Chapter 24 The Council Decision

Chapter 24 The Council Decision
Thoran's pov:
(Emerald Pack stronghold, council chamber)

The chamber smelled of smoke and burning pine. Shadows from the torches danced on the walls, but they could not hide the tension pressing down on everyone present. I took my seat at the head of the obsidian table, my heart heavy. Korran, my grandfather and the eldest of the council, sat directly across from me, his piercing eyes scanning the room as if he could see through every lie, every secret, every thought. To his left, Elder Ron, the youngest of the council, fidgeted nervously, while Elder Sara’s gaze cut through the space like a blade, sharp and unyielding.
“This… cannot continue,” Korran said finally, his voice gravelly, the weight of age and authority behind every word. “We have tolerated too much. The girl has already destroyed our plans once… and now—” His words faltered, the implication unspoken but deadly clear.
I nodded. I had dreaded this moment. “She has killed again,” I said softly, feeling the words scrape my throat raw. “The human, Tara. She was the fiancé of Dr. Neel, the human doctor she has been staying with in the city. Tasha—” I paused, swallowed hard, “she killed her.”

Elder Sara slammed her fist on the table, rattling the ancient wood. “She is no longer just dangerous. She is a weapon of pure destruction. How are we to hide her from the others? From humans? From everyone?”
Ron’s hands shook slightly as he spoke. “The humans… the scientists, the police… they are not stupid. If the fiancée of a doctor dies under mysterious circumstances, they will investigate. They will trace it back. And if they discover what Tasha is, if they see even a shadow of her power… we will lose everything.”

I felt a cold tightness in my chest. Ron was right. Our careful coexistence with the human world, our centuries of secrecy….it all teetered on the edge of collapse. Tasha moving through the city streets, leaving a trail of chaos, had created ripples that threatened to drown us.

“She was just a human,” Elder Sara said, her voice low, almost a growl. “A girl with no knowledge, no clue… and now she is dead because of Tasha’s whims. This is reckless. This is dangerous.”

“She is my daughter,” I said, my voice trembling despite my attempts to stay composed. “I am aware of the danger. But she is still my child. She has been through unimaginable pain….she was taken from life itself and returned. We cannot approach this as if she is only a threat. We must consider her as a person… as a family.”
Korran’s eyes softened slightly, but the weight of his scrutiny remained. “We are not denying her humanity, Thoran. But the rest of the world does not care about that. The other packs, humans, and Neel… they see only the consequences. A girl with immeasurable power who kills without restraint.”
I clenched my fists. “We must contain her. Protect her. Before someone else does.” My voice echoed in the chamber, firm but heavy with fear. “Containment is not punishment. It is survival. For her, for us, for the pack.”
Ron leaned forward, still tense. “And Neel? The human she lived with? He may go to the authorities. He may tell someone. We cannot control what a human does in grief and shock. And if word spreads to labs, they will act. They will experiment. They will hunt her. They will expose us all.”
“Yes,” I admitted. “That is why we cannot wait. We act as a family. We approach her carefully. She must understand that we are not her enemies, even if the world outside is.”
Sara’s sharp eyes narrowed. “You think she will listen? She is no longer a child, Thoran. She has lived death, magic, and vengeance. Her wolf… her demon… they are stronger than any of us. She will resist. And if she senses fear—” Her voice cut off, the unspoken warning hanging heavy in the air.

I swallowed, trying to steady the lump in my throat. “I know. But she is still Tasha. She trusts us… sometimes. That is the leverage we have. That is why I will go to her. I will speak to her. I will try to reach her before anyone else does.”

Korran nodded slowly. “You speak wisely, but we must all be ready. Containment will not be easy. She has already killed once, and now a human. The other packs will see this as an opportunity. Snowpack and Stoneclaw will not hesitate if they sense her. And humans… if they discover the death of the doctor’s fiancée, they will not forgive. We cannot afford mistakes.”

Ron shuddered. “This is what I feared. All this time Snowpack controlled Noah, the prophecy seer, tampered with his visions to stand above us and other packs. And now? He is missing. Without him, they no longer have the leverage over other packs.

They will do anything to hold their power among us and others, and also, they will create any type of havoc to find him…who knows they hold us accountable because there is a doubt that Noah resurrected Tasha, what if they plan something..and now Tasha… she moves like a storm in the city, unpredictable, untamed.”

“She will not remain untamed,” I said, trying to sound more certain than I felt. “We will bring her in. She may resist, but we will do what we must to ensure her safety and the pack’s. Containment, guidance… and protection.”
Sara’s voice was low but dangerous. “Containment or not, we cannot allow another human to die. Or any wolf. She must be restrained, and we must prepare for retaliation from both the humans and other packs. We must act decisively.”

The council sat in tense silence. I could almost hear Tasha’s heartbeat beyond the chamber walls. I could feel her power pulsing in the city, and the black tendrils of her magic gnawed at my chest. She was alive. She was dangerous. She was my child. And soon, we would have to confront her….or risk losing everything we had fought for.

Korran finally spoke, voice deliberate and heavy. “We agree on the course of action. Containment. But approach her with caution. She is no longer just a child. She is a force. And we will not make the mistake of underestimating her again. The humans… they may not know yet. But if they do… if the laboratories or the authorities learn what she is capable of…” His voice trailed off, leaving the threat unspoken but unmistakable.

Sara leaned back, arms crossed, eyes blazing. “We act now. We cannot afford delay. She must not reach Neel. And we must ensure her containment before any other pack attempts to seize her.”
I nodded. “I will speak to her. I will do what I must as her father. But we all must be ready for anything.”
The chamber settled into uneasy silence, the gravity of our task weighing heavily on every soul present. The fire crackled, the shadows danced, and outside, the city and its humans moved unaware of the storm approaching.

I looked at the council, at my grandfather, at the fierce Sara and anxious Ron. “This is not just about her anymore,” I said softly. “It is about the survival of our pack. And about ensuring she does not die again….by the hands of anyone.”
Korran’s eyes locked
on mine. “Then we act. And we act now.”
