Chapter 54 Signing the Relationship Contract

Chapter 54 Signing the Relationship Contract
Veronica's POV:

I pulled out the chair and sat down, smoothing the papers in front of me with trembling fingers. The header read: "Tri-Party Arrangement Agreement" in Theo's precise, professional font.

Of course he'd given it an official title.

I started reading, my eyes scanning the numbered sections:

Rule 1: Group Dynamics.... When all three parties are present together, interactions shall remain platonic and friendly in nature. Romantic or physical gestures of affection are to occur only during one-on-one time between Veronica and the respective party of her choosing.

Romantic courtship may only occur during one-on-one interactions between Veronica Whitmore and either Theodore Ashford OR Maximilain Ashford individually.

All parties agree to a binding Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding the nature of this arrangement. No details shall be shared with outside parties, including but not limited to: family members, friends, colleagues, or media entities.

Max leaned over my shoulder, reading along. "Seriously?" He grinned, tapping the paper. "You used the word 'courting' in this thing?"

Theo groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"'Courting,'" Max repeated, laughing. "What are we, living in a Jane Austen novel? Should I bring you flowers and ask permission to hold your hand?"

Theo groaned, shooting his brother a look withnhis green eyes that could have frozen lava. "It is the formal way of addressing this, bro... which you would never know anything about."

"Formal?" Max scoffed, dropping onto the couch beside me with that effortless grace he always had. "Theo, you can't just—"

"I absolutely can," Theo interrupted. "This is a serious matter that requires clear boundaries and expectations."

I tuned out from their bickering for a moment, my eyes catching on the NDA clause that was on the paper... again.

It seemed extreme at first glance—undercover in public places, complete secrecy—but as I sat there, the weight of it settled over me with uncomfortable familiarity.

The media had already started circulating rumors.

I'd seen the headlines just yesterday when I'd made the mistake of checking my phone: "Billionaire Brothers' beautiful Beach Houseguest," "Love Triangle Brewing in Tech Dynasty?"

They were already brewing rumors of us... if we gave them anything concrete—it would explode into something unmanageable.

The thought made me sick.

I'd already experienced a taste of unwanted attention just days ago with media... and it had been suffocating.

This contract, as bizarre as it was, actually made sense. It was protection. For all of us.

My gaze drifted to the final rule again, the one that gave me complete control.

No pressure. No timeline. My choice, whenever I was ready.

"This is more than I could ask for," I said softly, looking up at Theo. "Thank you."

His expression softened immediately. "Of course. I wanted to make sure you felt safe and—"

"Oh, come on!" Max groaned, throwing his hands up in exasperation. "This won't even be necessary! You can't actually list out rules for things... especially when it comes to relationships and emotions. My dear brother, this is not your app license agreement..."

"Max—" Theo started, but Max was on a roll now.

"What's next? Scheduled dates on who gets Veronica in weekends? Color-coded calendars for who gets which days?" He shook his head, though his smile was affectionate despite the mockery. "You can't regulate feelings, Theo. That's not how any of this works."

Theo sighed. "I knew you would say this... but understand, it is for Veronica's wellbeing. She deserves clarity and protection, not chaos."

So considerate. Always thinking three steps ahead, trying to create order in situations that defied it.

I looked between them... Theo with his humbleness... and Max with his spontaneous energy and dismissal of anything that felt too confining.

Both of them so different, yet both here, both willing to try this insane arrangement for me.

"Actually," I heard myself say, "I think the contract is a good idea."

Max's eyebrows shot up. Theo looked vindicated.

"But," I continued, fighting back a smile, "Max has a point too. We can have the structure, the protection, the boundaries... but we also have to remember that feelings don't follow bullet points."

I picked up the pen Theo had placed beside the document, looking down at me... of what I was about to do.

"So I'm signing this," I said firmly. "But with the understanding that we're all going to be flexible when real life gets messy. Because it will."

Theo nodded slowly, a small smile playing at his lips. Max leaned back, looking pleased with himself.

I signed my name in careful script, then slid the document toward them. "Your turn, gentlemen."

Once we all signed, I looked at Theo and Max and said, "I really love hanging out with you two guys, as friends... when the three of us are together, you know... you both really make me laugh. I've never had this much fun since, you know, kindergarten."

Theo smiled warmly.

Max snorted. "Girl... you grew up in tyranny. You don't know what real fun is."

I chuckled, the sound bubbling up from somewhere deep and genuine.

I placed my hand flat on the desk between us, suddenly feeling the heaviness of what we were really doing here.

"Leave the contract aside... so let us make a promise here. That no matter what happens... the three of us will be friends for life."

Theo nodded immediately... with understanding.

Max, surprisingly, didn't crack a joke or make a sarcastic comment. Instead, he placed his palm over my hand... his touch warm and solid. Theo followed, his hand settling on top of Max's, completing our little pact.

The moment felt sacred somehow, more binding than any legal document.

I pulled my hand back gently and reached into my bag, retrieving three rose quartz bracelets I'd picked up yesterday.

The pale pink stones caught the light as I handed one to each of them. "Here... take these. We should all keep wearing them. I read somewhere that rose quartz makes us more receptive to love."

Theo examined his bracelet with genuine interest, turning it over in his long fingers. "That's a wonderful choice, Veronica. Rose quartz is associated with compassion and emotional healing too."

But Max looked at me, then at Theo, his eyebrows raised in amused disbelief. "When did you even join his boring gang of spirituality? Come on, Veronica, you're better than this."

I only chuckled, slipping my own bracelet onto my wrist and feeling like I was floating.

Like heaven had somehow descended into this ridiculous, beautiful, chaotic moment with these two impossible men who'd just signed a contract to compete for my heart while promising to stay friends forever.
