The Pursuit of Truth

"Listen, Jason, I want to talk to Juan," Kate said to him in a low, steady voice, making sure her tone conveyed both urgency and determination.

They were sitting across from each other in his office, discussing several aspects of the case. Kate felt an increasing need to talk directly to Juan. Something about the evidence—or lack thereof—didn’t sit right with her, and she knew she had to ask him a few key questions if she was going to make any headway in this investigation.

Jason leaned back in his chair, his expression clearly hesitant. "You know that's not possible," he said, his voice firm but tinged with concern. "Juan's in police custody, and no one is allowed to meet him except his lawyer."

Kate let out a frustrated sigh but refused to back down. "I've done you many favors in the past," she said, meeting Jason's eyes. "Now it’s time for you to return the favor. I need to speak with him. There's something important I need to know."

Jason’s brows furrowed, clearly torn. “But Kate…” he began, trying to resist, but she cut him off, not giving him a chance to finish his thought.

“No ifs and buts,” she said, her tone unwavering. “I know it’s a tough ask, but it’s not impossible. You can make it happen.”

Jason’s eyes searched hers, and for a moment, it was as if he was weighing the consequences. It wasn’t a decision he could make lightly. If word got out that Kate was meeting with Juan before he went to trial, there would be consequences. Jason wasn’t naive—he understood the risks. But at the same time, he also understood that it was because of Kate’s relentless pursuit of this case that they were at this point.

With a long exhale, he gave in, albeit reluctantly. "Alright," he said, finally relenting. "If you really want to meet Juan, I can make it happen. But you'll need to wait until the staff clears out. After that, I can arrange the meeting. Just be patient."

A smile stretched across Kate’s face, a rare moment of satisfaction. "Thank you," she said, her voice soft with gratitude.

"But, Kate," Jason continued, his brow furrowing, "Tell me something—what exactly do you want to ask him? I mean, we've got ample evidence, right? Everything's pointing to Juan Luu as Sasha Paula’s killer."

Kate’s expression grew serious, and she looked him in the eye. "You don’t have any concrete proof that Juan killed Sasha," she said firmly. "And there’s certainly no proof that he abducted her either."

Jason remained silent for a moment, considering her words, before she spoke again, a calm but persistent conviction in her voice. "The CCTV footage shows Juan entering Sasha’s room two days before she disappeared, and then leaving empty-handed. That’s not evidence of murder. That’s just a man coming and going. And then we have a few comments where Juan forbade Sasha from condemning Satanism, but that’s it."

Jason’s face twisted into an expression of uncertainty. “So, you think we have nothing substantial?”

Kate shook her head, her gaze unwavering. "Exactly. We have nothing solid. We need to stay sharp and explore every avenue. If we’re going to catch the real killer, we can’t just settle on what we think we know."

Jason let out a long breath, clearly frustrated but also intrigued. "Okay, so what exactly are you suggesting? Are you saying that Juan might not be the killer at all?"

Kate nodded slowly, her thoughts clear and deliberate. "Yes, I think it's possible that Juan isn't the murderer we’re looking for. His chaotic personality doesn’t match the profile of someone who's been meticulously planning and executing these crimes. And my team reviewed the CCTV footage from his neighborhood—they confirmed that Juan hasn’t left his house in days. His parents’ statements about his withdrawal from social life were true. How does a man like that, who never leaves his home, abduct people and commit murders?"

Jason, ever the skeptic, shook his head. "Kate, criminals like Juan are clever. It’s not hard to avoid being caught on CCTV. Every camera has blind spots, and he knows how to exploit those gaps to his advantage. You're saying that he's been in his house this whole time, but that doesn't mean he's not involved. There are always ways around technology. And you've seen how he reacts when confronted about his past actions—he's been avoiding any real answers. Maybe there's more to him than meets the eye."

Kate met his gaze, her expression resolute. "Maybe. But I’m telling you, I don’t think he fits the mold of a killer. If he’s been hiding in his house all this time, how is he supposed to be out there abducting and murdering people? Something doesn’t add up."

Jason’s voice grew more heated as he responded, “But Kate, think about it—Juan had a reason to go to Sasha’s house. He had an agenda. And why did he get upset when she posted against Satanism? His connection to all of this is too strong to ignore. Maybe his silence is part of the act. He’s not talking because he doesn’t want to reveal anything that could implicate him.”

Kate stood her ground. "Instead of speculating, let’s go directly to the source. Let’s ask Juan and see what he has to say for himself. That’s the only way we’ll know the truth."

Jason’s eyes narrowed. "You do realize Juan hasn’t spoken since we arrested him, right? We’ve tried everything to get him to talk. He’s acting like he’s mute."

Kate leaned forward, her tone calm but firm. "I know how to make him speak."

Jason gave her a puzzled look but said nothing more. He could see the confidence in her expression. After a brief moment of hesitation, he stood up from his desk and motioned for her to follow him.

“Alright, Kate,” Jason said, with a reluctant sigh. “I’ll arrange it. But you better be sure about this. If you think there’s more to this case, now’s your chance to get the truth from him.”

“Thank you,” Kate said as she followed Jason down the hallway.

They arrived at the interrogation room, where Juan was sitting quietly in a metal chair, his expression unreadable. Jason gestured toward the room. "Go ahead, Kate. If you think the real killer is still out there, it’s time to find out what he knows."

Kate stopped for a moment, glancing back at Jason. "Aren’t you coming with me?"
