Chapter 33 — The beginning (epilogue)

Zoe:

“I hate lying to Lana,” I mutter in Azazel’s ear as we make our way up to our apartment after an entertaining night out with our friends. Azazel and I threw a party at Garden of Eden commemorating our new living arrangements and my mating mark.

It’s been weeks since we defeated Marael and Sahara and escaped hell. Once everything was settled, I moved into Azazel’s flat. Azazel also gave Bree and Lana an apartment a few floors down from ours—rent free. As soon as I was reassured that my mom and everyone else was fine, we spoke to Mathias.

Mathias was a little peeved that we gave the amulet away but relieved to know that Marael and Sahara were dead. It was as if a great weight was lifted from his shoulders. Mikhail, Amara, and the others were just as relieved. It seems that Marael was a thorn in all their sides.

The look of shock on my mom’s face when she met Azazel was priceless. She hit it off with him right away. Another thing that changed was how my mom was acting. She seemed happier and free. To my shock, she quit her job at John’s house and decided to move to San Jose with Augusto. She was very happy that I was doing well in school and that I found Azazel. We decided not to tell her what we were. No point in freaking my mom out by telling her that I’m a Siren and that Azazel is a demon. We had dinner with her and Augusto the other night. It was fun. We’re planning on helping her and Augusto with their move next month.

I hit it off with the rest of Azazel’s friends too. Surprisingly enough, Nevaeh and I have become close. It helps that she’s obviously in love with Mikhail, and the guy is just as enamored by her. She has helped me research Sirens and even encouraged me to perform. Azazel has been very supportive by offering to have me sing at the club. I told him to give me time. I’m still trying to get my bearings as a Siren.

As for my friends, Bree seemed quieter than usual when she got back. She doesn’t mention men or sex anymore. It’s as if she has given up on love. The only time she seems animated is when Fallon is around. Sometimes I wonder if there’s something there. They both look at each other with so much longing that it’s almost painful to watch. I don’t ask, though. It’s Bree’s business, and I can wait until she’s ready to share what’s going on in her head. She seems a bit more dedicated to learning about the Erue and her role in its existence. We introduced her to Creighton and Amara, and she’s been researching with them.

Lana has taken a completely different approach. Unlike Bree, Lana is partying and dating, which worries me a little. I mean, wouldn’t you be concerned if the devil’s mate was dating other men? Who knows how Lucifer will take this information. But then again, he was the one who rejected her; perhaps, he wouldn’t care. I highly doubt it, though. I get the feeling something is going to happen soon. I just hope that it’s for the better.

Right now, my main concern is this secret I’m withholding from Lana. The girl is walking around in denial of who she is and is completely oblivious of her mated status.

“I know you want to tell her, luv, and I understand your situation, but you have to understand that telling her might make things worse. Lucifer gave up his claim to her, and her angel agreed. It would only hurt her to know the truth.” I swallow hard as I consider his words. Perhaps it’s better to leave things as they are.

Azazel’s apartment is a bit different now that I live with him. I kept a third of my coffee cups with their cheesy quips, and there are a lot more girly things lying around. Azazel loves it. We spend most of our time together talking, going on dates, or just hanging out at home. I love every little thing I learn about him, including his hot accent and amusing British slang words. And from his enthusiastic retorts, I can tell that he feels the same way. If anything, he seems to take a lot of joy in learning things about me that, to some, would be inconsequential. He says it’s a mate thing.

“Have I told you lately how much I love you?” He whispers in my ear as he ushers me to our bedroom. Resting my back against his solid chest, I gaze back at him and smile. “Not as much as I love you.” His smile is deep and guttural as he leans down and rests a kiss on my temple. “That’s not possible, luv.”

Who knew that a shattered girl with little hope would find her happy ending. Can life get any better?
