Syndicate… they’ll know. They’ll come for us.”

Akon’s voice is tight with anger. “Then we’ll be ready for them.” He flexes his hands, his fire magic flickering across his skin like a warning.

Ashton and Ayden exchange a glance, their usual banter absent. The gravity of the situation hangs over us like a storm cloud, the air heavy with unspoken fears.

I helped Layla to her feet, her weight leaning heavily on me. Her body is still trembling, her legs unsteady as she tries to stand. “We need to rest. Regain our strength.”

Adrik nods, his expression softening as he looks at Layla. “We’ll take shifts. Make sure no one gets in.”

The brothers led us to a secluded chamber, the room sparse but comfortable. The bed is large, the sheets soft and inviting. Layla collapses onto it, her body still trembling from the exertion. I sit beside her, my hand brushing her hair back from her face. Her skin is pale, her lips parted as she struggles to catch her breath.

“You did it,” I whisper, my voice thick with emotion. “You were incredible.”

Her lips curve into a faint smile, but her eyes remain heavy with fatigue. “We did it. Together.”

As I watch her drift into an exhausted sleep, I can’t shake the feeling that this is only the beginning. The Syndicate’s retaliation is inevitable, and the fragile trust we’ve built with the Eragon Brothers will be tested further. But for now, in this fleeting moment of peace, I allow myself to hope.

The mansion feels quieter, the air less heavy with malice. But the silence is deceptive, a lull before the storm. As I sit beside Layla, her breathing steady, I wonder what the future holds. Have we truly weakened the Syndicate, or have we only awakened a greater threat?

As the hours pass, the mansion settles into an uneasy calm. Layla sleeps deeply, her body still recovering from the ritual. I sit by her side, my mind racing with thoughts of what’s to come. The brothers have taken their shifts guarding the chamber, their presence a silent reminder of the tenuous alliance we’ve formed.

Adrik is the first to return, his footsteps quiet as he enters the room. He leans against the wall, his arms crossed, his gaze fixed on Layla. There’s a softness in his eyes now, a vulnerability he tries to hide. “She’s strong,” he says, his voice low. “Stronger than any of us.”

I nod, my throat tight. “She had to be. We all did.”

He pushes away from the wall, his expression hardening. “Don’t think this changes anything. We’re still not on the same side.”

“Maybe not,” I reply, meeting his gaze. “But we’re in the same fight.”

Adrik snorts, turning to leave. “For now.” He is coming around. He is stubborn, just like Layla.

Akon takes the next shift, his presence a fiery contrast to Adrik’s brooding intensity. He paces the room, his hands clasped behind his back, his red hair catching the light as he moves. “You think they’ll come tonight?” he asks, his voice tight.

“I don’t know,” I admit. “But we need to be ready.”

He stops pacing, his eyes narrowing. “Do you trust my brothers?”

I hesitate, weighing my words carefully. “As much as they trust us. Which isn’t much.”

Akon laughs, a bitter sound. “Fair enough. But if they betray us, I’ll burn them to ash myself.”

“Your brothers?” I ask.

“Yes, I love them. But…I love Layla too.” He looks at her sleeping and then at me. “But don’t you dare tell her that. I want to be the one to do it.”

It is my turn to laugh. “Fair enough.”

Ashton and Ayden arrive together, their usual bickering replaced by a tense silence. They stand by the window, their gazes fixed on the darkness outside. “It’s too quiet,” Ashton mutters, his hands clenching into fists.

“Yeah,” Ayden agrees, his voice grim. “Too fucking quiet.”

I join them, my eyes scanning the horizon. The night is still, the moon casting an eerie glow over the landscape. “They’re out there,” I say, more to myself than to them. “Waiting.”

Ashton turns to me, his blue eyes cold. “Then let them come. We’ll be ready.”

The hours crawl by, each one heavier than the last. Layla stirs occasionally, her sleep restless, her body still fighting to recover. I stay by her side, my hand in hers, my presence offering a silent reassurance.

When she finally wakes, the room is bathed in the pale light of dawn. Her eyes flutter open, her gaze unfocused at first before landing on me. “Alden,” she whispers, her voice hoarse.

“I’m here,” I reply, squeezing her hand. “You’re safe.”

She tries to sit up, wincing as her body protests. “How long have I been out?”
